Hi,
NvDASR: NVDA screen reader, the hashtag for this screen reader on Twitter. We don't use #NVDA hashtag on social media because there is a company called Nvidia.
Cheers,

At any rate, has anyone established a contact with them to get it fixed, if what you wrote is correct, the fix would seem to be pretty simple, especially as its a template for all the items you can play there.

This web site took a <a> tag also known as a link and then declared it a button with text of "Play / Stop" using ARIA ( accessible rich internet application) attributes. They did not however do two essential items when converting one type of HTML to another:

First, Ensure keyboard accessibility. In fact, since the <a> tag does not have a web reference in it, the browser does not see the link as a true link that get keyboard focus. So one cannot hit tab to get to the button and in fact NVDA declares it a non-focusable item.

Second HTML object pretending to be a button, the web developer needs to enable actions when non-mouse actions occur. I expected that when the navigator was on the play/stop button that a nvda-enter command would have caused a mouse click on the location of the navigator cursor, but it does not, so the only way NVDA can activate this button is by moving the mouse to the bbutton with NVDA-numapad-slash followed by a numpad-slash to actually press the left mouse button.

It is quite sad that the developer knew enough accessibility to configure things so a screen reader thinks the graphic with a mouse action is a Play button but then does not go the additional path to adding appropriate handlers so it is can take focus and respond to key actions. Of course if the web developer had just used an HTML <button> tag, then since this is a html type that the browser and screen readers know what to do with, everything would have worked with all disabilities with no additional work. Perhaps they didn't want the buttons to be in the tab sequence.

Re: NVDA 2018.1 released

Yes, searching on google brings up both nvda and nvidia, I guess its so close that the search engine has issues detecting this.

Not that I care to since I have the desktop version and will continue to use it for all time but I can assume that windows store distribution is out and if so what is the scope to do with addons and the like.

Did you try using the tab key wile in browse mode? You can land on the
button that way. NVDA may think the button isn't focusable, but whatever it
means, it doesn't affect whether you can tab to it in browse mode. You can
also use the b command to move to it. You can't tab to it when you are not
in browse mode, so from that standpoint, it isn't focusable. So evidently,
not focusable doesn't apply to browse mode when NVDA is describing an
object.

It is of some importance not to make this appear harder to deal with than it
is. People need to know that, in such situations, and they happen often
enough that this is hardly an isolated instance, people need to know that
they can use browse mode in the usual way except that they have to route the
mouse and left click it while in browse mode to activate the buttton. But
you can get to the button in the usual ways.

I used the browsers developer tools. I basically right clicked on the button
and found the inspect item in the contextual menu. Another useful tool in
seeing what is going on with NVDDA is to use the NVDA-F1 to view the NVDA
Object(s) internals that NVDA uses. That is how I discovered that NVDA did
not think the button was focusable.

even though it's not all that much trouble to get the "button" (in quotes)
to work with NVDA.

This web site took a <a> tag also known as a link and then declared it a
button with text of "Play / Stop" using ARIA ( accessible rich internet
application) attributes. They did not however do two essential items when
converting one type of HTML to another:

First, Ensure keyboard accessibility. In fact, since the <a> tag does
not have a web reference in it, the browser does not see the link as a true
link that get keyboard focus. So one cannot hit tab to get to the button and
in fact NVDA declares it a non-focusable item.

Second HTML object pretending to be a button, the web developer needs to
enable actions when non-mouse actions occur. I expected that when the
navigator was on the play/stop button that a nvda-enter command would have
caused a mouse click on the location of the navigator cursor, but it does
not, so the only way NVDA can activate this button is by moving the mouse to
the bbutton with NVDA-numapad-slash followed by a numpad-slash to actually
press the left mouse button.

It is quite sad that the developer knew enough accessibility to
configure things so a screen reader thinks the graphic with a mouse action
is a Play button but then does not go the additional path to adding
appropriate handlers so it is can take focus and respond to key actions. Of
course if the web developer had just used an HTML <button> tag, then since
this is a html type that the browser and screen readers know what to do
with, everything would have worked with all disabilities with no additional
work. Perhaps they didn't want the buttons to be in the tab sequence.

Windows 10 App Essentials 18.03.2 emergency patch #addonrelease

Hi all,

For those using NVDA 2017.4: a really critical issue was found that prevents the add-on from working in the first place. Version 18.03.2 resolves this, but because add-on update feature won’t work, you need to install this version manually:

https://github.com/josephsl/wintenApps/releases/download/18.03/wintenApps-18.03.2.nvda-addon

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Cheers,

Here is a correction.  I just checked and my recollection was incorrect.  You can't tab to the button in browse mode.  However, you can move to the button with the b command and with the arrow keys.  It is of some importance for people to know this so they understand that you can still get to buttons conveniently, in such cases,  if you know quick navigation commands.

Did you try using the tab key wile in browse mode?  You can land on the button that way.  NVDA may think the button isn't focusable, but whatever it means, it doesn't affect whether you can tab to it in browse mode.  You can also use the b command to move to it.  You can't tab to it when you are not in browse mode, so from that standpoint, it isn't focusable.  So evidently, not focusable doesn't apply to browse mode when NVDA is describing an object.

It is of some importance not to make this appear harder to deal with than it is.  People need to know that, in such situations, and they happen often enough that this is hardly an isolated instance, people need to know that they can use browse mode in the usual way except that they have to route the mouse and left click it while in browse mode to activate the buttton.  But you can get to the button in the usual ways.
