Re: a newcomer, who is seemingly lost

Since the person hasn't responded who wrote about
the problem, his screen name is The Wolf, I'll say that this problem may or may
not be what I thought it likely was but here is something you can try if you are
currently running JAWS 2018. It is a message he sent the list two or three
weeks ago. You can have as many copies of JAWS on your machine as you wish
so you can try this and see if it solves the problem. If not, you can try
other things others have suggested. I'm not optimistic about this trial
and error method but you never know. But doing what is discussed in the
below quoted message is easy and if it solves the problem, you can just leave
two copies of JAWS on your machine. I think that if you install another
copy of JAWS, you will have to create a short cut command such as control j for
whatever version you want to be able to run in that way. I believe that if
you have a current shortcut, it will be removed but you will have to check about
that.
Also, you may have to reset the run before boot up
and whatever other commands there are that are relevant. But I wouldn't
have JAWS 2018 run for now. I wouldn't run it either during testing.
Just have JAWS 18 run. Then see if you can run NVDA. Try running the
NVDA.exe file while JAWS 18 is running. If it doesn't run, you can see if
there is an error message. If it runs, you will either have two
screen-readers running at once or the NVDA installer will be smart enough to
unload JAWS when the talking installer is ready to talk.
The message is below my signature.
Gene
Hello just for the hell of it I installed jaws 18
along with jaws 2018 and now the nvda doesn't give me the error
message
not sure if installing jaws 18 fixed the jaws 2018
dll issue with nvda can any one please confirm this am trying to figure out if I
need to send a nvda log with the error that it was giving me
something screwy is conflicting I mean I got the
issue fixed for now but I need to see if I am the only one having this issue if
not then I think a bug needs to be filed.
if I am the only one running in to this issue
what can I do to help track this issue?

Version 18.02.1 emergency patch for Windows 10 App Essentils and StationPlaylist Studio add-ons posted
#addonrelease
Hi everyone,
The following bulletin is applicable for people using recent NVDA next snapshots. For those running master snapshots or 2017.4 (or older releases), you can ignore this:
For people using Windows 10 App Essentials and/or StationPlaylist Studio: when add-on updates appear and after saying “yes”, NVDA may play an error sound and add-on won’t be updated. This is caused by changes to NVDA’s own update downer as part of changes in recent NVDA next snapshots. An emergency patch is now available to correct this problem, and you need to apply this manually.
To apply this patch:
To check which version of NVDA you’ve got, go to NVDA menu/Help/About. If the version text is of the form “next-xxxxx,hash”, then this patch is applicable to you.
Important note for SPL add-on users using 15.x LTS releases: no update at this time, so you can ignore this.
Thank you, and sorry for the inconvenience. Cheers, Joseph

Re: a newcomer, who is seemingly lost
Gene
I don't think any of this will work. It
sounds as though it is the same problem I saw discussed here before. This
is the first time the person has used NVDA. The person is a new NVDA
user. If he had used it before, he wouldn't have said, > I was under
the impression that NVDA was equipped with a talking installer." The
person would have run the talking installer since it runs automatically.
I wouldn't do anything until we see if the person
who had what appears to be the same problem responds to the thread. If
that doesn't happen in a day or two, I'm not sure what the next step should
be. You can spend a good deal of time trying all sorts of things and not
solve anything if the problem is what I think it is. If it isn't, then
some of this trial and error may be in order.

lost 1. take your machine back via system restore to before your first attempt at loading nvda. make sure your jaws functions correctly. 2. Try running the archive of nvda and see if nvda then mostly works, ie you can bring up the menu and all of that stuff. Turn off Jaws. 3 Check that nvda is still working with the espeak voice it has by default. 4. Now do an install. There is nothing really for it to talk to you about, since the only screen you need speech for is the main one which allows limited options important for when nvda starts. For now at least say do not start when computer starts. Once its installed you should hear the rising tones as it reboots in when you do the right alt n key and everything should be working including the menus and property sheets with the default synth. 5. Now you can if you want explore the synths available or the voice variants in espeak etc. Once you have got the basics working save the settings. 6. here I'd also suggest you create a portable version in a folder you can easily get to, this will also allow all currently set parameters to be saved so you have a back up of your configuration. 7. Now come out of nvda with insert/q and then try your jaws. make sure it still works OK. If all is well then there is no problem. Try a complete windows restart and check that jaws starts and that you can shut it down and start nvda with the shortcut. if it works all is fine. Basically if anything fails during this, then let us know the details on here. It is I suppose possibly its avg, but I have not had recent experience of it. I rather tend to use Microsoft's own solution with a manually run malware remover every week or so, just in case myself. It could be any other sort of security software as well, but one would hope a message might come up and tell you of a problem in that case. If using Windows 10, it can be very handy to invoke narrator and see if it spots anything neither screenreader is showing you while you diagnose the issue. many people seem to think nvda has not installed simply because it installs with very few choices, as all the configuring is done after the install, as and whey you feel the need. Re: New Skype Installation a Complete Disaster!
Gene
It's unfortunate you have such a well developed
ability to ignore facts and real situations and possibilities. Malware can
attack your computer without you doing anything incorrect. there is a
growing problem of malware infesting hacked ads even on the most reputable
sites. So you trust malware makers not to attack your computer without
your knowledge more than you trust reputable malware companies to gibve you some
amount of meaningful protection? There are malware program manufacturers
that are reputable and very highly thought of. Not trusting anyone in the
context you speak of is irrational and ignores well established facts. And
to make matters worse, you are using a vulnerable version of Windows and an an
increasingly aging browser that won't have any security updates for XP users in
about six months if you use the ESR version. You are also not using the
ESR version as far as I know which means your browser is increasingly vulnerable
because it hasn't received updates in quite some time.
Are you at least disabling JAVA scripts unless they
are needed? That will give you quite a bit of protection on the
Internet.
As I said, your ability to completely ignore facts
is unfortunate and evidently, well entrenched.

Re: suggestion for feedback
Well I do teach some users bits of the software, 7zip for example, however I find that if the desktop icon to whatever software I have installed is removed the user or at least users I work with don't even bother with the software.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Its in plain sight ofcause I can't deny that, but without the icons or pinned shortcuts the completely visible software is completely safe from users. Ofcause they need to be admin or use my account which I put on all my systems I service so its not like they can just run it with my password for those that I think will try to see what it does. Most family though doesn't bother with it.

Actually as I've said before, simply reformatting is like sweeping dust under the carpet, sooner or later you will find it again.

If you run hijack this please be careful what you delete, as there are no protections. You can screw things up by deleting routines that are needed.

But for all we know, it's some sort of corruption of something. You might want to investigate the malware possibility by signing up with bleeping computer and having the geeks who hang out on the site help you run various detection programs. Even that wouldn't rule out the possibility but it would be a more thorough detection protocol than most people do. You may need sighted help to do some of the things they will want you to do. I'd feel very irked at such a weird situation and simply have to find a reason. The other day I had to remove the dreaded Avast from a system which had acquired it via a ccleaner download, and although it seems to have worked well, now when certain programs are run, the computer actually restarts itself. Numerous tests suggest all is as it was and even bring it back to before installation of avast makes it do the same thing.Luckily these pieces of software are system tools by third parties so not really an issue most of the time, but it does make one realise how many weird ways there are to run-in a perfectly working system. Short of a complete re install of everything there is probably no way to fix it as it is the diagnostic tools that cause the crashes. Brian bglists@... Sent via blueyonder. Of course, it's up to you how much time you want to spend solving what is a minor annoyance, I wouldn't have spent much time on it at all, myself. There are some problems that, in my opinion, aren't worth spending time trying to solve when there is an easy work around. We have restored Windows to two different restore points dated before I noticed the problem. 3. We repaired Office through a long Internet connected repair process. Warmly, Ralph

Re: Google drive again
Brian's Mail list account
Basically, if you use the old version, ie the old archive installer not the new stub installer, it can work, but you have to stop it trying to update asap.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
I'm not sure where one might obtain the old installer from though. I'm not sure if I still have a copy, but I'll have a look later. Note though that every so often it will fail to synchronise and tell you its not supported, then about a day later it seems to come back. I suspect in time even this acceptance will be stopped, but the reason for this is no doubt to trigger those using the old version to download the new one. Minimum requirements for the new version is as with nvda Windows 7 sp1. This is once again mainly down to the new more secure routines offered by 7 and up, and as they are not in xp you get that wonderful catch all error. I also see this if for example your xp pc is using an old style amd Athlon chip without sse2 instruction set. Ccleaner, MSSe and firefox after version48 will not run on such machines, to name but three. Brian bglists@... Sent via blueyonder. If using xp, and not using machines with amd processors, the anti virus Microsoft Security essentials is still updating.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Do not use Skype on old machines, too many drop outs. I am on the look out for a decent browser for an xp machine as firefox 52 takes an age to boot up and also seems unwilling to show some frames when run under xp. Most of the other options stopped supporting xp some time ago. I did notice some stuff both on github and on more obscure web sites about people working on windows hacks to give xp some of the extra routines found in later windows. Myself I'd view these with a little suspicion as if the user is going to trust unknown hackers to extend windows, then said unknown hackers might in fact be wolves in sheep's clothing. Re: Keyboard Conflict with an Addon
Yes, disable all addons, then load each one, then find which are in conflict then put that one out.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
I had this with plugins, I update winamp, wanamp crashes and doesn't respond, clear all plugins then transfer the standard ones back, then see what has failed, fine what has failed, put it aside, copy in rest till more fail, put those asside. Then go online and update incompatible plugins there is usually an update.
