Re: orbit reader20 now on sale
They are loud. You will be able to hear it over the mic. Even though I don't like the fact you specifically need a windows machine to update (they tell me to leave my opinions to my self on that one and just deal with it) I might get me one at least for voiceover work or what not, or just to practice reading braille.

Hi Just to let you all know, the orbit reader20 low cost $449 braille display is now on sale. It works very good with NVDA. It is liquid and dust resistant, dots do not give when pressed, feels like braille on elevator doors or ATM machines, very rugged and durable meant for use in extreme hostile environments. Re: Please explain this info I got about NVDA!
Hi, Important note: this will be my last post on this forum for a while, as I’m desperate to take a break from everything NVDA for a while (except for translations). Besides that: If I understand her argument, your friend prefers the core functions of NVDA to be written in C++, and let others build things on top via Python and other languages. This is called “language binding”, and this is precisely how wxPython is written: C++ core with python bindings. In case of NVDA, yes, the primary language in use is Python, but some parts (notably features that require speed) are written in C++. It is arranged that way because Python allows rapid development, but the cost, as she points out, is long-term viability in terms of maintenance. As for upgrading to Python 3: we’re getting there. A crucial dependency has just been satisfied, so it’ll be matter of time before the upgrade can commence. As for your friend: please have her email me with any questions, as well as have her CC info@... for further details. Or you can ask your friend to join nvda-devel mailing list. Cheers, Joseph

Hi all, I was talking to a friend on Facebook. She is a programmer. This went over my head. We were talking about python and NVDA. I will put right below what she said, so you can comment on it, because this is so over my head! She really wants to get involved with the NVDA project. Here is what she said. I am a fan of Python as a primary language for a system. Something like NVDA should have a C++ core with language-of-choice wrappers. Python is having trouble evolving without completely changing the language, which leaves the risk of building a future of dead, legacy libraries quite high. It reminds me of what happened to FORTRAN. Moreover, Python is joy well suited to continually running, closed loops services like NVDA would be. that said, upgrading to Python 3 is a helpful step that MUST be done. It is unfortunate that Python was the initial language of choice because this will have to be done again in the coming years. By the time all is said and done, Python will end up looking looking like "JavaScript without curly braces", which implies the question, "why not have just adopted JavaScriptNode.js in the first place?" Please explain all of this, and I hope it makes sense to you what she is saying. She is really interested in NVDA being a programmer herself. David Moore Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Adding custom entries to insert symbols dialogue?
Jacob Kruger
Bit of a silly question, but, while I have the insert symbols add-on showing up in my add-ons manager, I can't find anything like it's data files under either %appData%, or under program files?
Asking since would have assumed that it might allow me to add an entry to the list of symbols on offer? Jacob Kruger Blind biker Skype: BlindZA "Resistance is futile...but, acceptance is versatile..."

Re: How to not start NVDA at login?

If nvda runs on the login screen then you can bring up the nvda menu and change the way nvda starts or in your case not at all to get into windows After the required changes save the settings and restart, then you should be good to go

Hi all, I somehow broke my NVDA by writing a buggy addon and now NVDA doesn’t work. Moreover it somehow prevents the other screenreaders (jaws, narrator) from running. To make things even worse, the keyboard doesn’t seem to be working - otherwise I would’ve opened a command line terminal and typed up the command to erase the file in appdata\roaming\NVDA\globalPlugins. Insert+Q doesn’t work either.
So my question is: Is there a way to not start NVDA at login time? Or at least make it not load the addons?
NVDA seems to be working fine at the login screen where I need to enter the password, but that is probably because it doesn’t load addons at this time. Once I log in, I hear the four tones NVDA start sound and right after that my keyboard is pretty much dead. I know it’s my fault, I wrote some buggy addon code, but now I really want to revive my computer.
Thank you Tony

RES: [nvda] In-Process 1st February 2018

Hello! Regarding to visual studio, does it apply to vs 2017 comunity edition? I just installed it and fork a copy of nvda. But it seams to freeze when I start to navigate in code. Maybe I need some shortcuts to perform the most common tasks in vs.
Thanks

You should be able to go into save mode, with
sighted help. You can then uninstall NVDA or, perhaps, someone can tell us
how to remove the add on files.

Well if you have a portable nvda on you or can get one and maybe a sightling to right click nvda icon for you and quit it or end it in task manager then you can use that and then well run a system restore, or just clear the mangled file that may work.

Just wondering whether anyone else has encountered this issue, or whether it’s peculiar to my situation (original report below).

Sent: Sunday, January 7, 2018 6:32 PM To: nvda@nvda.groups.io Subject: [nvda] Lost USB connection with braille display after resuming from Windows 10 lock screen
Testing with a Freedom Scientific (now VFO) Focus 40 Blue braille display, NVDA 2017.4 and the latest Windows 10 1709 release, if I switch to the Windows 10 lock screen and then allow the host computer and the braille display to suspend, the display is not detected after resuming from suspend. The only solution I found was to restart NVDA, after which the display was again detected.
Can anyone else reproduce this issue?
I can test with a Baum display as well, but I haven’t done so yet.
