Hi, speaking of slow! I tried to upload the zipped files onto open drive.  But it did not go through.  I left the computer and went to do something else. When I came back. It still was 55 minutes to upload. Now it’s on open drive and I sent the list the link. If anybody wants it.

I never actually keep a public build handy, it's that stable at least for my machine. And if it brakes thee's narrator.

Glad you got the issue fixed and glad it now works.

Take care

I didn't say you didn't have a slow download.  I'm saying that that is your individual experience and when I said I was skeptical, I meant that I am very skeptical that your problem is a general one.  I didn't say that clearly in that message but I did in either a preceeding or a follow-up one.  Based on one person's experience, that is not grounds to say that a faster site is needed.  If the problem was widespread, that would be different.  But we have not seen any other complaints about slow downloads, by which I mean half an hour or hour downloads.

In what context does this occur. Obviously, nvda responds to what the
application is doing to control this. If you have echo keys as they are
typed on on some dodgy web sites I've noticed it saying p star a star etc,
when the keyboard repeat should be off. I have not seen this on good
software or web sites. s. Some web sites allow you to toggle speaking of
passwords on and off of course, and there is I think an nvda add on that
allows you to hear passwords. After all if you are alone and want to make
sure you typed it correctly, why not? Thus I think in order to answer your
question we would need to know the specific case when its happening and you
think it should not so others can test it.

it displays the info as it should but the din is silly.
I strongly suspect a bug in the code handling ui for speeding up later

I think it might have a lot to do with that yes. However if I want to use it again at the moment I can load in a portable version of the last release of nvda. Its only the snapshot master which breaks 2003/2.

I've also a suspicion that it might be causing issues with Jarte at times, but in this case its not page breaks, its fonts.

error sound an stays on te side of the break you were on. the only way past

is browse mode then a switch back to focus mode to enter text again. The
lesser of these which does not seem to affect function but does generate the

word pane and multiple error bleeps is the spellcheck of a document
afterwards, ie from the menu options.
it displays the info as it should but the din is silly.
I strongly suspect a bug in the code handling ui for speeding up later
versions of word to be the issue here. Maybe its not detecting the older
versions of the program and defaulting correctly trying to run code as well

as the normal new code at the same time causing the noise and lack of cursor

progress at page breaks.
Anyone care to comment other than castigating me for using old versions of

Word. I have my reasons for doing so which I'd rather not go into in this
place.

I have the master installed and use next portably just to keep an eye on the things. I found the bug earlier but as folk on the dev site seem to be all over this hiccup I've not bothered to upload my log to the issue tracker as I'm sure its know about.

When should you use development snapshots?
Right now!
I would Use Master snapshots, because they have been tested for two weeks. It is beta software like the RC versions are for the major versions like 2018.1.
I use Next snapshots, because they are even more up to date, and I like testing new code. The more advanced should use those.
Have a great one!

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Yes but you need to do that on github.
In any case Joseph says they are aware of it and in any case I pointed it out in the dev list earlier today as well, so I'll wait and see, but as my previous message says, the file is downloaded and is in the temp folder you just need to run it. the only fault is that the bit that runs it did not work that was all.

Hi, speaking of slow! I tried to upload the zipped files onto open drive.  But it did not go through.  I left the computer and went to do something else. When I came back. It still was 55 minutes to upload. Now it’s on open drive and I sent the list the link. If anybody wants it.

If it was, then that would be very uncommon.  It may be that, just having been announced, a lot of people, far more than usual, tried to download the file at the same time.  But I'm skeptical because we heard no reports from others and if there were such an issue, we would expect to see people talking about how slow the download is or that they couldn't do so.  Therefore, I'm very skeptical.

It might be a a bandwidth issue. its a very slow connection and a very large
file. Its only running at 1.2meg a second here with long pauses as it goes

Re: It is accomplished: Welcome to NVDA 2018 is now COMPLETE!

Roger Stewart

Thanks very much for this tutorial!  I just got it and will put it on my Victor Stream for listening.

I don't know what all the fuss about download speed was about, but I downloaded it in 2 and a half minutes and I don't think that is very long at all!

I appreciate all the effort you have put into NVDA over the past few years.

Dear global NVDA community,

It is done! I’m delighted to announce the immediate release of the long-awaited update to a popular series of free tutorials for NVDA users: Welcome to NVDA, now in its third edition. Based on NVDA 2018.1 with some features from 2017.4, this tutorial set will take you on a cruise around NVDA world, including installation, concepts, usage, commands, configuration, tools, add-ons and beyond.

The complete package (as a zip file) with introduction and what’s new, the main tutorial series, and two addenda can be found at:

http://www.josephsl.net/files/nvda18/Welcome%20to%20NVDA%202018%20Audio%20Tutorial.zip

The changes made between 2015 and 2018 editions are too numerous to list, but the highlights include use of a completely new speech synthesizer, web browsing using Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox, new settings and concepts, and so many changes to add-ons and other topics. It’ll take pages to talk about changes between 2013 and 2018 editions, as there are so many to list.

Copyright notices: NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) is copyright 2006-2018 by NV Access Limited, released under GPL 2. Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Edge, Windows OneCore voices and related products are copyright Microsoft Corporation. Firefox is copyright Mozilla Foundation. Other products mentioned in the tutorial set are copyrighted by makers of these products. Welcome to NVDA tutorial set is copyright 2013-2018 Joseph Lee, with permissive license for free distribution and sharing.

One major announcement: this will be my last grand scale tutorial project for the NVDA community. We have better tutorials now, including the official NVDA Basic Training module from NV Access. If anyone wants to produce the fourth edition of Welcome to NVDA (perhaps in 2020), you have my blessing. All I ask of you is that you do it not for fame or glory, but because you love this community.

Also, regarding payments for my work: the Welcome to NVDA series is, was, and should remain free in consideration for many people who do not have financial security to pay for assistance or product tutorials. If you insist on paying me for this tutorial, I’d rather ask you to donate to NV Access instead so NVDA screen reader development can continue. If you still insist on paying me (apart from offering me a scholarship at Cal State LA; joking), I’d still ask you to donate to NV Access, or if you want, a worthy project that improves lives in the long run.

Other final matters:

  • Text transcriptions are always welcome.
  • Translations are more than welcome.
  • Converting this into other formats is welcome (including DAISY).
  • I hereby give you permission to quote my tutorial for different purposes (writing essays, as part of a research paper, websites, mainstream media and what not). All I ask is a small citation.

Final remarks: I’d like to thank you all for your support for the last six weeks. All of you are a part of this effort.

Enjoy (and share) the tutorial set, and once again, welcome to NVDA 2018!

Cheers,

Joseph

I agree. I'm not picky about the speed as far as downloading something. One time I downloaded an oldies show and it took about 18 minutes but I went off and did something else while the show was downloading.

A faster site isn't needed.  People simply have to not expect everything instantly in this childish instant gratification of everything culture.  It took me about eighteen minutes to download the material.  Tragic that it took so long.  So I did other things while the download occurred.

Hi Joseph, One thing to warn people about the download from that location is
only running about 1.2mb a second so its going to be quite a long download.
What is needed is a faster site.
