Re: Adware / Malware removers that are accessible with NVDA

Giles Turnbull

Hi Brian,

I'm using Firefox latest version 59. and no, there is no way to access any settings when the malware was playing. It plays continuously on a loop and you cannot close the page, cannot shut down Firefox and cannot access the settings! The only way to close down Firefox while the malware is running is to use Program Manager and find Firefox in the list of running applications and choose End Task from there.

I have actually managed to remove this malware by totally uninstalling Firefox from Add and Remove Programs in Control Pannel and then downloading the Firefox installer again using Internet Explorer. I have also installed Malaware free trial version and that did pick some unwanted malwares up and remove them, so any traces have hopefully been cleaned :)

Here we go again. If you can, get hold of the latest next snap and run it as a portable. See if things work in that after a system restart. There is also a tool in there for fixing these sort of things, but as you say it may well need sight to invoke it to start with. Preferably do not install this version use it portably, but turn uac down.

Hi all,

I encounter a very strange problem on a machine where all used to work fine.

It runs Windows 10 latest update and NVDA 2018.1.

In Mozilla apps, (thunderbird, Firefox) any object is announced as
"unknown".

More generally, in any app, conext menus are nomore spoken.

I triend to uninstall and reinstall NVDA, even deleting the NVDA
configuration directory, but it definitely does not work.

Has anyone encountered this and know how to fix it ?

It is very easy to import bookmarks from Firefox into Waterfox. Install it, and it gives you options from which to import from.

Re: IRC, instructions on how to use, and NVDA accessibility

JM Casey <crystallogic@...>

Hi.

I used to use IRC a lot, and still do occasionally. As I’m a new-ish user of nVDA though, I haven’t yet tried it with this screen-reader. You can download the client MIRC for Windows. It works fairly well with JAWWS, and because I haven’t used any specific scripts for it or anything, I’m guessing it will work with NVDA as well. I have yet to try it, like I said; MIRC is finally for the first time demanding that I  register and buy the product (after eighteen + years of ignoring the message to register .. no kidding) I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

The help system in MIRC is quite good. You can do all commands from the keyboard with the / prefix. Channels and private chat and file transfers all have their own  windows in the program, which you can access from the keyboard. In channels where there is a lot of traffic, you might have trouble keeping up as text scrolls on the screen really quickly. You can set things like audio alerts to announce events within the program. All in all, although I’m not the IRC user I once was (mostly because my favourite haunts largely went silent), it’s still my favourite method of internet chat, and of course you can use it for other things as well.

Hi. I came across this very interesting vedio on YOUTUBe. Just as Apple and Google have made their operating systems free on their devices, so does Microsoft intend to do the same, though it was relatively slow to catch up with it's two rivals. Of course, Google and Apple profit by other means, so will Microsoft. Also, From this video, Windows will soon concentrate on a feature known as Virtual reality. How far it will affect Accessibility, I leave you to judge for yourselves. Here is the video link.

Re: Problem with old versions of Portable firefox

Gene

If that happened to me, I would have tried two possible options:
First, get a sighted person to turn accessibility features on in the new version.  They can be turned on and off.  As far as I know, in older versions, before 57.x, there was no user option to do so.  I don't know about a possible option in about:config.  Making this change may have allowed other versions to work correctly.

the other thing I would have tried, if I didn't want to get sighted help or it wasn't conveniently available, is system restore, one of the most underused tools for correcting odd, unforeseen problems for which a good alternative possible fix is not known or available.

Thanks but even the ESR Portable version is now warning that Accessibility Features have been disabled wen I install it.

I understand the question somebody else posted last week about how could portable apps could now be made accessible.

It does look like Mozilla has pulled accessibility support on all it current portable downloads.

After installation I can access the menus and have been through all the options but can find no way to make even this ESR version accessible.

I can open a web page such as www.bbc.co.uk  using control L and the title of the window will say BBC home but there is no way to ;read any of the content in the resulting page or navigate using tab, or element shortcuts H for heading etc.

I got similarly zero feedback when I opened www.google.co.uk.

Firefox ESR and NVDA announces Google home but it is impossible to navigate to or read any of the web page or edit fields with NVDA.

NVDA does not even recognise the BBC Home page as a web page in this ESR portable version , if I try insert F7 for Elements list all that comes up is a message from Firefox asking me if I want caret browsing enabled.

For reference NVDA is still working normally with installed versions  of Waterfox and Chrome and Edge and even Internet Explorer.

I am on Windows 10 latest release and NVDA 2018.1

Following suggestions on this list to use portable versions of Firefox, potentially with Webvisum, I downloaded and installed first of all the portable versions of Firefox 52 and then Firefox 51.

It was surprising that even for Portable versions there was an installation process though the result  was a  folder labelled Firefox Portable with a portable executable in it.

I was more surprised after both installs that a message came up saying that accessibility features had been disable , despite these being older versions  of Firefox.

Sure enough  after running the programs I found these installs unusable both with NVDA and Jaws 2018.

I downloaded these portable versions of Firefox from the Mozilla site but it appears that they are not genuine older versions as they all appear to have the accessibility problem.

Is there an alternative source of portable versions  that are accessible?
