FW: [win10] Version 1709 and beyond: screen readers must support uIA notification event in order to announce various things from apps
#advisory
Hi all, First, apologies for mentioning competition, but I felt it is best to do so given the overall context. Second, the advisory is deemed major (to severe for some cases) and is applicable for people running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and beyond. The source of this advisory is a Win10 forum hosted on Groups.IO at https://win10.groups.io/g/win10. Thanks.

From: win10@win10.groups.io [mailto:win10@win10.groups.io] On Behalf Of Joseph Lee Sent: Friday, February 23, 2018 9:42 AM To: win10@win10.groups.io Subject: [win10] Version 1709 and beyond: screen readers must support uIA notification event in order to announce various things from apps #ADVISORY #WinTen1709 #WinTen1803 Hi everyone, The following advisory is considered major in that it impacts all known screen readers )except for one or two; feel free to pass this on, although please do cite where you’ve got the advisory from): Problem: notifications from apps such as Calculator, Microsoft Store and others are not announced by screen readers. Background: in Windows 10 Version 1709 and later, if apps are written correctly, they can send notification texts to be announced by screen readers. A UIA client such as a screen reader must be able to catch this in order to announce certain notifications, including Calculator’s display window, app update status in Microsoft Store, various notifications from Edge, Alarms and Clock and other apps. Steps to reproduce: - While using Windows 10 Version 1709 or later (including current Insider Preview builds), launch an app such as Alarms and Clock (be sure it is the latest version).
- In case of Alarms and Clock, go to Stopwatch tab and start and stop the stopwatch.
- For Calculator, do some calculations.
Expected: screen reader announces messages such as “Stopwatch stopped” in Alarms and Clock and “display is something” in Calculator. Actual: only Narrator announces such texts. Cause: other screen readers do not track UIA notification event. This is due to the fact that Version 1709 introduces this event, which requires tracking a newer UIA interface. Known solutions/mitigations/workarounds and impact: - Narrator: green light/okay; works out of the box (requires Version 1709 and later).
- JAWS for Windows: red light/major; no support (version 2018.1802.78 did not solve the Calculator display text problem, for instance).
- NonVisual Desktop Access: yellow light/solution being tested (through an add-on update).
This advisory will be closed once major screen readers (in addition to the three listed above) provides at least a basic solution. Cheers, Joseph

Just above where you can download the Windows binaries on: https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng
There is a table showing minimum version. For Windows it says you need Windows 8. I wasn't 100% sure whether that was if you were compiling it yourself or for the binaries as well, but that could be the reason.

It is probably due to the compiler used to make the executable. Modern versions of Microsoft compilers no longer support xp or vista. They may still work on 32 bit systems running under 7, indeed the espeak build in nvda is a 32 bit build as nvda is 32 bit. I'm guessing you might be using the sapi version of Espeak which will probably be designed to run on modern processors. The question is best asked on their mail list. Brian bglists@... Re: OEClassic gets an update fixing more accessibility issues
This is a very long message, really an essay with a
lot of instructional explanations and examples. But those who are
interested in really using the Internet w3ell will, I hope, read it.
But I'm not talking so much about these sorts of
lists and technical questions. Sighted people constantly use Google.
In the middle of a conversation, if a fact is not known, is disputed or the
person wants more information, if no one knows in the conversation or if it is
disputed, as I said, Someone does a Google search. I'm talking about social
situations where people only have their phones. But it's so engrained to
use Google that if people are at their computers and some sort of similar
situation comes up, why wouldn't they use them? This is so prevalent that
commentators write articles about it. they discuss questions such
as how this has affect3ed conversations and taken the fun out of disputing or
arguing about information.
If you want to know something
about using a computer or something else with adaptive technology, you may get
better answers on specialized lists like this one. But there are all sorts
of areas, you get an error message with a number such as 287 when you try to
send an e-mail or when you try to do something else. Instead of asking a
list is a first resort, write something like the name of the program and the
error message number into a Google search field, do a search, and see what you
get. Don't run any programs any sites offer to solve a problem. Only
do things that people tell you to do on sites like Bleeping Computers if you
think the information is trustworthy. All sorts of sites have good
information but they make their money on offering, as advertising, you a program
to do this or that to solve your problem or to clean your registry or
whatever. You have to learn things about what to do and what not to do and
that is far beyond the perview of this list. But there are other good
blindness-related technical lists where such questions would be welcomed and on
topic. I can give information about two such lists if
desired.
What about other examples?
How many computers can you run
your version of Word on? Search for how many computers can you run Word
2010 on, as an example. I haven't done this but I'm confident that you'll
get lots of relevant results. My hard drive is making a clicking sound
when I first start my computer. What does it mean? A google search
for hard drive clicks during spin up or my hard drive clicks when first started
or some variation will yield lots of relevant results.
For most of my life, I had to
rely on sighted people to get all sorts of information that I might want to know
such as might be in an encyclopedia. All I have to do is do a Google
search for a topic and write the word wikipedia and one of the first results is
almost certain to be a Wikipedia article on the subject. At times, when I
read a difficult piece of literature and I want to know more about it and
understand it better but I don't want to read something as detailed as a book,
if I do a search for something like the name of the book and the word criticism,
I'll often find good information. I have to evaluate the source. Is
it a good source or a questionable source such as something a high school
student posted on line like a term paper he/she did? And even then, if I
read some or all of a questionable source, I may get good information.
I almost never go to a site
where I know I might find something any longer. If I want to find an NVDA
add on, I type something like NVDA and then the name of the add on or if I don't
know it, I might type something like NVDA add on for weather or NVDA weather add
on. I check the address under the link I'm interested in following to make
sure it's the NVDA add ons page. It's so much easier than working with all
sorts of different web pages to just open the Google search edit field in my
browser, do a search and go to the page I want.
And as I've repeatedly
emphasized, Google search is a consumer product. It understands
sentences. If you are more comfortable writing sentences than just a terse
phrase such as New York City population 2018, you can write What is the
population of New York City in 2018. You don't have to use voice
assistants like The Echo to do searches. Why are people so intimidated and
unwilling to do Google searches but not to ask a question of a search
assistant?
The sorts of things I'm
discussing should be an important part of any good Internet training material
for blind people. It isn't. You are taught the mechanics of
searching but nothing or almost nothing of what I've been discussing.

I
think you are absolutely spot on with this. I used to get really annoyed when
people would respond to a question with “google is your friend” and somesuch,
because I thought they were just closing potentially useful discussion in a
smart-arsed kind of way. But that was before I joined a lot of “blind tech” type
mailing lists. Now, I can’t begin to estimate the number of times I see
questions being asked whose answers could be found almost immediately with a
simple google search, especially when it comes to step-by-step instructions on
how to do something. Not so much on this list, which I don’t always have much to
contribute to, but especially on a JAWS list I subscribe to. Whenever I use
google, 9 times out of 10, I’d say, I find exactly what I want on the first try.
Maybe I just know how to break down a question into its key elements to get
meaningful results? Maybe not everyone has this skill. I don’t know. It’s always
seemed second-nature to me and I’ve been doing web searches since the days when
I used the Internet through telnet and a linux shell in 1996. And it’s mostly
gotten better since then, not worse. I know looking at strange websites can
sometimes be a pain, but when you see all the stuff you can find out there and
how almost any problem you have can be cleared up without the need to call
someone in a panic or something, it’ll give you a great sense of
independence.
For
tech-related questions, there are dozens of forums (message boards) out there
where people have posted about experiencing every kind of issue you can think
of. There’s usually a discussion, and sometimes multiple solutions. You can
learn a lot from looking at these forum posts.

Neither the list
owner nor I, the moderator, have said anything about this. Since you may
be interested in my opinion, not as a moderator, but as someone who doesn't like
to see blind people needlessly depriving themselves of a lot of information
available to blind people in real time and with complete independence, I'll give
it.
You learn how to do
Internet Searches by trial and error after you know the basic principles.
You won't get malware by doing a search. You may get malware by going to a
not trusted site. The address to the site is given below the link to every
result.
If you are
downloading something and you don't know and aren't sure what a trusted site is
for the download, then asking makes sense. Also, free programs
increasingly are bundled with programs people don't want and that may cause
problems even if the download comes from the producer of the program's
site. So again, asking makes sense if you are worried about that.
But in an era when Google is used for an enormous amount of information, a lot
of blind people don't use it much. After centuries of blind people
being at a significant information disadvantage, when sighted people use Google
constantly, it's indeed unfortunate that so many blind people don't do so.
As far as the list is
concerned, there is no list position about people asking questions or using
Google. A list member may express an opinion now and then, but that' is
the opinion of the member.

I did some web crawling. The pro

would comb through all of their news section ( https://www.oeclassic.com/news ) to
see what features have been added. The free version is on 27 now. 28, the

I can wait. No big deal for me, but I think it is a one time payment? And
you get upgrades for life? I'll have to look at the website again

Hi Simon,
What version of eSpeak-NG are you using? Looking at: https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/releases indicates that the latest version is 1.49.2, which we updated to prior to NVDA 2017.4.
Having said that, I know there are still issues with eSpeak, some of which are tracked on our issue tracker, and some on eSpeak-NG's here: https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/issues
Kind regards
Quentin.

Re: NVDA keeping Outlook 2007 from closing properly
Sounds like a So, is this an issue with several applications and NVDA? I was switching around browsers and Screen Readers yesterday, and at one point I had a application refuse to continue because Internet Explorer was in the process table, even though there were no IE windows open.
I wonder if perhaps the OLE interfaces in NVDA are not disconnecting from active objects when applications are quitting / shutting down.
Of course if it was an issue like this then restarting NVDA should also clear out any partially closed applications that were awaiting confirmation from NVDA before quitting.
Best Wishes,
Jonathan Cohn

I'll have a look and see when we plan to update to one of the newer eSpeak-NG builds in next.

Re: OEClassic gets an update fixing more accessibility issues
Brian's Mail list account
Hey nobody has said anything against you only just asking that people try to embrace searches. It is quite a high traffic list and as such some people do get a little terse about things being posted over and over. However playing devils advocate with tongue in cheek, one does not have to read every post. Just ignore things that seem vexatious, I do. Its only natural that some people will write in a very direct manner, its not often meant to sound the way we may year it in our minds. chill out, stay around make some message rules and sort the various lists into folders. Wow, I think it's time to move on from a list which a moderator keeps telling people what to do and how to do it. all in the name of making blind people independent and not relying on lists such as this. Thanks for your great enlightening post made my day! Blind people are more cruel to each other then any other disability I have ever had a chance to meet. Gene, instead of explaining your position on every thing people post could you write them privately so y out don't clutter up t he list! If you are owner of the list, please let us know? Did Carlos encourage people to use Google as well? I've had a discussion about this matter with you Gene on another list because it was so simple to get the answer from Google. Neither the list owner nor I, the moderator, have said anything about this. Since you may be interested in my opinion, not as a moderator, but as someone who doesn't like to see blind people needlessly depriving themselves of a lot of information available to blind people in real time and with complete independence, I'll give it.
You learn how to do Internet Searches by trial and error after you know the basic principles. You won't get malware by doing a search. You may get malware by going to a not trusted site. The address to the site is given below the link to every result.
If you are downloading something and you don't know and aren't sure what a trusted site is for the download, then asking makes sense. Also, free programs increasingly are bundled with programs people don't want and that may cause problems even if the download comes from the producer of the program's site. So again, asking makes sense if you are worried about that. But in an era when Google is used for an enormous amount of information, a lot of blind people don't use it much. After centuries of blind people being at a significant information disadvantage, when sighted people use Google constantly, it's indeed unfortunate that so many blind people don't do so.
As far as the list is concerned, there is no list position about people asking questions or using Google. A list member may express an opinion now and then, but that' is the opinion of the member.

A Google search for OE Classic identities shows this article as the first result: https://www.oeclassic.com/online-help-identities
Yes, it has identities. It doesn't say whether they are available in both the free and paid versions.
See this page, containing a table about features. You can't read it using table commands but just down arrowing through it reads self-explanatory lines and it makes perfect sense and is in logical order. https://www.oeclassic.com/ Identities are only available in the pro version, which you must pay for. Message rules are available in both versions.

I did some web crawling. The pro version has identities, so not sure if that is something you want, but I would comb through all of their news section ( https://www.oeclassic.com/news ) to see what features have been added. The free version is on 27 now. 28, the more accessible version, will be free when the pro version shoots up to 29. I can wait. No big deal for me, but I
think it is a one time payment? And you get upgrades for life? I'll have to
look at the website again though.

Re: NVDA or Firefox56 bug?
Brian's Mail list account
Yes the other day the whole of Goldwave still running vanished, though I could still hear the file playing. I puut this down to a windows bug. Its always been there but its very hard to pin down. the only fix quite often is to try to close the computer and then windows spots the invisible software, and asks if you want to wait cole or whatever, sometimes if you select wait it will lwet you see it again, occasionally it won't and then you are stuck, should you shut down and loose the lot? Often there is no choice bt of course many programs, including goldwave will let you pick up the temp file that was saved when you reload the software. Brian

Using latest NVDA with Firefox56, on some sites, like Goodreads, when I either Enter or space on a link to open it, it takes me back to the Desktop or the last program I was on; what's weirder still is that Firefox
remains open within the Alt+tab cycle. Any ideas if this might be a Firefox or NVDA issue?

Hi!
Sure, this works, but it's a bit like shutting down your pc by pulling its power plug. Outlook may have data files open, and force-quitting it like this may leave them in an inconsistent state. What I do is restart NVDA, that also gets rid of the Outlook process. Best, Felix

Hi Quentin
Just tried again today to download the latest snapshot with 16 at the end of it and still getting the same problem wheather you do it from inside of the master snap shot or actually going to the snapshots page and downloading it that way.
If the second way is chosen it does not come up with the error but will let you save it but it never really comes down only part and even when left it dies.
When i went to do it through the master snapshot i get the same message as below.
C:\Users\hurri\AppData\Local\Temp\uRVRN1vw.exe.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.
Try again later, or contact the server administrator.
I then went to the nvaccess website put in my email address to get the 2017.4 release and what do you know I have the 2017.4 fully downloaded to this computer and it starts up.
I also did a reset on the modem to see to see if there were problems there but even after that it still does it. At present i am doing a disk clean up just in case there was a corrupted copy causing it but do not think so.
I just thought i let you know it is still doing it and i guess as long as i can get the next release of nvda when it comes out it is a good thing.
Makes you wonder if it is a geographical thingy with a server?

Most users would use the regular stable release (2017.4 currently), available from the main page.
The "Snapshot" builds are "beta" versions, which are built in between the stable releases, so that anyone interested can test out new features, check whether bug fixes do indeed fix reported bugs (and don't introduce any new ones), etc.
They are available from: https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/snapshots/
The "Next" snapshots are newer, like "alpha" builds and may not necessarily be as stable.
The "Master" snapshots (as mentioned in this thread) are more like "beta" quality - they have features and fixes which have been in Next for a couple of weeks and are hopefully more stable.
While anyone can download them, we do recommend that you keep a stable version of NVDA on hand in case things don't work as planned with the snapshot builds. As for size, they are a similar size to the regular stable release, around 20MB.
If you download and run one, it should work much like the stable version - ie bring up the same dialog offering to install etc.
Kind regards
Quentin.

I wonder failing all of that if there is a keep alive setting in WGet where it will just keep trying and resuming until the download is gotten, or you can try it from a remote box via ssh somewhere and then download it from there later.

C:\Users\hurri\AppData\Local\Temp\1yjDH9cM.exe.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.
Try again later, or contact the server administrator.
Even if it does start downloading it dies shortly after.
It seems to do it in all the browsers not download but other sites will let me download stuff.
It is weird how some can get it and not others.
so am guessing now do i contact nvaccess since it is there server?

Hi Gene
No problems with the internet or going to the snapshots page etc it is say when you go to either update the master snapshot through the help section it goes up to the server and then you press the enter key on the save one to download it it is just not downloading from there server that way and even if you go to the main page where the snapshots are and click on the file to download it you still get the same result. Some of the file might come down maybe 400 k or so some times more but never the whole program.
The anti virus is not stopping it either. I have also tried different browsers still the same result.
It seems to be wanting me to retry the download all the time so is not downloading from the snapshots page but no problems any where else for downloading.

I doubt it. There may some problem in your area or in your part of the country that is interfering with Internet communications between there and the server. there is no reason that different servers would be used.

is the servers playing up? For the last couple of days i have been trying to download a master snapshot and each time it comes down it is only about 540k. Is the server playing up? for when i go to click on it up comes a security smart screen I think it is the windows one.
I am also wondering if things have changed like it is a stub then it gets the main file? I am guessing not.
I usually like once a week to see what might of gone into it each week.
Has any one else had the same problems?
This was doing it from inside of the master snapshot under the help section.
I have also tried it from the main page and still got the same results.
This was again on feb 18th and also tried on the 17th

Wow, I think it's time to move on from a list which a

all in the name of making blind people independent and
not relying on lists such as this.

I've had a discussion about this matter with you Gene on
another list because it was so simple to get the answer from

Please stop sitting on the fence and just tell people not to
post questions on this list.
I certainly will be way more careful.

Neither the list owner nor I, the moderator, have
said anything about this. Since you may be interested in my opinion, not
as a moderator, but as someone who doesn't like to see blind people needlessly
depriving themselves of a lot of information available to blind people in real
time and with complete independence, I'll give it.
You learn how to do Internet Searches by trial and
error after you know the basic principles. You won't get malware by doing
a search. You may get malware by going to a not trusted site. The
address to the site is given below the link to every result.
If you are downloading something
and you don't know and aren't sure what a trusted site is for the download, then
asking makes sense. Also, free programs increasingly are bundled with
programs people don't want and that may cause problems even if the download
comes from the producer of the program's site. So again, asking makes
sense if you are worried about that. But in an era when Google is used for
an enormous amount of information, a lot of blind people don't use it
much. After centuries of blind people being at a significant
information disadvantage, when sighted people use Google constantly, it's indeed
unfortunate that so many blind people don't do so.
As far as the list is concerned,
there is no list position about people asking questions or using Google. A
list member may express an opinion now and then, but that' is the opinion of the
member.

A Google search for OE Classic identities shows
this article as the first result:
Yes, it has identities. It doesn't say
whether they are available in both the free and paid versions.
See this page, containing a table about
features. You can't read it using table commands but just down arrowing

Identities are only available in the
