Well, in frustration, I uninstalled the latest version of NVDA and installed
one from 2015. Voila! Everything is working. I don't know why. No more
unknowns and silences. Since it's an earlier version perhaps the finer
tunings don't work as well, but it's nice to have it back!

Windows did an update today, at least windows 7 did and itt was very insistant, every time I told it to defer it it came back so I had to close umpteen windows down after saving contents so it could restart.
One annoying thing about the restart of windows is that the window opened that has the countdown is not opened in the forground, so very often I've had the thing shut down while I was working on a document meaning I had to recover it from a list afterwarrds.

Its a pity that nvda could not spot update windows and alert one to their presence.

What I described about how to listen on this site isn't standard.  How this site works in that respect might be new to a lot of people, even if they use the Internet regulartly.

I didn't know how to work with the player until I experimented.  I pressed enter on the word application but nothing happpened.  I pressed enter on the word web in the phrase web player but nothing happened.  I then tried tabbing instead of down arrowing and I found the buttons I discussed.  I tried various things without having any idea if any would work. This approach did.

I'm not sure that will work in Internet Explorer but if you are using

The way you are doing it now, people have to verify the address of the site with an Internet search, go to the home page, then look for and go to what they think is the page you are having a problem with.

There could be many reasons apart from copyright, it may well be that the
files are not in the same place all the time and the html inteermediary page
then redirects the user to the right place. Examining some of these
downloaded small html files can give a clue to where the file actually is

Re: Using VLC media player with NVDA

hi.
did someone try vlc version 3?
the last version that i tried is 2.2.8.
it workes, but not very intuative like km or potplayer.
for example:
i cant go forward or backword using just left and right arrow keys
which makes navigation a little fifficult.
and when i go to preferences nvda says pane pane pane many times,
after announcing specific option, it tells about fonts!
exactly like the time that you use nvda+f!
what should i do to prevent this problem?

Re: explanation

Gene

I looked at the cite.  First, never assume that an audio link leads directly to the audio when you try save target and it doesn't work.  If you follow the link from the home page that says podcast, you are taken to a different web page from which you listen to the podcast.  Not everything that calls itself a podcast can be downloaded.  When you used save target as, you were saving the link to the page you need to go to.  Once you get there, you will see something, but I don't know just what because it may depend on the browser and screen-reader being used.  The combination of NVDA and Firefox shows, partway down the page, a line that says, web player and below that, a line that says application.
Don't down arrow past the line that says web player.  Start tabbing.  You will see a play button.  Press enter on it.  The podcast will start to play.  Using the space bar on the button won't work.  Never assume how things are laid out on web pages.  If something doesn't work and there is a link to follow, such as in this case to the podcast, follow it and see what happens.  Save target as works at times and it doesn't at other times.

Some sites won't let you save the file using save target as.  Save target as is described by some people as the way to save everything.  It's not.  You are saving the actual link, the way that site is organized.  Press enter on the play link and let it start to play in whatever browser you are using, if you are using Firefox or Chrome.  Then, when play begins, use the command control s to open a save dialog.  Use that dialog to save the audio file.  I'm not sure that will work in Internet Explorer but if you are using Internet Explorer, I think it will either open the save dialog or it will open Windows Media Player or some other program.  You can tell us what happens and we might be able to tell you how to save the file from the player.

Either your mouse pointer is not actually in the right position to activate the link (if you are using right click, this may well be the case), or, as has already been said, the link takes to you to a page, and isn’t actually an mp3 download. Hit enter and see what happens. I personally much prefer the way Firefox handles downloads….

Some sites actively prohibit downloading of their content. I've noticed this
for copyright material, where you can listen but not store locally. there
are of course ways around many of these but I'd be a bit worried about
mentioning any here except the obvious one of virtunual recorder.

Tell us the site, often they have a different link to download to the play
one.
There could be many reasons apart from copyright, it may well be that the
files are not in the same place all the time and the html inteermediary page
then redirects the user to the right place. Examining some of these
downloaded small html files can give a clue to where the file actually is
stored but not always.

Re: New Skype Installation a Complete Disaster!

Gene

There are sites where JAVA scripts are necessary.  You have different alternatives.  You can have more than one copy of firefox on your machine.  You can have whatever version you have now with JAVA scripts off, and a portable version, the same version but a portable one, with JAVA scripts on.  You would use one when you want to have JAVA scripts off and the other when you want them on.

You can turn scripts on when you need them in Firefox in about:config, and then turn them off again, but that is inconvenient.  You can use a program like noscript.  I haven't used it to any extent and I'm not sure how convenient or accessible it is.

I didn't say anything about your sincerity.  You obviously believe what you are saying.  You never present any basis for it nor do you explain why computer and security experts who say you should use such programs are wrong.

This appears to verge on classic conspiracy theory thinking.  With all the businesses and government agencies and schools and scientific organizations in the world who rely on such programs, and with all the white hat hackers in the world, if a program were selling information stolen by their programs, it would be headline news.

If you trust malware designers to keep your computer safe more than reputable antimalware programs, that's your choice.  It is not logical but that's your choice.

gene,
i disabled javascript and many features of firefox.
but i said with complete sincerity that i dont trust any security
programs and never use them.
i changed many settings in options and also about:config
i realy wish to know which setting i change and i cant login to my
quora account with disabling javascript!
can you please tell me changing what setting may caused this problem for me?
openning sites with javascript, displaying frames and flash content is
extremely difficult, specially for screen reader users.
i realy dont believe in updating softwares, operating system and
concerning about technology.
it causes just afraid, worried, and sadness to always be change, think
about beeing updating and just use new technologies.

hi brian.
do you mean that google drive can be used on xp again?
i did not test it until now, but in many different programs, i recieve
the error which you mentioned.

'if you were in the middle of something' the application that you worked
on it,
i dont remember the rest of error completely.
but i recieve this error very often!
do you mean that this is an error special for windows xp?
do users of other windows recieve this error?
etc.
God bless you all.

Strangely this morning Google drive has come back to xp again, using the

old

google drive software, not the new one which crashes with that wonderful
'if you were in the middle of something' error so beloved of xp users!
