Important: NVDA 2018.1.1 is for Windows 10 only

Hi everyone,

For the below notice, it should be treated as coming from a Windows Insider and an NVDA developer. Due to massive confusion surrounding cases of inability to obtain NVDA 2018.1.1 on some systems, I’d like to clarify a few things regarding this matter. As it affects everyone, please read this message to the end (and please do share this far and wide):

In March 2018, as part of Windows 10 Version 1803 development, Microsoft made a change to Windows OneCore speech synthesizer. Specifically, the sample rate of this synthesizer was lowered from 22.05 KHz to 16 KHz, causing I and other Insiders to perceive the voice as having funny pitch issues. According to Microsoft (as noted by NV Access), this change was intentional, and was subsequently pushed to Insiders running post-1803 builds as well.

Because of high impact of this change, I requested that NVDA 2018.1.1 be released for those upgrading to Windows 10 Version 1803. NV Access staff and several Insiders agreed, hence the point release. However, because it only affects Windows 10 (first of all, OneCore voices are only available on Windows 10, and since this is a late change for 1803 customers), 2018.1.1 (stable release) will show up on Windows 10 only (including build 17133, the RTM build for 1803). For those using master or next snapshots are already running 2018.1.1 code (in fact, both branches are running 2018.2 development code with varying levels of testing done on features), and 2018.2 stable (late May 2018 at the earliest) will include 2018.1.1 code.

Technical: previously, OneCore synthesizer support module had a hard-coded value for sample rate (22050 hertz), which caused problems when sample rate was changed. Now it’ll consult internal wave player headers to determine which sample rate to use to play OneCore speech waves.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hello,

I am having an issue with NVDA not reading what is on my screen. It will be working normally, and then randomly will only announce key presses instead of whatever the focus item is. Is anyone else having this issue, or have any idea on what may be causing this?

Thanks for the help!

Hi,

And it was posted on the Win10 forum. More details on a separate post.

Hello all,

Actually, NVDA 2018.1.1 final was released a few days ago. But since the bug fixed in it for the Windows 10 OneCore voices affects only Windows 10, NV Access decided to push this update through the automatic update system only for Windows 10 users. So, users of Windows 8.1, 8 and 7 will not get an update notification for NVDA 2018.1.1. That is the whole story (smile). I don't know why there was no message about this in the NVDA mailing lists, but the information mentioned above was posted by NV Access at least on Twitter.

I just booted up my other laptop which i haven’t used for some time and the first thing i got was a update to nvda 18.1.1

And joseph did make a announcement for this release but probably went under the radar for most i guess as it mostly refers to the spring release of win10

Sorry but I have always obtained my updates over the update function and that function still says NVDA 2018.1 is the latest version. I have checked again one minute ago.

I have no firewall or other security system preventing it to download.

Indeed I have checked the website and the version has come out you were right but is not implemented in the nvda update function under the help menu.

Hi,

Yes, this is exactly it.

People really do need to pay attention to what exactly is being fixed and actually check the website before simply saying it is not out yet.

It was clearly stated several times on this list the fixes only applied to windows 10 users, so windows 10 users are the only ones that would get the update through the help menu.

Right, there seems to be an issue with 2018.1, in that at least for me, it will not see there is an update at all. However, I have a machine here with 2017.3 on it and it spotted the new version straight away. However I've not manually updated the working version on this machine in case anyone wants me to do any more diagnostics.
Firstly, can everyone who has managed to get the update automatically tell us if they updated ..
From an installed version of18.1 or a portable
b. Windows 10 or windows 7

If everyone who cannot get it was on windows 7, then we would know it was a problem of that version of windows.

As I say, neither an installed or portable version on windows 7 could be induced to see the update for me, but 2017.3 actually did see it. Not tried 2017.4, as I have no machine here running that version at the time.

Over to you. If there is an issue, we should raise an issue on github, but if it can be explained by, say an add on then that is OK. The only thing I can think of is that 10 users have that extra add on from Joseph, whereas 7 users will not.

Re: accessible screen recorder?

Perry Simm

Hello,
if the problem is just recording your mic and the computer's audio output to the same audio file, a combination of Virtual Audio Cable and Audacity will do the trick. Combined with capturing the screen using a different tool, you would be all set.
Virtual Audio Cable creates pairs of virtual audio devices. Each pair contains a playback device and a recording device, and they are connected such that whatever you play on the former can be recorded on the latter. In addition, the software contains a repeater app which can record on one sound device and route the recorded data to a playback device.

Subject: [nvda] accessible screen recorder?

I'm looking for a screen recorder that can capture sound card audio as well. Open source would be the best, but as long as it works with NVDA I am willing to shell out a few bucks. I tried Cam Studio in the portable apps suit but it could not capture sound card audio at the same time as capturing Microphone audio. Any suggestions?

Re: 2018.1.1 out yet?

Brian's Mail list account

Re: getting the professional version of station playlist studio registered

Roger Stewart

There is no free version of SPL but you can get a trial version that nags you to register every 5 minutes or so so you can find out how it works and if you like it.  There is a basic and pro version and the pro version costs more of course.

Hi,
Wait, before we continue with this: are you a broadcaster intending to use SPL Studio, or did you buy it because people told you about it? If you are NOT a broadcaster, then please contact StationPlaylist developer (Ross Levis, who is not a member of this list)for chance for a refund, because SPL Studio Pro costs 250 dollars or so. If however, you are indeed a broadcaster, then you need to put in the station name in a plain text format.
An important reminder: just because I or other add-on authors are asking for feedback should not be a reason to purchase expensive software unless you really have to. This is why I did say in the original message I sent a few days ago that I'm seeking feedback from SPL users. At this point, I'm half-tempted to never again ask for feedback on the SPL add-on from this list because someone might purchase an expensive software without being educated as to what it is and its purpose, or for that matter, if one is actually not broadcasting or plan not to use this software as a broadcaster. But given that we have broadcasters on this list who do use this software and the add-on for it, and because not all of them are part of the NVDA-SPL list, I'll ask for wider feedback from time to time but with an important change: I will accept feedback only from broadcasters and other users who are actual users of StationPlaylist Studio, or is interested in using it for broadcasting purposes.
For future reference, the subscription info for NVDA-SPL list is:
nvda-spl+subscribe@nvda-spl.groups.io
Another thing to note: StationPlaylist Studio add-on follows continuous delivery model - same principle as Windows 10 App Essentials add-on. As such, you'll see tons of messages about snapshots (two snapshot levels) on the NVDA-SPL list. Most snapshots are stable, but occasionally an alpha-level build may not work all the way or is filled with experimental features.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi folks,

I purchased station playlist studio and I can't seem to get it registered I know that you type in the serial number, and the 20 digit code, but I have having trouble with the station name. No matter what i type in there I get an error something about an invalid value and to press escape to which sends me back to the registration screen from that point that invalid value error message comes up every time I tab around the screen.   .What should the proper syntax be for the station name? Hopefully one of you listers can help me sort this out.  Tony

Re: 2018.1.1 out yet?

It is a fix for windows 10 1803 users

So if you are planning on updating to this version of windows then you should update nvda 18.1.1

Or forever be silent 😃

The fact is that i have 2018.1, and have forced it to look for updates this

morning and its saying no update available, so how do you explain this? Its

no personal slight, its the fact that obviously something is screwy here.

Could it be that its only offering the update to the users running windows

10?

Seems a little odd as windows 7 does not have these voices so it would make

no difference one way or the other!

Maybe some of us are in a parralell universe? :-)

Actually there is a post by joseph

But unless you are using or planning to update win10 1803 then it wont affect you

So it looks like no one takes any notice  😃

And the actual fact is, nobody has posted anything here even about the rc

being around as far as I can tell.

its not really sufficient to post anything to the web site without adding

something to the user list so people are alerted. The old catch 22, if you

are not aware an update is planned, you do not know to go look for it, and

you don't know because most users with the release version are not going to

get any indication that the RC2 is out are they?

Seems sensible to me that an autoposter as we used to see in the old days

of Usenet might be a good thing for nvaccess to invoke any time they want to

alert the users of this list to a new test version that has just the

changes mentioned in the in process article, ie the fix for the sample rate

change in windows 10.

is it just me that sees the logic in this?

Re: getting the professional version of station playlist studio registered

Tony Ballou

Hi,

You can get a demo version that works for 3 weeks, then you can choose
the standard version which is what I have, and there's a professional
version for full time broadcasters.

Hi,
Wait, before we continue with this: are you a broadcaster intending to
use SPL Studio, or did you buy it because people told you about it? If
you are NOT a broadcaster, then please contact StationPlaylist
developer (Ross Levis, who is not a member of this list)for chance for
a refund, because SPL Studio Pro costs 250 dollars or so. If however,
you are indeed a broadcaster, then you need to put in the station name
in a plain text format.
An important reminder: just because I or other add-on authors are
asking for feedback should not be a reason to purchase expensive
software unless you really have to. This is why I did say in the
original message I sent a few days ago that I'm seeking feedback from
SPL users. At this point, I'm half-tempted to never again ask for
feedback on the SPL add-on from this list because someone might
purchase an expensive software without being educated as to what it is
and its purpose, or for that matter, if one is actually not
broadcasting or plan not to use this software as a broadcaster. But
given that we have broadcasters on this list who do use this software
and the add-on for it, and because not all of them are part of the
NVDA-SPL list, I'll ask for wider feedback from time to time but with
an important change: I will accept feedback only from broadcasters and
other users who are actual users of StationPlaylist Studio, or is
interested in using it for broadcasting purposes.
For future reference, the subscription info for NVDA-SPL list is:
nvda-spl+subscribe@nvda-spl.groups.io
Another thing to note: StationPlaylist Studio add-on follows
continuous delivery model - same principle as Windows 10 App
Essentials add-on. As such, you'll see tons of messages about
snapshots (two snapshot levels) on the NVDA-SPL list. Most snapshots
are stable, but occasionally an alpha-level build may not work all the
way or is filled with experimental features.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi folks,

I purchased station playlist studio and I can't seem to get it
registered I know that you type in the serial number, and the 20 digit
code, but I have having trouble with the station name. No matter what
i type in there I get an error something about an invalid value and to
press escape to which sends me back to the registration screen from
that point that invalid value error message comes up every time I tab
around the screen.   .What should the proper syntax be for the station
name? Hopefully one of you listers can help me sort this out.  Tony

ok I’m not doubting your install of nvda cant find any update

But that doesn’t mean their isn’t one

I just booted up my other laptop which i haven’t used for some time and the first thing i got was a update to nvda 18.1.1

And joseph did make a announcement for this release but probably went under the radar for most i guess as it mostly refers to the spring release of win10

Chris

Sorry but I have always obtained my updates over the update function and that function still says NVDA 2018.1 is the latest version. I have checked again one minute ago.

I have no firewall or other security system preventing it to download.

Indeed I have checked the website and the version has come out you were right but is not implemented in the nvda update function under the help menu.

Regards

Davy
