Hi all!

I am running Win10 1709.

I downloaded the latest master development version of NVDA:

Master 14785

I have the latest development version of Win10 apps assentials:

When I press the Windows key, NVDA will not bring up results when I search, and NVDA will not do anything, in the start area,  when I try to tab to the mike, to the all apps, or any of that. I have to do object navigation in there, and that does not work well.

I just thought all of you would like to know, and if any of you have noticed this behavior in the start area with these latest development versions.

Take care, all!

Re: NVDA tech Support

Quentin Christensen

I try to keep up with the list at least every couple of days.  I have been on leave for the past month so am only just starting to catch up, but that is the exception rather than the rule.

I certainly try to pick up on messages which have not been replied to.  If I see a thread with 50 messages and I'm busy and the last time I looked at the thread it had wandered off course into an unrelated discussion, I might not go back to it - which is why if you have a new question, it's best to start a new thread unless it really is related to the conversation and not hijacking someone else's question.

We do have, as was mentioned, paid telephone support, with both an Australian and a US number, and certainly, one thing I have in my mind to look at this year, is how useful that is, why people do or don't take it up, and how we can improve our support into the future.

I do encourage people to write to the list rather than me personally with support queries, but that is because while I will still see it on here and answer it, others may see it and respond earlier.

Regards

Quentin.

For example I seem to be one of just two people who find updates to nvda do often lock up on the reboot. Its going to be impossible for anyone working on the code to fix it if they cannot see it going on.

Hmmm how would one go about doing this.

Firstly you would need some way to handle this.

I guess if it was all done via skype it could be done but I certainly do not have time to sit round on a  waiting for calls on nvda.

For mail ie email we have this list for global support and the tech lists at least in new zealand do handle nvda questions and issues if they get posted there.

There is the blind organisation I am in and they have an accessibility centre of sorts that covers all support I suspose nvda to but who knows.

Its an organisation so like all of them they want you to use jaws but who knows a lot of that has changed a lot.

I think there is a toll call service in australia that the devs run
which you can buy, all reader groups have a trained tech support call
centre, we have mike and maybe other devs doing support but its not a
full support group.

Being that this is opensource and not payed for like jaws I am not
sure how we can fix this shortfall.

Technically I guess we can have groups on skype and or whats app for
nvda support but you really need someone to pick up that phone and
dial support.

Here is the thing, a number of  devs and a few are payed but most of
us are not.

Having used jaws, and dolphin products while I have needed support
for most of my comercial product use its never been that much and
email has been most of it but if I need a responce the phone is
always the best especially if the computer does not work right.

brainstorm and contact tech support when needed but NVDA does not
make it easy for our students to do this. Our students are the
future of NVDA as future screen readers. Thoughts?

Re: Factory Reset

John Isige

You can launch narrator, but you might need a USB audio device. It goes
to mine, though I have multiple audio devices, so maybe if I pulled it,
the internal sound card would work instead. Use Narrator to set up, then
when you're booted, launch your portable copy of NVDA and then tell it
to install and check the box about using portable settings on your
installed copy. Be sure to tell it to keep all the addons and such when
you generate your portable copy. I had to reset twice within a week
because of a dumb Windows update thing, and that's what I did. Hope that
helps.

Re: Nvda sleep. Mode

Quentin Christensen

The other thing I was going to add to the thread through, was the difference between sleep mode and speech mode.

Sleep mode is toggled with either NVDA+shift+s or NVDA+shift+z as discussed already.  It stops anything from being passed to NVDA while in the current application.  If you alt+tab to something else, it will automatically start reading it (unless the other application is another window from this application).  It stays like that until you either press the keystroke again, or exit the application.

Speech mode doesn't change what happens, but rather whether you hear it or not.  If you turn speech mode to "off" and then press NVDA+f12, it will still report the time, it's just that you won't hear it - it will be in the speech viewer if you have that running, and it will display it on a connected Braille display.

If you are in speech mode: off, it's like you turned your speakers off but NVDA is still working and responding to input and commands.  If you are in sleep mode, it's like NVDA isn't running at all.

Could it be something with needing the Fn key maybe for your NVDA modifier key perhaps, in which case it could potentially be the four key limitation.

Otherwise, the other thing that crops up from time to time is that Windows thinks you have a modifier key held down even when you don't.  In that case it usually manifests it in other ways (as if every single key you press also had CONTROL held down for instance) and the usual fix I use is to mash the modifier keys a few times to "unstick" it.

After that, I'm running out of ideas.

Re: Nvda sleep mode

Quentin Christensen

Hi there,

Are you asking what NVDA sleep mode is and / or how to use it?

To turn sleep mode on press NVDA+shift+s, or if you have NVDA in laptop keyboard layout, press NVDA+shift+z.

From that point, NVDA will completely ignore everything in that program until you close it. It will behave as if NVDA wasn't running at all.  When you alt+tab to another program, NVDA will read the ALT+TAB window and the other program normally (unless the other program is another instance of the "sleeping" program.  You can press the keystroke again (NVDA+shift+s / NVDA+shift+z) to turn sleep mode off.

Sleep mode is particularly useful in self-voicing programs.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: use ocr addon on win 7

Quentin Christensen

Using the OCR addon, you need to use the review cursor to read the recognised text.  I gave a quick tutorial in our In-Process newsletter last year: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/in-process-5th-october-2017/

Here are the steps from that article (note that the first one assumes you are doing it while reading the article, and I had included a test image with text in it after these steps):

Using the OCR Add-on

1. Press g to move to the next graphic. NVDA identifies it as “Test image for OCR graphic”.
2. Press NVDA+r. NVDA reports “Recognising”. After a pause, NVDA reports “Done”.
3. Although visually, the screen hasn’t changed, NVDA has placed the text recognised in the image in a “virtual document”. You can navigate around this using the review cursor. Press numpad plus (laptop: NVDA+shift+a) to read the whole document from the current point.
4. Press shift+numpad 7 (laptop: NVDA+control+home) to move to the top of the virtual document.
5. Press numpad 9 (laptop: NVDA+down arrow) to move through and read the text line by line.

Re: Google Chrome Question

Quentin Christensen

Hi Dan,

Have you got an example page this happens in? It seems to be working fine for me with NVDA 2017.4 and Chome latest version (Version 63.0.3239.132 (Official Build) (64-bit))

I had a look on several sites including Wikipedia and eBay and on each I could type in an edit box then press NVDA+up arrow (if you're using laptop keyboard layout it would be NVDA+L) to read the current line and it did, and it read the character I removed with backspace.

The other thing to try is restarting Chrome / NVDA / the computer just to be sure it's not some random gremlin that goes away once you restart (if it keeps coming back that's a problem of course).

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hello all.

I’m using google chrome with the latest version of NVDA.  When I’m in an edit box, I’m unable to check what I’ve written.  Also, when I backspace to correct something, the letter is not announced.  Is there a way to correct these problems?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks everyone!  I hope you all had a good few weeks while I was away :)

Yes, down here in the southern hemisphere it's our summer, so we tend to have our larger break now - our school year does the same thing.  I always knew that Christmas was a winter affair in Europe and the US, but I was fascinated when I first learnt that the US (and possibly Europe?) school year starts in August / September and ends in June rather than following the calendar year.

Hi everyone,

Officially, I'm on leave now until the 15th of January.  While I'll still pop in now and then, I won't be as active for the next few weeks.  I know you will all be as helpful as ever in my absence, and also if there is anything particularly important or which needs my attention when I get back, do feel free to email or CC me so I see it.

I know Mick is also taking a similar amount of leave and I'm not sure how much Reef is taking.  In any case, things will likely be quiet all round officially from us.

Do have a wonderful, happy, holy and safe Christmas and New Year and I look forward to many stimulating conversations with you all in 2018!

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: Microsoft Word 2016 spell checker and NVDA reading.

Quentin Christensen

Hi Daniele,

Sorry for the delay.  I wanted to ask whether this issue is still occurring?  Using Windows 10 Insider build 17074 and the current stable version of Office 2016 with NVDA 2017.4, I can't reproduce the issue, but there are quite a few variables.

Since you didn't get any other replies, I wonder if there are contributing factors specific to your computer rather than a more common issue.  One thing I wondered was whether you had installed any software recently?  Particularly software which might add things into Word.  For instance, there are a few third party spelling / grammar programs available which do this and which potentially might affect the behaviour of Word's spell check.

Now I have noticed that spell check has changed slightly recently, although from what I've found it seems to work a bit better now rather than the reverse, at least for me.

regards

Quentin.

Hi! I'm Daniele from Italy.
Since few weeks ago, when I pressed F7 on my Word 2016, this is what happened:
- The wrong word is highlighted.
- NVDA reads the wrong word and also reads it letter by letter

Then I simply press TAB to choose what to do: to ignore, to add to the dictionary or press ESC and correct by hand. This is the case of orthographic error.
In case of a grammar error, once pressed F7, something similar happened:
- The whole sentence is highlighted.
- NVDA reads the wrong word
- Again reads it also letter by letter
- Also reads all the sentence which contains the wrong word.
- Then I simply press TAB to choose what to do.

The workflow I've described above, doesn't happen any more. I don't know why.
Now, once pressed F7, NVDA doesn't read automatically all the useful informations it reads before.

Now once pressed F7 this is what happens:
- the wrong word is highlighted.
- NVDA reades "Ignore this time", which is the first selected option on the SpellChecker window.

That's all.

Also the SpellChecker window interface is a little bit different than before. Not to much but a little bit.
Can you help me to understand if I've accidently changed some options? Or maybe some updates?

The previous way was really comfortable.
Thank you very much.

Daniele.

Hi,

Using NVDA with MS Office 2007 or 2016.

When using NVDA 2017.4 to include to put data in the footer in Ms Office 2016 you cannot tab to the object for checking the automatic date field or the field name object. The only way I can see is to use the separate tabs on ribbons in the Insert tab and then going to Quick Parts.

Is there any way of showing the tabs in the footer to go to date/file name?.
