1. It's not USB. Roger said that what he's referring to as his "portable"
version is in fact on an internal hard disk. I know that may seem an odd use
of the word "portable", but at least it means we can rule out any problems to
do with externally connected devices.

2. The drive is (presumably) not the same one as contains Roger's "standard"
version of NVDA, because the "portable" copy is on a traditional spinning-rust
HDD, whereas his system drive is on an SSD, which is where I assume his
standard version of NVDA is installed. Therefore your suggestion to check how
full each drive is is well worth while, although I would still expect the
system only to have a single swap partition / file, so if it runs out of memory
running either version of NVDA, swapping will occur in exactly the same way
for each.

3. The drive containing the "portable" copy is an HDD, whereas the main system
drive is an SSD, so drive degradation of the portable copy is a possible
cause, agreed.

will still be a 3. Not true because the slowest wins. If you plug a USB 3
into a USB 2 port, it becomes a USB 2 drive. Vice versa is also true. A 2
drive into a 3 port runs at USB 2 speed. To get full USB 3, both the drive
and the port must be USB 3.

2) Fill status of the drive. If the drive is close to being full, it
may be having to swap data a lot. That can really slow down any
application. You wouldn't notice it on your regular applications because
they would run off the regular drive. However, you would notice it on
anything else that ran from the portable drive. I recommend less that 85%
full, but others here are more tech savy than myself.

3) Drive death immenent. I don't know what it is like to have a solid
state drive die. But, on a traditional spinning drive, the drive will mark
sectors as bad when the drive has trouble accessing them. This can result
in corruptions. And, as the drive has to work twice as hard to find all
the pieces it keeps moving, this can cause slower run time. Thus, you get
slower and slower and more frequent data corruptions in an application. I
don't remember how, but you can test for this.

Re: Portable version degrading

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

One of the issues is that often ssd removable media like memory cards and sticks often get removed before a cache is written, so if this causes corruption the original software will still work but the messing about of the operating system attempting to avoid the less good bits can slow it down.Certainly one other thing to bear in mind is if you are using an external hub, and its plugged into a usb 3 port it does not follow that the ports on the hub will work that fast.

I've also noticed that not all usb 3 sticks are equal in their speeds eeither, some seem to take an age to initialise but work fine thereafter others seem to glitch.
You can do a drive check from windows though and can often fix any corruption but be aware it can make the software unreadable. My suggestion is to run a portable coy for a while on the same drive as an installed on, if it still continues at the same speed over time then you can almost certainly blame the stick or usb port for the slow down.

So not clear what the difference is between the two, but to me it sounds like the dll had become unregistered and now its registered again.
I used to get this issue a lot with dlls belonging to the mp3 decoder used by Goldwave when Winamac was on the system. in the end I had to copy another copy to the right place then register that with the system and it has never complained since. My feeling is that its easy to get multiple entries in the registry or delete ones that have path details needed by a different piece of soft3ware. Brian

Yeah, you need to tab twice to a checkbox and uncheck it and just make sure to do it the first time round else you will have to exit and relaunch the installer.

ccleaner is part of avast now so we are stuck with it now.

You just have to be awake, the first tab will mention something about security, tab again and there is the checkbox, overshoot and the installer will look like normal and you have to exit and come back in.

I usually update first thing in the morning but if you are half a sleep you will probably miss it.

Sadly a friend used a lot of free cleaners, cleanmaster, puron, ccleaner, and his admin decided that all the free software he loaded including ccleaner was malware filled.

And told him to use norton which his work uses.

Trouble is the interface is rather to complex.

For whatever reason some of my friends used norton at home and still use it.

Especially with the cpu slowdowns and patches, norton is just not something I'd use.

Firstly the latest version of Ccleaner is becoming a pest. it seems to be able to unilaterally decide to install avast anti virus without telling anyone until its too late. Unchecky did not spot it and yesterday, I twice had to take a machine back a day to get rid of it as I'm sure you are all aware how unfriendly the uninstaller is to screenreaders. Its left bits all over the machine, including in some folders labelled Cisco for some reason.
I fell that I need to warn folk about this unacceptable behaviour of ccleaner. It claims, apparently to be easy to remove but not for us.

Secondly the laugh.
Microsoft Security Essentials is something we use in Windows 7, but a person I know was having issues with it crashing, so he sent me a dictated email about it via his Iphone. This wonderful software has renamed this Microsoft program as
Microsoft Security Squirrels.

OK fine, so I had this wonderful picture of the innards of my machine with all These squirrels inside burying viruses all over the place.

Hi Alexandre ,

It was not that as clear to recognize some of the pictures but, somehow they are like similar in terms of recognition. I think in the orientation or the platform on mobile is not similar as for desktop or laptop. Though, you may still try the OCR still by activating the narrator, then once you heard the voice of the narrator you simply used the key command to capture the image by pressing Shift plus Caps lock plus D. Again, you have to make sure that the cursor is pointed to the graphics and the narrator gives you some description but, again not that full to describe images with compare of the Seeing AI app for mobile. I still believe that this will be more improves on the future releases of Windows 10. For now that is the only thing I've got for you or perhaps others could shed some details for this one.

Welcome to NVDA 2018: complete package for parts 2 and 3 posted

Hi everyone,

The complete package for Welcome to NVDA 2018 parts 2 and 3 are now up. Part 2 talks about basics, including NVDA m,modifier key, keyboard layouts, NVDA menu, basic keyboard and touch commands and more. Part 3 is all about objects, including object properties and hierarchy, object navigation, review cursor, mouse, more touch interaction scenarios and others.

The parts are:

Last minute changes:

  • For those who’ve downloaded segments on NVDA menu and touch interaction, you need to download them again as I removed references to alpha builds.

Note on future parts: the next four parts (parts 4 through 7) will be divided into multiple sections, with part 5 (Popular Apps) split into three files and others into two. There will be last minute changes to parts 4 and 6 in order to correct a critical bug (part 4) and introduce what’s coming in NVDA 2018.1 (part 6).

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Hank,

It's an odd issue.  It does sound like something perhaps wasn't registered properly when Jaws was installed or uninstalled.  I didn't have a solution and evidently, no-one else here did either as I know you've posted about this before.  Have you asked on one of the Jaws forums?

In any case, I'm glad you've got it resolved for now.

Regards

Quentin.

Hello just for the hell of it I installed jaws 18 along with jaws 2018 and now the nvda doesn't give me the error message

not sure if installing jaws 18 fixed the jaws 2018 dll issue with nvda can any one please confirm this am trying to figure out if I need to send a nvda log with the error that it was giving me

something screwy is conflicting I mean I got the issue fixed for now but I need to see if I am the only one having this issue if not then I think a bug needs to be filed.

if I am the only one running in to this issue  what can I do to help track this issue?

Hank

The other thing I meant to ask, had you uninstalled anything else?  It looks like the issue was a DLL file being unregistered inadvertently and uninstalling something is usually the culprit there.  Microsoft Office particularly is a bad one for that.
