NVDA not reading in OpenOffice Writer

Vernon Webb <vernonwebb51@...>

I am helping a new user of NVDA. It speaks application names etc, and it echoed letters as I type in OpenOffice Writer, but it doesn’t speak letters, words or lines as I move around a small doc using cursor keys, up/down keys or Ctrl with cursor keys. Any tips where to look? Thanks, Vernon

Suggestion for nvda

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Now the portable and installed versions are getting dedicated downloaders that substantially work the same way, it would be nice to have a choice in both, to start the new version. At present this is only there in portable versions.
This delay seems to stop the issue of nvda restarting and falling over, at least on my machine. You just wait a few seconds and then OK and it always works, whereas installed version just jumping straight in can sometimes generate an invisible error and only esc and a restart of nvda can fix it. Minor but irritating.

There are perfectly valid reasons for rollouts as they happen right now, with the same update being delivered to different users at different times, sometimes over the course of two weeks or even more. We're talking billions of machines here.

No one has any idea, current opinions range from windows team restructure to the fact spring update 1803 doesn't exist and there is a new name being sort to a serious bug in the system.

For the hp remote here, no drivers have been released today.

No system updates, nothing bar the standard run of the mill security protections you'd expect for a patch tuesday.

Hi all,

I'm unhappy ... I'm having problems with my smiley faces! I'll use my FB post about it and include a bit of NVDA related info into it.

Giles Turnbull is feeling unhappy.
who am I unhappy with? Facebook, of course! I've noticed that when I type a smiley face with a colon and a right parenthesis, Facebook has started stripping that out of my post or comment. It'd be fine if it was doing some techno jiggery pokery and turning it into a propper emoji but,as far as I can tell, it isn't!
Sod's law says as I try to prove the point by doing it here it'll not vanish ... but normally I'll type a word followd by a space, followed by the colon and then the right parenthesis, and as I'm typing it NVDA tells me there is a colon and a right paren (or if I'm using say all it'll say "smiley face" since I've added that into the dictionary) ... but as soon as it posts NVDA reads the word and then a single space and that's it.

My sighted friends tell me that indeed there is a smiling face so FB IS converting it, but why does my NVDA not identify that there is a graphic or even one of those characters that are silent but you know they are there (like accented characters)?

Here's the transcript from the speech viewer reading the FB post:

Giles Turnbull is feeling unhappy.

Sod's law says as I try to prove the point by doing it here it'll not vanish ... but normally I'll have the space before where my colon would be, then a space where the colon should be and then the next word ...
Can anyone confirm whether there is a ascii smiley face, or a pictorial smiley face, as the last thing in this post?
55 mins

Thanks for any suggestions / observations :) ... I'm using NVDA 2018.1 on Win10 and Firefox 59.0.2 (64-bit)

Sorry to post again, but I'm looking for help with this to make our dephi application accessible from NVDA.

There is a Delphi NVDAObjects file at https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/blob/master/source/NVDAObjects/IAccessible/delphi.py that is attempting to make TRichView and TRichViewEdit accessible.  It looks like these entries are very old, but I'd like to know if the accessibility issues has to do with this NVDA file, or if I need to contact the TRichView author about the issue.

I'd appreciate any help very much.

For those who haven't tried the latest Windows 1803 Insider, there's
a new app called Cortana Show Me which is extremely nice for anyone
new to Windows 10.  It's a step-by-step video guide using Cortana for
changing settings and works very well with NVDA.  As of yet, you
can't use your voice, however, after installing from the App store
and launching Cortana Show me, tab over to and choose Settings
category, tab over to a second list containing individual settings.
Once you hit Enter, Cortana will both give you step-by-step
instructions on changing a setting as well as walk you through it.
Rather cool.

I've installed the emoticon
addin but it's not really changed anything. It does
speak the text when I read what I've typed in the edit
windo, so :) is identified as a “smiling smiley”
whereas my dictionary entry used to render that as
“smiling face”. But, as soon as I post it to
Facebook it vanishes! The same effect as the example I
placed at the start of this thread.

Another curious thing is that the insert emoticon feature of
the addin doesn't seem to insert anything into FB or a
notepad window. I wouldn't expect it to insert anything
but ascii emoticons like the colon and right parenthesis for
a smiley face into notepad, but I would have expected it to
put them into FB.

When other people use emojis in their FB posts FB does
attempt to describe them, such as "heavy black
heart" (which always made me think somebody was sending
love on a sad matter, but which a sighted person tole me is
not a black heart at all but some version of a red heart!)
... so even with emoticon addin installed I don't seem
to be any closer to being able to use ascii smiley faces in
my FB posts!

As to reguards to your system it depends what you have.

For the hp remote here, no drivers have been released today.

No system updates, nothing bar the standard run of the mill security protections you'd expect for a patch tuesday.

Then again, who knows.

If nothing happens by 11-12 pm my time I think we can safely take today off the list.

I don't think anything is coming today.

Re: windowsupdate spring 2018

Hi

Looks as though only the insiders will get it first then maybe later on
this week or next for others and later on.

Information came from

Now I'm confused.  The desktop I have Insider Preview 1803 on updated
from 17127 to 17133; however, my primary machine only updated to a
newer 1709 build.

Since my Insider Preview machine is the one I use for trying out new
major updates, I really did think today was roll-out day.

Well today I woke up expecting a big update.

But except for adobe flash all updates including ms office seem to be
on hold.

An article suggests though that windows 1803 update has come and gone
without any release.

No one has any idea, current opinions range from windows team
restructure to the fact spring update 1803 doesn't exist and there is
a new name being sort to a serious bug in the system.

The net seems to be super quiet to.

I just updated the workstation well 2 of them since I have a remote
box here for the big update and nothing.

post them cause who knows maybe some one else is wondering the same
thing. Thank you.

Re: Facebook unhappiness

Did you use paste? The addon only puts whatever you pick into the
clipboard ready for pasting, it doesn't automatically insert things for you.

I've installed the emoticon addin but it's not really changed
anything. It does speak the text when I read what I've typed in the
edit windo, so :) is identified as a “smiling smiley” whereas my
dictionary entry used to render that as “smiling face”. But, as soon
as I post it to Facebook it vanishes! The same effect as the example I
placed at the start of this thread.

Another curious thing is that the insert emoticon feature of the addin
doesn't seem to insert anything into FB or a notepad window. I
wouldn't expect it to insert anything but ascii emoticons like the
colon and right parenthesis for a smiley face into notepad, but I
would have expected it to put them into FB.

When other people use emojis in their FB posts FB does attempt to
describe them, such as "heavy black heart" (which always made me think
somebody was sending love on a sad matter, but which a sighted person
tole me is not a black heart at all but some version of a red heart!)
... so even with emoticon addin installed I don't seem to be any
closer to being able to use ascii smiley faces in my FB posts!
