Lino, Just now picking up on this thread, so if suggestions here have be put forward, apologies.
Do you have access to an Apple phone or tablet? For a long time, I felt as you do. Synthesizer reading was always my last choice. For years now, I have used Voice Dream Reader and my go to voice is James. The quality of his reading is exceptional. The number and range of recorded books will always be limited as quality recording takes far more time than the listening length of a book and therefore is costly. Book share’s collection is now up over half a million books and growing all the time. I am no longer a student so cannot access Bookshare for free,. However $50 per year gives me access to the entire library. More and more often I hear a review of a book that has just been published in print, and when I check at Bookshare, it is already there. I like the features that let me bookmark passages, highlight text, and copy it if I want and even add my own annotation.
I pushed myself to learn to read synthesizer read books when I discovered James. I picked a book that I had longed to read but for which there was no recorded copy. Half way through that book, it just didn’t matter at all that I was not hearing a human reader. I still read many recorded books, but the digital option has opened a whole new library.

Also, I often prefer hearing an efficient synthesizer such as Eloquence or Via Voice or Dectalk when listening to a book. When I'm using a computer or a device like a note taker or tablet, I can check how anything is spelled, I can very easily copy and paste if I want or need to take notes, andI can listen more quickly.

My point here is, until recently, I could read things with Espeak NG, including stories and Tumblr text posts, without any issues. Some of the changes made to Espeak NG were minor and not unpleasant to my ears. It's only the recent slurring and weird pronunciations
of words like "resignedly" that make me twitch whenever they come up and jar me out of my immersion. Espeak never used to do this. I've been using it more or less constantly for
six years. Is it really too much to ask that it not be ruined when it was doing just fine two NVDA releases ago?

You may have to turn off browse mode to have it
update on some sites. I seem to vaguely remember that it updates with
browse mode on on my machines but I never paid much attention to that. But
tabbing away and then returning causes the page to be reloaded into the browse
mode display. Turning off and on browse mode would probably cause the same
thing to happen.

Ok, I would take the long cable and go to Best Buy, Micro Center or any other company that sells computers, probably even a good office supply may have the right cable. Let them know that you want a good quality cable instead of the cheapest thing they have on the shelf and they should be able to supply you with a cable that will work and not go bad on you in a day or two as long as you take good care of the cable. One thing I usually suggest to people is that it is smarter to get a 10 foot cable because a 6 foot cable may be long enough, but it is probably going to be more likely to be stretched more from time to time and more likely to break sooner because of the extra stretching of the cable than would happen with a 10 foot cable.

A Focus 40 Blue. I don't know how to get Bluetooth working for it, though. It came with two cables, a short one and a long one. I used the long one so I could sit back with it on my lap, but then it started dropping out if I didn't use one hand to hold the plugin place, and by then I'd mislaid the shorter cable. My sister found something else with plugs that fit at both ends, but the cord was too thin to handle the information and would only work for about two seconds before dropping out again. I don't know where to buy a sufficiently durable cable for this display, and thought I'd have to go through the company directly, as the manual said.

Gene New Zealand <hurrikennyandopo@...>
Hi
From what i see the skype app works well but only been using it more for voice calls. it lets you navigate the app etc and I guess the rest of the features would work well to.
if you are interested I put together a tutorial on using it the basics and now i know when a person is online to be added some time this week to it it makes it even better just knowing when your friends are online. The last part knowing when they are online will be added some time this week. it can be found on the nvda tutorials for other programs page on my website where a link is below.

them discussing pull requests and whatnot, but can make neither head nor tail of what they are talking about in such messages. I thought that between them and the NVDA dev team, they'd have fixed this issue in the three months between version releases. I was obviously presumptuous on that score.

So, what kind of Braille display do you have? And what kind of cord are you having a problem with?
Just perhaps a replacement cord isn’t nearly as expensive as you believe it will be at all. Most of the cords on mose Braille displays these days are one or another kind of a USB cable and can be gotten rather cheaply from any number of sources including Best Buy.

My name is Sharni, S-h-a-r-n-i. And I bought a Braille Display a couple years back. Waste of money. The cable started acting up when I'd barely used it and I don't know where to buy a new one, and it probably costs another couple hundred dollars because that's how blind tech companies work when they want to make a profit. Besides, my arms would get tired after reading like that for a while, and having to scroll manually takes all the joy out of reading. Get over your narrow-minded self.

Gee, I never thought of that! Are all my favourite fanfictions audiobooks? Are all the smalltime authors whose books I read now able to afford to make their works audiobooks? Are Tumblr writers who have created fictional works on the spur of the moment able
to access such resources now? Can I, an as-yet unpublished author, miraculously turn my shoddy early drafts into pleasant-to-hear audiobooks?
No? Didn't think so. Also audiobooks are stupidly expensive and sometimes the narration leaves much to be desired. Espeak was doing just fine before. I could use my imagination to do the work it couldn't, and maxed inflection made that easier. Sure, if I
was using a sapi voice, or Vocaliser, I'd fall asleep fast, because there's. No. Inflection. In. Those. Voices. So. They. Sound. Really. Dull. And. Uninterested.

I've been messing around with both open and libre offices writers for about 1 year and a half or so, and found keyboard shortcut lists for both. I also found the keyboard shortcuts for open office calc. If you want I can send you those. I'm not sure
if there is an email list, for blind users of these programs though. I haven't seen anything come across the boards about one. It would be interesting to know if such list are out there.

Hi Sharni,

I have been meticulously perusing and consuming large portions of text these last couple months for my examinations, which, fortunately and finally, end on Wednesday. In this process, I must confess that I too have noticed some fairly simple and uncomplicated and commonplace words being mispronounced. As my objective was to prepare for my examinations, I ignored and overlooked the mispronunciations, but did feel surprised every now and then at the things I observed newly broken. While I canot claim to be frustrated beyond further endurance, far from that stage at the moment, I certainly get where you are coming from. I suppose the best thing for us to do is to post all these concerns of ours to the ESpeak-NG mailing list itself, so that Reece and others are made cognizant of user feedback. This will undoubtedly require patience and persistence, but seems to me the most proper and promising course of action. I shall join anyone who choose to pursue this endeavour post-March 28... Thanks.

Hi,

There are many apps that are accessible with NVDA. These include most recent update to Twitter, Sa11ytaire (accessible and testing version of Solitaire optimized for users with disabilities) and many others. And before anyone adds what I think they'll say, yes, I do recommend getting that ad-on (not only because I wrote it, but because it comes in handy in interesting situations such as supporting universal app controls NVDA doesn't support yet). Cheers, Joseph

Youtube player and elapsed time not properly being displayed
Hello folks. Here is the issue, as best I can explain it.
When I open any video in YouTube, be it Firefox or Waterfox, it does not update the elapsed time of the video until I pause the video. Also, if I tab or control+tab away, it might update. Any reason why this is happening? It isn't a show stopper, but, it is annoying. I cannot say for sure if this happens in chrome or Edge, or Internet Explorer. This seems to be an issue that spans different versions of the browsers mentioned and the version of NVDA as well.
