So I usually get up at 6 am, turn on all the systems I can, and remote into all the systems that are active, and update them all with all the updates, by 7-7.30 updates come from ms and I update before I use the system.

Google appearing in Frame in Firefox
Cearbhall O'Meadhra
Hi all,
I am using Firefox latest version, windows 10 and Google search page with the latest NVDA.
I have set my default page in Firefox to: “https://www.google.ie/search?complete=0”
This has worked fine for many years until two nights ago.
Now Google opens up with some sort of frame that I cannot navigate clearly enough to describe here. The frame ends with a “got it” button which appears under the cursor when the page is fully loaded. I press enter or space bar to select the “got it” button in the hope that this will bring me back to the simple Google search edit box. However, nothing happens!
The screen goes completely still and no keys work on it. NVDA freezes. After about two minutes, NVDA wakes up and announces “Google” but then stops.
When I get a bit of reaction from the screen I can see that Google is in some sort of frame. I cannot find any description of frames in Firefox and so I am stumped!
Can anyone advise what is happening and what I can do to get back to my normal Google search window?
By the way, I had the latest Firefox when this problem first appeared. I have now gone back to Firefox 56.2 in the hope that the earlier Firefox would not invoke the Google frames but Google still does the same thing. I opened Google with the “search?complete=0” argument and it opens without any problem. This issue seems to apply only to Firefox when using the Google search engine.
Please help while I still have some hair left!
All the best,
Cearbhall

Re: Using VLC media player with NVDA
Christopher Bartlett
Thank you all. I've installed the NVDA addon and will be doing some more exploration later. For those interested, 3.0 brings functionality for casting directly to a Chromecast using the media/render menu option. If all goes well, your Chromecast should appear in the submenu that appears when you invoke this menu item. You will have to approve a UAC check, and then it just works. (Or rather, it just works sort of, when it feels like, according to no rhyme or reason I can yet discover, still it's better than the state of play before, and presumably, this functionality is under development.) As for moving around in a file ... there are commands for this. You should read the hotkey table. Shift-left or right for instance will move you a short increment; ctrl-left or right a longer increment (I can't remember the default increments, but they are probably configurable, given that this is vlc).

nvdaHelperRemote persists with latest snapshot
Christo de Klerk
Hello especially to the NVDA developers
A few days ago (a few snapshots ago) I wrote that when I updated NVDA to the new snapshot, I received an error message with the following label: nvdaHelperRemote (outprocMgrThreadFunc) The text of the error message is: Error registering focus winEvent hook Then there is an Ok button. When I Ok the dialog, NVDA works, except that there is no browse mode buffer which makes web browsing impossible. This problem persists with the very latest snapshot which I have just installed, so I had to fall back again to the last working snapshot which is from about 4 February. This happens only on my 64 bit machine. The result of this is that I have not been able to use the last number of snapshots and I have a real concern that this problem may manifest itself once 2018.1 gets released which would mean that I will not be able to use that version on my 64 bit machine. Does anyone have any idea what is happening here? Kind regards Christo

One annoying thing about the restart of windows is that the window opened that has the countdown is not opened in the forground, so very often I've had the thing shut down while I was working on a document meaning I had to recover it from a list afterwarrds. Its a pity that nvda could not spot update windows and alert one to their presence. Brian bglists@blueyonder.co.uk Sent via blueyonder. Re: explanation
Gene
What I described about how to listen on this site
isn't standard. How this site works in that respect might be new to a lot
of people, even if they use the Internet regulartly.
I didn't know how to work with the player until I
experimented. I pressed enter on the word application but nothing
happpened. I pressed enter on the word web in the phrase web
player but nothing happened. I then tried tabbing instead of down
arrowing and I found the buttons I discussed. I tried various things
without having any idea if any would work. This approach
did.

Please provide full links. You can go to the page you are having a problem with, in this case the page where the link is you are trying to follow, copy the address to the clipboard from the address bar, then paste it into the message. That way, people can go to the same page immediately.
The way you are doing it now, people have to verify the address of the site with an Internet search, go to the home page, then look for and go to what they think is the page you are having a problem with.

I'm not giving you a hard time. I'm going to start pointing this out when I see people do this. I hope it will make not just this list more efficient, but any other lists people who see these messages are on less cluttered as well.
Please don't send thank you messages to everyone who responds. Thank people in advance in the original message with a general statement such as, thanks in advance for any help or thanks in advance for any information. Or, if you wish, if you send a final message saying that the problem has been solved, you can thank people in that message. This is standard e-mail etiquette. If everyone thanked everyone, the list, and any such list, would be unusable. Two thirds of messages would be thank you messages.

Either your mouse pointer is not actually in the right position to activate the link (if you are using right click, this may well be the case), or, as has already been said, the link takes to you to a page, and isn’t actually an mp3 download. Hit enter and see what happens. I personally much prefer the way Firefox handles downloads….
