Either your mouse pointer is not actually in the right position to activate the link (if you are using right click, this may well be the case), or, as has already been said, the link takes to you to a page, and isn’t actually an mp3 download. Hit enter and see what happens. I personally much prefer the way Firefox handles downloads….

Some sites actively prohibit downloading of their content. I've noticed this
for copyright material, where you can listen but not store locally. there
are of course ways around many of these but I'd be a bit worried about
mentioning any here except the obvious one of virtunual recorder.

Some sites won't let you save the file using save target as. Save target as

is described by some people as the way to save everything. It's not. You
are saving the actual link, the way that site is organized. Press enter on
the play link and let it start to play in whatever browser you are using, if

you are using Firefox or Chrome. Then, when play begins, use the command
control s to open a save dialog. Use that dialog to save the audio file.
I'm not sure that will work in Internet Explorer but if you are using
Internet Explorer, I think it will either open the save dialog or it will
open Windows Media Player or some other program. You can tell us what
happens and we might be able to tell you how to save the file from the
player.

Tell us the site, often they have a different link to download to the play
one.
There could be many reasons apart from copyright, it may well be that the
files are not in the same place all the time and the html inteermediary page
then redirects the user to the right place. Examining some of these
downloaded small html files can give a clue to where the file actually is
stored but not always.

Re: New Skype Installation a Complete Disaster!

Gene

There are sites where JAVA scripts are necessary.  You have different alternatives.  You can have more than one copy of firefox on your machine.  You can have whatever version you have now with JAVA scripts off, and a portable version, the same version but a portable one, with JAVA scripts on.  You would use one when you want to have JAVA scripts off and the other when you want them on.

You can turn scripts on when you need them in Firefox in about:config, and then turn them off again, but that is inconvenient.  You can use a program like noscript.  I haven't used it to any extent and I'm not sure how convenient or accessible it is.

I didn't say anything about your sincerity.  You obviously believe what you are saying.  You never present any basis for it nor do you explain why computer and security experts who say you should use such programs are wrong.

This appears to verge on classic conspiracy theory thinking.  With all the businesses and government agencies and schools and scientific organizations in the world who rely on such programs, and with all the white hat hackers in the world, if a program were selling information stolen by their programs, it would be headline news.

If you trust malware designers to keep your computer safe more than reputable antimalware programs, that's your choice.  It is not logical but that's your choice.

gene,
i disabled javascript and many features of firefox.
but i said with complete sincerity that i dont trust any security
programs and never use them.
i changed many settings in options and also about:config
i realy wish to know which setting i change and i cant login to my
quora account with disabling javascript!
can you please tell me changing what setting may caused this problem for me?
openning sites with javascript, displaying frames and flash content is
extremely difficult, specially for screen reader users.
i realy dont believe in updating softwares, operating system and
concerning about technology.
it causes just afraid, worried, and sadness to always be change, think
about beeing updating and just use new technologies.

Re: Earlier version working

but for me, who use nvda 2017.2, nvda becomes silent many times, i
should unload it again,
after ten seconds nvda loads again and only says: nvda loading please
waite and i cant do anytthing.
one time i experienced this very seriously and could not do anything
just says: please waite!
so, i restart my system to work again.
for me, previous versions until 2016.2 was very great and responsive.
between newer versions, i only did not have this issue (at least most
of times was responsive), only 2017.1

You can always complicate matters unnecessarily.  The rule about subject lines is a standard part of netiquette.  You can have subject lines that say things like, NVdA crashes when Microsoft Word is run.  That is a subject line.  You can go into detail in the message.  If the problem is solved, the solution should not be in a changed subject line.  It should be in a message body.  If you can give concrete examples where a subject line needs to be changed or cannot be adequate, I'll consider them.  I can not see any such cases.  A subject is that which something is about.  How can you have a subject that can't be defined in such a way?

Please don't change subject lines and start new threads when talking about
the same subject.  You started an entirely new thread and your subject line
has little or no meaning to anyone who doesn't remember what the other
thread was about.  In addition, if someone is following the thread in the
archives, if you change the subject line, you start an entirely new thread
and make it much harder for people to follow the discussion.  Also, if
people read mail by conversation in their e-mail program, they see the new
subject line as a completely new conversation.

A subject line is to tell what the message is about.  It is not to state
something pertaining to the subject that should be in the message body.  the
entire thread has been about something you are having a problem with.  The
subject didn't change to a statement that you got it working.  the subject
is still the same.  That you got it working is a statement about the subject
that should be in the message body.

I am becoming increasingly concerning with the rampant misuse of subject
lines in this way on the lists I moderate and own.  I shall be commenting on
this increasingly when I see people do this sort of thing.  I do little
moderation but I consider this to be important.

I feel you are being a little unfair. I have no issue with people wanting
to use older systems, but I do feel that it does pay to know the risks.
There will always be niche users, but XP is still being used by one heck of
a lot of people out there, despite all you say. its a fact, I see it every
day and its exactly why I keep a couple of machines running it here to just
see what state the choices of what you can use are in now.

I also agree of course that many many sites and programs are suspect and
full of holes or infected with goodness only knows what. One has to live
with some risk but it can be reduced.

It's unfortunate you have such a well developed ability to ignore facts and

real situations and possibilities. Malware can attack your computer
without
you doing anything incorrect. there is a growing problem of malware
infesting hacked ads even on the most reputable sites. So you trust
malware
makers not to attack your computer without your knowledge more than you
trust reputable malware companies to gibve you some amount of meaningful
protection? There are malware program manufacturers that are reputable and

very highly thought of. Not trusting anyone in the context you speak of is

irrational and ignores well established facts. And to make matters worse,
you are using a vulnerable version of Windows and an an increasingly aging
browser that won't have any security updates for XP users in about six
months if you use the ESR version. You are also not using the ESR version
as far as I know which means your browser is increasingly vulnerable
because
it hasn't received updates in quite some time.

Are you at least disabling JAVA scripts unless they are needed? That will
give you quite a bit of protection on the Internet.

As I said, your ability to completely ignore facts is unfortunate and
evidently, well entrenched.

I have used NVDA successfully with Skype for many years.
Suddenly, tonight, on my Windows 7 laptop, when I entered
Skype, a new version was forcibly installed, something like
Version 8.1.2, and it presented me with an interface that I
could not comprehend with NVDA. None of the shortcut keys
that I previously used would work. I received a call from a
friend right after this forced installation and could not
answer it, because the usual alt-PageUp key combo for
answering a call was useless, as were all other previous
shortcut keys. What is the solution to this problem. I
totally uninstalled Skype for now. Do we give up on Skype
as NVDA
users, or install a different version or perhaps some other chat
program?

A subject line is to tell what the message is about.  It is not to state something pertaining to the subject that should be in the message body.  the entire thread has been about something you are having a problem with.  The subject didn't change to a statement that you got it working.  the subject is still the same.  That you got it working is a statement about the subject that should be in the message body.

I am becoming increasingly concerning with the rampant misuse of subject lines in this way on the lists I moderate and own.  I shall be commenting on this increasingly when I see people do this sort of thing.  I do little moderation but I consider this to be important.

Subject: [nvda] Earlier version working

Well, in frustration, I uninstalled the latest version of NVDA and installed one from 2015.  Voila! Everything is working.  I don't know why.  No more unknowns and silences.  Since it's an earlier version perhaps the finer tunings don't work as well, but it's nice to have it back!

why not just buy it from    www.atguys.com

It's possible for sure, and is accessible out of the box. I do like the
extra add-on features that will let you hear the total time, elapsed time,
and time remaining in a track. I use those features regularly.

I've used it without any add-ons with no problems for quite a while now.

Winamp works fine with nvda by itself but there is an add on for it
that helps you find total time and time remaining and a few other
things with a few hotkeys. It can also turn the volume up and down
and even mute with ta key press so I like to use it.

There is an add-on for it. That will help quite a bit with usage.

Re: winamp with NVDA

Kerryn, the Winamp add-on is an official add-on. All official add-ons can be found at the following link:
Browse the page by the letter H for heading, or more quickly, do a search for the word winamp now that you know it's there. If you browse by heading, you'll find plenty of other add-ons to check out. Entering on the name of each one will take you to the page where you can learn more and download.
Also remember that you can always get to the same place through NVDA itself. Not knowing the Laptop key combinations, here's the instructions for desktop keyboard layout:
1. Press ctrl+n to get to the NVDA menu.
2. Arrow up and down to find the tools submenu, then press enter or right arrow to open the submenu. You can also press the letter t for the tools submenu.
3. Up and down arrow to find the manage add-ons submenu, then press enter to activate the dialogue. Pressing the letter A will also get you there from the tools submenu.
4. Tab or shif tab, closer in this case, to get add-ons, then press enter. This will open up the same web page I linked to earlier. This way you won't have to memorize the address or bookmark it.
With official add-ons, there is never any need to receive it from another member as there may be more of a possibility of being sent an incorrect or out-of-date version as the person sending it to you may not have received the latest version yet.
