Hi Quentin
Just tried again today to download the latest snapshot with 16 at the end of it and still getting the same problem wheather you do it from inside of the master snap shot or actually going to the snapshots page and downloading it that way.
If the second way is chosen it does not come up with the error but will let you save it but it never really comes down only part and even when left it dies.
When i went to do it through the master snapshot i get the same message as below.
C:\Users\hurri\AppData\Local\Temp\uRVRN1vw.exe.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.
Try again later, or contact the server administrator.
I then went to the nvaccess website put in my email address to get the 2017.4 release and what do you know I have the 2017.4 fully downloaded to this computer and it starts up.
I also did a reset on the modem to see to see if there were problems there but even after that it still does it. At present i am doing a disk clean up just in case there was a corrupted copy causing it but do not think so.
I just thought i let you know it is still doing it and i guess as long as i can get the next release of nvda when it comes out it is a good thing.
Makes you wonder if it is a geographical thingy with a server?

Most users would use the regular stable release (2017.4 currently), available from the main page.
The "Snapshot" builds are "beta" versions, which are built in between the stable releases, so that anyone interested can test out new features, check whether bug fixes do indeed fix reported bugs (and don't introduce any new ones), etc.
They are available from: https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/snapshots/
The "Next" snapshots are newer, like "alpha" builds and may not necessarily be as stable.
The "Master" snapshots (as mentioned in this thread) are more like "beta" quality - they have features and fixes which have been in Next for a couple of weeks and are hopefully more stable.
While anyone can download them, we do recommend that you keep a stable version of NVDA on hand in case things don't work as planned with the snapshot builds. As for size, they are a similar size to the regular stable release, around 20MB.
If you download and run one, it should work much like the stable version - ie bring up the same dialog offering to install etc.
Kind regards
Quentin.

I wonder failing all of that if there is a keep alive setting in WGet where it will just keep trying and resuming until the download is gotten, or you can try it from a remote box via ssh somewhere and then download it from there later.

Hi Gene
No problems with the internet or going to the snapshots page etc it is say when you go to either update the master snapshot through the help section it goes up to the server and then you press the enter key on the save one to download it it is just not downloading from there server that way and even if you go to the main page where the snapshots are and click on the file to download it you still get the same result. Some of the file might come down maybe 400 k or so some times more but never the whole program.
The anti virus is not stopping it either. I have also tried different browsers still the same result.
It seems to be wanting me to retry the download all the time so is not downloading from the snapshots page but no problems any where else for downloading.

I am also wondering if things have changed like it is a stub then it gets the main file? I am guessing not.
I usually like once a week to see what might of gone into it each week.
Has any one else had the same problems?
This was doing it from inside of the master snapshot under the help section.
I have also tried it from the main page and still got the same results.

I've had a discussion about this matter with you Gene on

Neither the list owner nor I, the moderator, have
said anything about this. Since you may be interested in my opinion, not
as a moderator, but as someone who doesn't like to see blind people needlessly
depriving themselves of a lot of information available to blind people in real
time and with complete independence, I'll give it.
You learn how to do Internet Searches by trial and
error after you know the basic principles. You won't get malware by doing
a search. You may get malware by going to a not trusted site. The
address to the site is given below the link to every result.
If you are downloading something
and you don't know and aren't sure what a trusted site is for the download, then
asking makes sense. Also, free programs increasingly are bundled with
programs people don't want and that may cause problems even if the download
comes from the producer of the program's site. So again, asking makes
sense if you are worried about that. But in an era when Google is used for
an enormous amount of information, a lot of blind people don't use it
much. After centuries of blind people being at a significant
information disadvantage, when sighted people use Google constantly, it's indeed
unfortunate that so many blind people don't do so.
As far as the list is concerned,
there is no list position about people asking questions or using Google. A
list member may express an opinion now and then, but that' is the opinion of the
member.

A Google search for OE Classic identities shows
this article as the first result:
Yes, it has identities. It doesn't say
whether they are available in both the free and paid versions.
See this page, containing a table about
features. You can't read it using table commands but just down arrowing

Identities are only available in the

Re: OEClassic gets an update fixing more accessibility issues
JM Casey <crystallogic@...>
I think you are absolutely spot on with this. I used to get really annoyed when people would respond to a question with “google is your friend” and somesuch, because I thought they were just closing potentially useful discussion in a smart-arsed kind of way. But that was before I joined a lot of “blind tech” type mailing lists. Now, I can’t begin to estimate the number of times I see questions being asked whose answers could be found almost immediately with a simple google search, especially when it comes to step-by-step instructions on how to do something. Not so much on this list, which I don’t always have much to contribute to, but especially on a JAWS list I subscribe to. Whenever I use google, 9 times out of 10, I’d say, I find exactly what I want on the first try. Maybe I just know how to break down a question into its key elements to get meaningful results? Maybe not everyone has this skill. I don’t know. It’s always seemed second-nature to me and I’ve been doing web searches since the days when I used the Internet through telnet and a linux shell in 1996. And it’s mostly gotten better since then, not worse. I know looking at strange websites can sometimes be a pain, but when you see all the stuff you can find out there and how almost any problem you have can be cleared up without the need to call someone in a panic or something, it’ll give you a great sense of independence. For tech-related questions, there are dozens of forums (message boards) out there where people have posted about experiencing every kind of issue you can think of. There’s usually a discussion, and sometimes multiple solutions. You can learn a lot from looking at these forum posts.

Since you may be interested in my opinion, not as a moderator, but as someone who doesn't like to see blind people needlessly depriving themselves of a lot of information available to blind people in real time and with complete independence, I'll give it. You learn how to do Internet Searches by trial and error after you know the basic principles. You won't get malware by doing a search. You may get malware by going to a not trusted site. The address to the site is given below the link to every result. If you are downloading something and you don't know and aren't sure what a trusted site is for the download, then asking makes sense. Also, free programs increasingly are bundled with programs people don't want and that may cause problems even if the download comes from the producer of the program's site. So again, asking makes sense if you are worried about that. But in an era when Google is used for an enormous amount of information, a lot of blind people don't use it much. After centuries of blind people being at a significant information disadvantage, when sighted people use Google constantly, it's indeed unfortunate that so many blind people don't do so. As far as the list is concerned, there is no list position about people asking questions or using Google. A list member may express an opinion now and then, but that' is the opinion of the member. ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Thursday, February 22, 2018 9:50 PM Subject: Re: [nvda] OEClassic gets an update fixing more accessibility issues sara you are a better woman then me. it's hard to Google and not know what exactly one is looking for. I did some web crawling. The pro version has identities, so not sure if that is something you want, but I would comb through all of their news section ( https://www.oeclassic.com/news ) to see what features have been added. The free version is on 27 now. 28, the more accessible version, will be free when the pro version shoots up to 29. I can wait. No big deal for me, but I think it is a one time payment? And you get upgrades for life? I'll have to look at the website again though.

Some other windows have improved recently as well such as message

Since we now have better understanding how to properly adjust

Re: OEClassic gets an update fixing more accessibility issues
For most searches, you don't have to learn signs or worry about using quotes. Many people may be afraid of not being able to do searches well. Google and other popular search engines are consumer services. They have spent years developing systems that make good guesses of what people are looking for when the people, as in most cases, know nothing about searching. State what you are looking for clearly. If you want to find the lyrics to a song, search for A Hard Day's Night lyrics, as an example. If you are looking for a customer service number for a company search for customer service phone number and then write the name of the company. Or write the name of the company and then customer service. Sometimes, changing word order may improve results. Sometimes, changing how you word something may. Experiment.
If you are looking for chocolate cake recipes, search for that, chocolate cake recipes. If you are searching for some specific kind of recipe such as flowerless chocolate cake recipe, search for that. I almost never use any special signs or syntaxes. If I want to find something on youtube such as a song, I type the name of the song and then youtube. If I want to search for best ten Ty restaurants in Chicago, that is what I search for.
If you do searches where you only want to find the exact words you are searching for in that exact order, then put the words in quotes. I almost never do this. If I want to find information about a book, I simply type the name of the book and if I want to find some specific kind of information, like a review, I type the word review after the title. I find reviews in that way and I don't use quotes and I get good results. If one search doesn't work well, try a variation.
First, practice standard searches. If you get good at those, and if they don't meet your needs, you can learn other ways to limit and define searches. But if Google didn't know how to interpret searches from most users, who know nothing about special syntaxes, it wouldn't be used by the large number of people who use it and it wouldn't be used nearly as often by the number of people who use it regularly. And one more important point: You don't have to worry about spelling or whether something is hyphenated or other such things. Google presents results whether you spell something correctly or not, as long as it can recognize the spelling. At times, if I want to know how to spell a name or a word that I don't expect to be in a spell checker, I search for my guess and I usually find the correct spelling in the result links and if I want information about whatever it is, I find relevant results as well.
This is a consumer product. It either works well, given the almost nonexistent knowledge of most consumers about how to search or it fails.
Gene

----- Original Message ----- No we were just trying to save you time. I think one thing I've found is that google likes things in quotes and also like colons if you want to search for more than one thing. otherwise you tend to get scatter gun result. If you pin it down too hard it often fails to find anything at all however. I might also suggest the search engine at startpage.com as its very configurable and allows links to be opened through a proxy if you are a bit suspicious. Note you need to configure it heavily and use the configured page in your bookmarks or it looks far worse than Google result wise. I'd actually like to be able to turn of image results in google as now that people are able to enter descriptions when making blogs and web sites, these have increased to epidemic proportions of late, but often are not of any use to me. As a general role I do my best and google for what I need first. This causes me to learn about operateors etc and I might get information a lot faster than this list, or any other lists. If I cannot find the info I will reference the fact I did google for it and got no results.
Take care

A Google search for OE Classic identities shows this article as the first result: https://www.oeclassic.com/online-help-identities
Yes, it has identities. It doesn't say whether they are available in both the free and paid versions.
See this page, containing a table about features. You can't read it using table commands but just down arrowing through it reads self-explanatory lines and it makes perfect sense and is in logical order. https://www.oeclassic.com/ Identities are only available in the pro version, which you must pay for. Message rules are available in both versions.

The question is, does it have identities in a free or relatively cheap version. This and message rules are the most important things along with read and unread flag reading etc. Brian

I can wait. No big deal for me, but I
think it is a one time payment? And you get upgrades for life? I'll have to
look at the website again though.

Re: Bug in espeak ng used in NVDA Next

You will find I think that most things that say x86, now look at windows 7sp1 as the minimum for being able to run them unless they specifically say it will run on xp. Ccleaner claims to run on xp, but even there i notice its not going to run on amd chips either, only intel ones of recent vintage, say pent 4 and up. This seems to be choices forced on the world by Microsoftscompilers. Brian

There is a table showing minimum version. For Windows it says you need Windows 8. I wasn't 100% sure whether that was if you were compiling it yourself or for the binaries as well, but that could be the reason.
Kind regards
Quentin.

Sorry, that was my misreading re eSpeak-NG versions.
Re eSpeak-ng saying it won't work on Win 32, at a guess you may have downloaded the 64-bit version - on that eSpeak-NG download page: https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng#binaries you can download Windows binaries for 64 or 32-bit.
I'll have a look and see when we plan to update to one of the newer eSpeak-NG builds in next.

Hi Simon,
What version of eSpeak-NG are you using? Looking at: https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/releases indicates that the latest version is 1.49.2, which we updated to prior to NVDA 2017.4.
Having said that, I know there are still issues with eSpeak, some of which are tracked on our issue tracker, and some on eSpeak-NG's here: https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/issues
Kind regards
Quentin.

Hi all,
The currently used espeak ng has a bug in the german language. The bug has been fixed and espeak ng should be updated to latest master. haven't opened a ticket yet because i thought i'll not make to much noise about it. though i can open a ticket as well if the devs prefer that.
Greetings and thanks, Simon
