Sounds to me like could be screen lock/suspension - try hitting ctrl + alt + delete when the computer seems to have gone to sleep?


And, make sure that NVDA is set to be on at windows logon, etc., even if your computer normally logs in automatically.

It will only check the drive after you restart, and it will take longer than usual to restart, because it will be checking the drive.

Require help with NVDA

Hello list members,

I am Sultana and this is my first post to the list. I have installed
the latest version of NVDA on my computer and I have been using it as
my primary screen reader for quite sometime now. I am seeking your
help to perform some tasks using NVDA. I would like to be
able to work with buttons on a web page or a form that read as
"Clickable". When I hit Enter on a clickable button, it does not get
activated. Please let me know as to how to activate it and also make
sure that the button is activated.

Besides, I would also like to know the keyboard shortcuts or an add-on
if any, for closing
pop up windows when I log-on to a website.
Kindly advise.
Your help is highly appreciated.

I see that not using NVDA causes the problem not to happen so that part is solved.  I don't see how this is a disk problem.  I think the relevant part of the NVDA log needs to be sent to the list so people who know enough technically can see what might be happening.  Others on the list can tell you how to submit the log. 
 
What is NVDA doing or what isn't working properly after a time of not being used?  Of course, I may be wrong but I am more than skeptical that a hard drive problem has anything to do with the problem. 
 
I still think the power settings should be checked.  I don't know how likely this is, but it still could be that something, the hard drive, the monitor, something, is turning off and can't turn on properly if NVDA is running.  It may be that the computer is going into something like sleep or standbye and isn't turning on properly when NVDA is running.  Or perhaps keyboard input isn't being properly received when this happens when NVDA is running.  I think the hard drive is the least of the possibilities.

I don't see how this has anything to do with a disk problem.  Something happens if the computer is not used for a certain period of time.  Check the power settings in the computer.  Is it set to always on?  Is anything specified to happen after a certain period of time such as that the hard drive will stop or something else will stop or that the computer will go into stand by or sleep?  Dis problems cause data to not be properly written to disk and to be lost or corrupted or cause data not to be properly read from the disk and to be corrupted or lost in that way.  This sounds like a power management problem.  Make sure the always on setting is being used.  If it is being used now, the problem needs more investigation.  If it isn't being used now, use it and see what happens.

problem with a specific website and google chrome

Hello all,

So I prefer to use google chrome, as it doesn't seem to slow down my computer like firefox often does lol.  However, I can't access much of my online banking through wells fargo when I use google chrome.  Basically, any object that is labeled as a button, once I log in to the system, doesn't work.  When I press enter or use the space bar on the button, nothing happens. I have tried it with the same result using jaws as well.  My sighted husband can use the mouse and access everything fine; everything on the site works fine with firefox.  Anyway, I was wondering if by chance anyone uses wels fargo for their online banking and has the same problem with chrome?  Or if anyone has any ideas of anything else I could try.  Thanks so much,

Below are some additional notes.

My PC is a Lenovo Yoga with an I5 processor and 8 gigs of ram.

Windows 10 and Office 365 are up-to-date.

Sometimes I have a Baum VU20 attached via USB. This is especially true, when I am working with formulas In Excel. The freeze also occurs, if braille entry is being used.

NVDA 2018.1 was initially installed using the standard update process. After discovering the issue, I uninstalled NVDA and reinstalled it.

I have also tried to work around the freeze by switching from sapi5 voices to One Core voices. I don’t know if this was worth the trouble, since I’m using David either way. I didn’t know about One Core voices until late last week.

I have an edited log, but it is quite lengthy. I left all the initializing NVDA information, and all of the information concerning Excel, since there appears to be numerous errors prior to the freeze.

I am not new to NVDA, but I am new to this list. I need some instruction as to what to do now.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Well, this happens from time to time and has for the past few versions.  Since it is I will include the log snippit in this posting.  This happens most often when I press the windows key while in Thunderbird but I have seen it in other apps as well.

Ok, I figured out how to find the logs.

 

It looks like it is happening because of a UIA error.

When I put up In-Process last week, I waited until the update was live, but it was just after that the decision was made to set it to only be available automatically for Windows 10 users, so I apologise for not editing In-Process to make that clear.  Since I was putting out In-Process at exactly the time that I would have been putting out a release announcement about 2018.1.1, I joined them together in the one message just to save sending an extra message to the list.  I'll be sure to send two separate messages should a similar situation arise in future.

He seems to like to leave it with windows open locked ofcause, and well its on all night.

The system is often locked up or really sluggish till I restart it.

My general rule is if I am gone for a few hours at home say 2 of them or less is to leave it on but if I know I will be gone for longer than 30 minutes I tend to shut the entire box down. Unless I am doing something.

Re the bug with not starting automatically.  Looks like we might need to look into that further.  I thought there was an issue for it, but I can't find it now (either open or closed), does anyone recall the number?

Brian, likely old news to you now, but yes the final 2018.1.1 is now out.  We have set it so that if you check for updates on Windows 7 or 8, it will ignore it though, as the only fix is the OneCore bitrate fix which only affects Windows 10 users.  If you follow the link in In-Process or go to the download page it will download that version though regardless.

Its not maintained and it doesn't get the latest security certificates automatically anymore.

Yeah eudora 7 was really cool.

I did after the death of eudora 8 or opensource on old thunderbird contact qualcom and ask if it could be set for free, and released so some of us could continue it but was told that due to it using copywrited, and outdated libraries, and a really old programming language, even if those libraries were removed it couldn't be ported easily.

Which is a shame, eudora never crashed, it was quite stable and it never complained.

For its time it was basic crappy single function software but if thats all you need then well fine.

I installed OE 6 on my Win 7 and a friend’s Win 10, and it seems to be doing fine.

This is not Microsoft’s, but it is just like the old OE.

Having followed this thread, I note that Microsoft stopped supporting Live mail in January 2016, it seems that, if the program was already installed on a Windows ten machine, it may still work, however, people may be dissapointed if they try installing it on Windows ten now and Windowsd updates may stop it in the future, who knows?.

We have to accept that Live mail is now outdated, I still use a ribbon version on a Windows seven computer, but it is getting slower as time goes by. For Windows ten I use the Mail app sometimes, but Thunderbird works fine, although I don’t reallyu like it,mainly because it means learning new stuff, but, once you get used to it, it’s tolerable. You can set it up to do all you want with different accounts etc.

The installer for Windows Live Mail is the Windows Essential installer. If you run it and tab around, you will see check boxes to chec to install various Windows essentials programs. I believe Windows Live Mail is checked by default. I believe no other programs are.

It seems that you are speaking of windows live mail--even though you say live mial. either ribbon or non-ribbon; But when I download it, it perports to be windows essentials. This is confusing to me. I have a windows 10 machine with both windows live mail and windows mail and they are both very difficult for me. Whenever I install outlook express, windows just blows it away. I just looked at a ribbon version of Windows Live Mail I have on another machine. In the about dialog, the version number is what looks like a year of release. The build number looks like what would ordinarily be a version number. If I look in the properties of the installer itself, what is given as the build number but it's listed as the installer version. So, while there may be something newer, I ddoubt there is anything much newer.


According to Wikipedia, this is the last release:

2012 (v16.4.3528.0331)

I just downloaded the file and checked. If you open properties of the file, the installer, and look in the versions part of the properties dialog, the following version number is given:

16.4.3528.331


What number are you citing and where do you find it? Windows Live Mail has a version number and a build number. I don't know if there is anything newer than the version I uploaded. I don't remember where I got that version now. But that should be a ribbon version and, whether it is the newest one, I believe it is one of the last versions released.

I just checked on my Windows 7 machine, which is running a ribbon version. It is one of the build 2015 series and that build is a ribbon version. There are different versions in a build. If you want the 2015 version I have a link for, I can send the link. But let's be sure if you want a menu or ribbon version, as I said.

But you might do that after a checkdisk anyway.

To check a disk, go to computer on the desktop, or whatever it’s called in windows 10, (This PC I think).

Move to your main drive and press alt + enter.

Control + tab to tools.

Tab down to drive check.

Make sure both items are checked and space bar on start or okay.

It will only check the drive after you restart, and it will take longer than usual to restart, because it will be checking the drive.

It sounds more like an operating system problem, and not NVDA.
I would recommend unloading NVDA and load Narrator and see if it still happens.
If it only happens with NVDA, you could reinstall it.
If it does not happen with Narrator, I would try a chkdsk in tools of the drive properties.
