It would be nice to find out what people think of the new system for
settings in nvda now in the next branch.I think its very nice though
whether it has any drawbacks is early days to know.

Microsoft usually makes major updates available to different parts of the world at different times.  If it made it available through automatic downloads simultaneously everywhere, its survers couldn't deliver that amount of data.  Also, considering that whenever there is a major update to Windows 10, from one full version to the next, there are numerous problems experienced by enough blind people to amount to something, be careful what you wish for.

But except for adobe flash all updates including ms office seem to be on hold.

An article suggests though that windows 1803 update has come and gone without any release.

No one has any idea, current opinions range from windows team restructure to the fact spring update 1803 doesn't exist and there is a new name being sort to a serious bug in the system.

The net seems to be super quiet to.

I just updated the workstation well 2 of them since I have a remote box here for the big update and nothing.

As to reguards to your system it depends what you have.

For the hp remote here, no drivers have been released today.

No system updates, nothing bar the standard run of the mill security protections you'd expect for a patch tuesday.

Then again, who knows.

If nothing happens by 11-12 pm my time I think we can safely take today off the list.

I don't think anything is coming today.

Could it be that you made the dictionary for an editor program, and there is a separate dictionary for the Internet program you are using?

I know that Jaws uses program specific dictionaries, so perhaps NVDA does too.

Sod's law says as I try to prove the point by doing it here it'll not vanish ... but normally I'll type a word followd by a space, followed by the colon and then the right parenthesis, and as I'm typing it NVDA tells me there is a colon and a right paren (or if I'm using say all it'll say "smiley face" since I've added that into the dictionary) ... but as soon as it posts NVDA reads the word and then a single space and that's it.

My sighted friends tell me that indeed there is a smiling face so FB IS converting it, but why does my NVDA not identify that there is a graphic or even one of those characters that are silent but you know they are there (like accented characters)?

For those who haven't tried the latest Windows 1803 Insider, there's
a new app called Cortana Show Me which is extremely nice for anyone
new to Windows 10.  It's a step-by-step video guide using Cortana for
changing settings and works very well with NVDA.  As of yet, you
can't use your voice, however, after installing from the App store
and launching Cortana Show me, tab over to and choose Settings
category, tab over to a second list containing individual settings.
Once you hit Enter, Cortana will both give you step-by-step
instructions on changing a setting as well as walk you through it.
Rather cool.

I've installed the emoticon addin but it's not really changed
anything. It does speak the text when I read what I've typed in the
edit windo, so :) is identified as a “smiling smiley” whereas my
dictionary entry used to render that as “smiling face”. But, as soon
as I post it to Facebook it vanishes! The same effect as the example I
placed at the start of this thread.

Another curious thing is that the insert emoticon feature of the addin
doesn't seem to insert anything into FB or a notepad window. I
wouldn't expect it to insert anything but ascii emoticons like the
colon and right parenthesis for a smiley face into notepad, but I
would have expected it to put them into FB.

When other people use emojis in their FB posts FB does attempt to
describe them, such as "heavy black heart" (which always made me think
somebody was sending love on a sad matter, but which a sighted person
tole me is not a black heart at all but some version of a red heart!)
... so even with emoticon addin installed I don't seem to be any
closer to being able to use ascii smiley faces in my FB posts!
