I also wish to thank joseph for all the work he has done over the last few years on the tutorial and other items
I appreciate hearing examples of how to use the material that would be in the written tutorial available from nvda It was the audio tutorials that really got me into using the screen reader as my main one on windows Ian

Hi,
The tutorial is about 560 MB (uncompressed).
I can add a file that describes topics discussed and upload it as part of the zip file, but this means everyone must download the file again, which means precious bandwidth (well, some will need to download the file again).
As for putting up links to my website: I'd advise against that, as the site may disappear someday, there might be a new location for tutorials and such.
Cheers,

Hi Joseph
I just downloaded your tutorials in the zip file and apart from the last couple of files they were named and the other ones had section. but did not say what they covered unless you go to the website.
Would it be possible to put into the zip file either in or html what they refer to like on the website of yours.
I know i could easy do it my self but then every one would have to do it to if they want to know what the files refer to.
If it was done by you every one that downloaded the zip file would have the either or html file to refer to.
I was just thinking if some one burned your tutorials onto a disk with a copy of nvda and gave it away.
They might not have internet access and would not know what sections cover with out the file.
And listening to the whole lot.
If the file is html they can as you know just jump down by headings then refer on the html file to which mp3 file it points to.

And also refer to your website when they do have internet access.

Dear global NVDA community,
It is done! I'm delighted to announce the immediate release of the long-awaited update to a popular series of free tutorials for NVDA users: Welcome to NVDA, now in its third edition. Based on NVDA 2018.1 with some features from 2017.4, this tutorial set will take you on a cruise around NVDA world, including installation, concepts, usage, commands, configuration, tools, add-ons and beyond.
The complete package (as a zip file) with introduction and what's new, the main tutorial series, and two addenda can be found at:
http://www.josephsl.net/files/nvda18/Welcome%20to%20NVDA%202018%20Audio%20Tu torial.zip
The changes made between 2015 and 2018 editions are too numerous to list, but the highlights include use of a completely new speech synthesizer, web browsing using Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox, new settings and concepts, and so many changes to add-ons and other topics. It'll take pages to talk about changes between 2013 and 2018 editions, as there are so many to list.

Firefox is copyright Mozilla Foundation. Other products mentioned in the tutorial set are copyrighted by makers of these products. Welcome to NVDA tutorial set is copyright 2013-2018 Joseph Lee, with permissive license for free distribution and sharing.
One major announcement: this will be my last grand scale tutorial project for the NVDA community. We have better tutorials now, including the official NVDA Basic Training module from NV Access. If anyone wants to produce the fourth edition of Welcome to NVDA (perhaps in 2020), you have my blessing. All I ask of you is that you do it not for fame or glory, but because you love this community.
Also, regarding payments for my work: the Welcome to NVDA series is, was, and should remain free in consideration for many people who do not have financial security to pay for assistance or product tutorials. If you insist on paying me for this tutorial, I'd rather ask you to donate to NV Access instead so NVDA screen reader development can continue. If you still insist on paying me (apart from offering me a scholarship at Cal State LA; joking), I'd still ask you to donate to NV Access, or if you want, a worthy project that improves lives in the long run.
Other final matters:
* Text transcriptions are always welcome. * Translations are more than welcome. * Converting this into other formats is welcome (including DAISY). * I hereby give you permission to quote my tutorial for different purposes (writing essays, as part of a research paper, websites, mainstream media and what not). All I ask is a small citation.
Final remarks: I'd like to thank you all for your support for the last six weeks. All of you are a part of this effort.
Enjoy (and share) the tutorial set, and once again, welcome to NVDA 2018!
Cheers,
Joseph

hi. do you mean that 2003 version of word is no longer supported by nvda, (because nvda in 2018 supports uia for accessibility of word? i advocate and admire you, because you stock with your favor, and did not change your software, just for change and beeing up to date! I strongly suspect a bug in the code handling ui for speeding up later versions of word to be the issue here. Maybe its not detecting the older versions of the program and defaulting correctly trying to run code as well

When should you use development snapshots? Right now! I would Use Master snapshots, because they have been tested for two weeks. It is beta software like the RC versions are for the major versions like 2018.1. I use Next snapshots, because they are even more up to date, and I like testing new code. The more advanced should use those. Have a great one! Sent from Mail for Windows 10

To be fair, the next snaps have been very reliable recently. This is purely a fault where the correct dialogue is not being brought up, You can see the errors in the log quite clearly in fact. I am not sure how the download is being made, but suspect its the same routine as for installed copies, and the ability to defer installation and the use in portable versions has caused the confusion where pointers are shall we say not pointing to the right bit of code!
It after all does not result in a no nvda situation merely a failure to update. Brian

Gene nz .
And also refer to your website when they do have internet access.

One major announcement: this will be my last grand scale tutorial project for the NVDA community. We have better tutorials now, including the official NVDA Basic Training module from NV Access.
Cheers,

Re: NVDA And The Password
Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
In what context does this occur. Obviously, nvda responds to what the application is doing to control this. If you have echo keys as they are typed on on some dodgy web sites I've noticed it saying p star a star etc, when the keyboard repeat should be off. I have not seen this on good software or web sites. s. Some web sites allow you to toggle speaking of passwords on and off of course, and there is I think an nvda add on that allows you to hear passwords. After all if you are alone and want to make sure you typed it correctly, why not? Thus I think in order to answer your question we would need to know the specific case when its happening and you think it should not so others can test it. Brian

I have never had a situation where a reload of the operating system has been needed. I personally feel that this option is used far too often before the actual reason is known and is therefore not a cure, merely a very labour intensive way to put of the time when it will happen again. Just saying. Brian

My reason is that as an admin you have no control of what x user does, have they installed and removed software, do they have spyware, did they have something from another source.
You could take it back step by step but that could take a while.
Usually I start from the basics.
What is the issue, firstly, reformat time.
Next, load windows, load all programs I use.
Load all the software the user says they use.
Usually at this point things work.
Test the hardware, if its dirty clean it, if something is broken though fix that.
Usually its a user action, and a reformat makes it all nice till the user screws up again.
If its hardware then you notice it soon enough when you start the box.
In most situations software wise, its never your standard software windows and office, cloud software, itunes and a few other things, runtimes, codecs, brousers.
Over that, there is no way for me the tech to know what is screwed without a good reformat to see if its anything really bad.
On the times I have worked top to bottom in this way even if I know the issue its usually because either I know the issue and can fix it, or I don't have time or the time I need to fix is shorter than standard.
I know for standard software configurations depending on speed though that it can take between 1-7 days to bring it back from the brink, test and varify what is going on.
But if I do it the other way, it can take me 3 days to fix the issue, maybe a few minutes to clear the issue but ages to fix dammage caused by the repair.
Even if its just a user account issue that can take me 2 hours alone to fix even if I know what I am doing.
Happily due to the clients I service not being of the teen ager type anymore they usually leave their systems at standard config which means mostly I don't need the system for more than a couple days unless something fails, or they tell me something what they want before they just go ahead and get it.
For example I have had users ask me for x bit of software, only to say I have issues with my system because I was trying to get x bit of software for y function so I loaded all this stuff on and now the system isn't working.
Or I needed x bit of software to do things and it said I had a problem so I did all this stuff and now its not working.
Most of the time I know where to get x bit of software and can spend 5 minutes installing it.
In those cases I have to shake my head and just push through.
Most of the time its junk cleanout though due to a spyware issue I just reformatted and then things worked again.
Ofcause I made sure to note down and install said functionality which after I was done the user suddenly decides they no longer need.
Ofcause there can be the the system doesn't work because a bit of hardware say wireless card just doesn't work right and I have all sorts of virus issues.
I get home, I connect the system, there are no issues.
I run the wireless card there are issues.
The wireless card is searched, and I find x hardware and in fact company doesn't exist anymore.
I have to wait for new hardware which happily does work, stupidly I got the wrong sized thing which just means I have a system now which I work on which is full of celotaped things but it works well enough.

It needs a sit down and a logical mind to do one test at a time and put things back as they were if it made no difference. Brian

Have you tried to kill your nvda.ini in %appdata% There are 2 things to try. The first is to simply reformat. The other is to make another account transfer your files over to that one, delete your other account. You may need to reinstall things like dropbosx but everything else should work.

Re: having trouble downloading the tutorial in zipped file
Why couldn't it be downloaded? Did the error
give any reason? The size of the file is irrelevant.
Don't you have other browsers on the
computer? If so, why didn't you try one or more? If you have another
browser, unless you get some sort of error message that precludes any browser
from being able to do something, you should always try one or more
others.
