That is a shame, another inaccessible music service the blind can't use.

Move to your main drive and press alt + enter.

Control + tab to tools.

Tab down to drive check.

Make sure both items are checked and space bar on start or okay.

It will only check the drive after you restart, and it will take longer than usual to restart, because it will be checking the drive.

It sounds more like an operating system problem, and not NVDA.
I would recommend unloading NVDA and load Narrator and see if it still happens.
If it only happens with NVDA, you could reinstall it.
If it does not happen with Narrator, I would try a chkdsk in tools of the drive properties.

Hi guys,
My NVDA is having a strange and very annoying problem.
It happens that when I stay too much time far from my computer, when I come back my screen is totally frozen and there's nothing I can do about. Mouse and keyboard aparently don't receive my commands, my computer just stays there, out of any action.
The only thing I can do, obviously, is to manually restart it and then all seems to back to normality.
How I can resolve this problem? I'll really appreciate if there's a solution for my cyber nightmare haha

NVDA 2018.1 freezes when editing an Excel worksheet

Suzy

hello,

My name is Suzy, and this is my first post. Since updating to 2018.1, NVDA has not worked well with Excel 2016. It runs smoothly for a while. Then it FREEZES. The trigger seems to be editing text in a cell. (Note: The freeze may happen right away or after several minutes of work.)

The scenario is as follows:

Open an existing workbook. (It can be large or small, and it can be an xlsx file or a csv file.)

Begin navigating through a sheet and editing cells. The text can be  changed by overwriting the text in the cell, using F2, or deleting the existing text before entering new information.)

Press Enter, Tab or Down Arrow to leav the newly edited cell; NVDA will not speak the text. Furthermore, NVDA refuses to speak at all for some time.

Standard Windows commands will continue to work as expected, so the workbook can be saved and closed. (Note: Sometimes Excel will not close completely.)

If the PC is left alone for a few moments, NVDA recovers on its own. Frequently, I've resorted to restarting the computer.

This problem is quite annoying. I have multiple workbooks, and I am teaching myself how to use the sumproduct formula. I cannot trust NVDA in its current state.

Below are some additional notes.

My PC is a Lenovo Yoga with an I5 processor and 8 gigs of ram.

Windows 10 and Office 365 are up-to-date.

Sometimes I have a Baum VU20 attached via USB. This is especially true, when I am working with formulas In Excel. The freeze also occurs, if braille entry is being used.

NVDA 2018.1 was initially installed using the standard update process. After discovering the issue, I uninstalled NVDA and reinstalled it.

I have also tried to work around the freeze by switching from sapi5 voices to One Core voices. I don’t know if this was worth the trouble, since I’m using David either way. I didn’t know about One Core voices until late last week.

I have an edited log, but it is quite lengthy. I left all the initializing NVDA information, and all of the information concerning Excel, since there appears to be numerous errors prior to the freeze.

I am not new to NVDA, but I am new to this list. I need some instruction as to what to do now.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Suzy

It looks like it is happening because of a UIA error.

The program does work in Windows 10.  People have been installing it on Windows 10 as a new installation.

If support stops for a version of a program that runs in a certain version of Windows,, it will run in that version.  Also, a large number of programs run in Windows 10 that rran in earlier versions of Windows and that haven't been supported for a long time.

Does NVDA support edit controls TRichView and TRichViewEdit

Jim Bretti <jim@...>

We have an application written in Delphi that uses TRichViewEdit controls, and NVDA does not seem to recognize the control.  If I load text into the control and place my cursor at the top, NVDA speaks the text 'blank' as I arrow down the page.

I'm trying to understand if NVDA does not recognize the control or if is a problem in the TRichView component.

Thanks

There is a usable version, but it seems to me that the later versions weren’t like the older versions, and I did not like it.

One of the cool things about Eudora is how it kept attachments in a folder outside of the eMail program.

Does anyone use Eudora anymore?  I learned it back in 97 when I first started teaching at the deaf-blind center.  I installed it on my win7 machine and it worked for a while.  Maybe I'll try it on my win10 machine.  However, I get scared that big brother will blow it away like he did my outlook express.  Anything he doesn't like, ya know.

Having followed this thread, I note that Microsoft stopped supporting Live mail in January 2016, it seems that, if the program was already installed on a Windows ten machine, it may still work, however, people may be dissapointed if they try installing it on Windows ten now and Windowsd updates may stop it in the future, who knows?.

We have to accept that Live mail is now outdated, I still use a ribbon version on a Windows seven computer, but it is getting slower as time goes by. For Windows ten I use the Mail app sometimes, but Thunderbird works fine, although I don’t reallyu like it,mainly because it means learning new stuff, but, once you get used to it, it’s tolerable. You can set it up to do all you want with different accounts etc.

Windows 10 App Essentials 18.04.2 released #addonrelease

Hi everyone,

Windows 10 App Essentials 18.04.2 is now available:

https://github.com/josephsl/wintenapps/releases/tag/18.04.2

Highlights include foundations to support Sets in Redstone 5 builds, and resolving an annoying issue where NVDA would announce “unknown” when pressing Windows+X to open quick link menu. As always, the new release is just an update check away.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: Blindspot may need to close because of Spotify's changing API.

Hi,
To be honest, I never saw the charm in subscription-based streaming. I use 7Digital. Mostly, I download. If I'm going out and don't want to lug my external harddrive around, I'll stream through Sonos. You pay once, then the content's yours and it appears in your library, and you can mix and match it in playlists and all sorts. There is also a 7Digital app, not sure how accessible that is though, never had any reason to try it. But 7Digital seems to be a rather small company, and I had several teleconferences with their web developers back in 2015 regarding accessibility improvements, so can safely say that they definitely care.
Cheers.
Damien.

Hello,
as far as an accessible web interface is concerned, I can recommend Google Play Music. It uses headings, has keyboard shortcuts, all buttons have reasonable descriptions, and if used with Chrome it doesn't even require the security risk called Flash. It's an accessibility success story too few people know about, in sharp contrast to Spotify which, in my opinion, never really cared.

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Well no I don't, but I will comment that this aspect for any software with many different writers is par for the course, even back in the olden days when I was young!
No matter how apparently tight syntax is, you often get somebody reinventing the wheel, either because they do not understand how the existing wheel is supposed to work or they do not know it exists or can be adapted to roll their way without breaking something.
In commercial projects somebody keep this under review constantly before it starts to grow too complicated and hard to understand. However when working as NVAccess do, this is often beyond resources, and has, in the past led to break up of projects, spin offs etc etc.
That in this case would be a bad thing to happen.
I agree that something needs to be done, and I also assume there are no tools around that can follow the twists and turns of such complex code through runtimes and libraries written in other languages and already compiled, in order to show the dodgy parts.

Subject: RFC: source code maintenance concerns and others

Hi all,

After reading a conversation on Gitter where Doug Lee pointed out a function
in winUser module that was broken (confirmed by Jamie), and after going
through other modules in NVDA source code (both Python and C++ files), I
figured it is time to bring other source code maintenance concerns to the
wider community (wider than the NVDA community, in fact). Some of these
include white space inconsistencies, duplicate classes, inconsistent
copyright headers, import concerns (especially _winreg versus winreg and
others) and so on.

To gather comments from not just NVDA community, but from outside as well, a
meta-issue has been created to go over some of these concerns:

https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/8139

An important request: you should comment on this issue or offer to assist in
this matter if and only if you satisfy ALL of the requirements below:

1. Understand what a screen reader is from a technical level or at a
competent level where you can explain how it works to different audiences.
2. You have contributed NVDA source code edits at least once, or
reviewed the source code for research purposes. This excludes documentation
edits, translations, website contributions and other things outside of NVDA
Core source code changes.
3. You have genuine concerns about the state of the NVDA Core source
code.
4. You are willing to research and improve the source code to address
various concerns or raise issues not raised on the issue linked above.
5. You are willing to reach out to people outside of NVDA community
(computer science professors, researchers, students, Python experts,
software development gurus and others, both sighted and blind) in hopes of
recruiting them to help us with this work.
6. Skilled in at least two programming languages (C++ and Python
preferred).
7. Be an effective communicator as this project will involve a lot of
contributors.

Those in the NVDA community must meet ALL requirements above. Those outside
the community who are willing to help out and lend their
expertise/advice/funding/recruitment skills should satisfy at least
requirements 3, 4, 5, and 6. Also, outside folks who have knowledge of or
have experience in principles and practices of software development
(especially maintaining a large software system) are more than welcome to
join this effort.

As for what I will do: as the initiator of this proposal, I will reach out
to several software engineers who might show interest in this effort.
Although I might not be able to lead this effort up front (due to other
commitments, especially because I'll be competing in two national speech
tournaments in April 2018), I will try my best to offer help and leadership
in various capacities.

Comments from the whole community are appreciated.

Cheers,

Joseph

Some companies consider social responsibility to be cheap to comply with and gives them brownie points, while others carry on as if they were in a time 40 years ago.
I'll say no more but I had thought with flash being discontinued the age of inaccessible web content was over.

Subject: [nvda] Blindspot may need to close because of Spotify's changing API.

Per [Spotify's new API requirements,](http://developer.spotify.com/) meaning, they are killing off one in favor of the other, in this case, web... means that accessible apps like BlindSpot may not work anymore. It is a huge shame, but not at all shocking. The Git link is below to the thread.

Before anybody asks, because I know many will, and not bother looking it up, blindspot is an accessible, windowless, alternative application to Spotify that works using the keyboard only, and is only on Windows. The issue thread is below.

Re: loading nvda not there

A minor correction to Jonathan's message.
We press alt + enter on a file or in this case, a shortcut, to get its properties, not the control key.
I like using shift + control for all my adaptive software shortcuts, I think it is easier for me than control + alt.

Unless of course some other shortcut has hijacked the shortcut sequence. You can of course make it anything you want. I have = set up as narrator for example.

This is not a function of exactly but of the Windows explorer application.
If you have a NVDA icon on your desktop and that icon has a shortcut key
associated with it than the alt-control-N will work.

So, find the NVDA on the desktop, and then type control-enter to open its
properties. Tab through the dialog until you hear shortcut and then type N
followed by enter. At this point the keystroke should be working again. You
can do equivalent process for other items on your desktop like Word or Mail,
if you like.
