Re: Firefox ESR

Gene

This isn't just something Mozilla does every now and then.  Extended Support releases may be used by anyone but they are intended for businesses and other institutions that don't want the program to be upgraded frequently.  The extended support release receives all security updates but the program itself doesn't upgrade for one year after release.

The next ESR release will be this summer sometime in June, as I recall.

Because of all the changes being made in firefox now that may impair performance for blind users and interfere with accessibility of some web sites, those who don't want to use the new versions are instructed to use the current ESR version which is version 52 of the program and was released before these changes took place.  Those who want to try the new versions, in particular those who want to try new versions and send feedback regarding problems and progress are encouraged to try the new versions as they are released.

What software does not run in such an environment?

I can only think of machines without a network connection, and that's hardly
useful these days (secure, agreed, but what can they do?).

"ESR" means Extended Support Release.

Every now and then, a Firefox release is labeled as ESR, and it means they
promise to support it for longer than the other in-between releases.

There is no reason to switch from a standard release to an ESR release
unless:

a) you like always running the latest release, and the ESR release is the
latest one

or

b) you are currently running a no-longer-supported release, you don't want
to update to the latest release, but there's an ESR release somewhere in
between which you are happy with.

Basically, do not run unsupported software. If security vulnerabilities
are discovered, you may well run into problems and they will be nobody
else's fault.

So, either run a recent (supported) standard version, or run an ESR version
(which may be older, but has support for longer), but either way, update
before that version becomes unsupported.

The above is true for all software, not just Firefox. Not all projects
have ESR versions, but many do - some are known as LTR - Long Term
Release.

Can you just exclude that from your virus scanner I don't know how to do this so read its manual if it indeed has one, or start in the settings and look for an exclude from scan list.

I don't use Windows 10.  But my impression is that, starting with Windows 7, very few settings need be changed.  I don't recall changing any settings other than show extensions and to use list or details for folders and files.  I don't know if screen-readers do this or if Windows is now smart enough to do this when it sees that a screen-reader is in use, but features that may cause problems such as using certain effects are automatically turned off when a screen-reader is used.  These sorts of things that blind people used to change have been automated and no longer need to be done.  and that has the further advantage that when a blind person unloads a screen-reader, sighted users can see Windows as they are accustomed to.

I don't think that will solve the volume problem.  Why should one voice be at a different volume when the same synthesizer is being used.

I don't have Windows 10 but this command should open Windows volume settings for play.
Hold the Windows key and type r.  Release both keys.  The run dialog will open.
type sndvol and press enter.
Tab around and see if NVDA is listed in the volume settings.  Can you raise it?

When finished, close the utility with alt f4.  There is no ok button.  When you right arrow to raise the volume or left arrow to lower the volume settings take immediate effect.  That allows you to hear the changes as you make them.

It is true that some of the espeak voices sound quieter than others, but this effectively depends on the amount of energy allowed in the particular band in question.
When I wrote quincy, I deliberately made it a little quieter as people complained the original which has a lot of bass, was rattling their laptops!

hi.
do you use espeak bundled with nvda or
do you use espeak sapi5?
if you use espeak of sapi5, it depend on the valume of your choice in
control panel, valume control.
if you use espeak which is installed by default with nvda, i did not
try other synthesizer,
but for me the valume is loud and i select 60 or 70 for its valume.
also, it depend on the voice that you selected.
which variant are you using?

Hi. I am noticing that espeak has quite alower volume than other
system sounds, or listening to a video or anything else, even though
the volume is set at 100% in voice settings. How can I fix?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Good to know the separation and that QB has someone actively interested in accessibility. Are you currently using Quick Books with NVDA and what do you think?
Thanks,

Quicken and Quickbooks are no longer from the same company. Intuit now only sells TurboTax and QuickBokks. They have an accessibility officer Ted Drake who is fairly active on Twitter, but it seems they are more concentrated on improving the blind accessibility of their Web interfaces.

John,
Great question! I have off and on run my own business and for years used
Quicken for what I needed. Then for a time was with an agency and they did
for me what I had done with Quicken.

Went back on my own and decided time to get Quicken again as I had let the
license laps. When I installed the new version, it was a screen reading
nightmare. It was so difficult that I went back to using the APH program,
Money Talks. It is okay, but not what Quicken had done for me in the past. I
am guessing that Quick Books has an interface much like Quicken. I was not
about to do the offered paid upgrade to find that was the case. There have
to be folks other than you and I who would benefit from a good add in.

Hi. A while ago there was a quickbooks addon, but it never seemed to go
anywhere -- I was just wondering if there has been any development over the
last year or two in the addin.

Thanks.
