Currently NVDA Core users (those on next snapshots) are testing massively redesigned Settings dialog. The new design combines various preferences dialogs into a multi-category property sheet. If things go well, the new design will land as part of NVDA 2018.2.

For several months, I and some broadcasters were thinking about adopting this approach for SPL add-on settings dialog. Currently the dialog consists of:

• Broadcast profile controls.
• Buttons to open various dialogs.
• Certain settings on the dialog.

The new design calls for:

• Categories on the left.
• Settings on the right.

Unfortunately, this means there may not be room to include broadcast profiles for various reasons:

1. The new design is meant to feature settings only.
2. If you do select another profile and apply settings, settings will be reflected on the chosen profile, not the active one, causing confusion.
3. There’s really no room to allow broadcast profile controls to stay visible at all times unless it becomes a category, which again introduces possible confusion as one category would control the entire dialog when in fact it should not.

Thus the proposal: should broadcast profiles be split into its own dialog, similar in manner to how NVDA itself does it for configuration profiles?

Advantages:

1. Simplifies code a lot.
2. Settings dialog can focus on add-on settings.

Drawbacks:

1. Reserving another key combo.
2. The concept of tying settings to profiles could be lost initially.

Comments from everyone are appreciated, preferably for those thinking about using NVDA and/or SPL add-on, as well as those who do have experience with multi-category NVDA settings design and the older method.

Yep I am looking at doing a page for nvda screen reader related resources  which i will add it into which will be a separate web page. In that page I will break it down into say audio resources, video resources maybe nvda blogs? about using nvda? Not quite sure of other sections if i do and would be more a point to page but not jeffs one.

Even though he had a good site.

 

I am guessing we do  have links to other nvda resources like on you tube etc but not in the one place.

I was not sure if it worked on XP as when the directions went up i think at that time it had been tested on 7,8 and 10.

 

Would the directions from 10 also work on XP? to get into it as i used to do it the other way that was posted.

 

I have not any XP machines here now to test with.

You will need a pair of eyes to do this plus you might not even have sound.

 

So am guessing you will need to burrow some eyes and give them directions to fix the problem.

I’m having an alarming issue with NVDA eating all my ram through the Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation Process; audiodg.exe.

Quite a technical issue – I’ll

I had been using my laptop, running Windows 10 and NVDA 2018.1.1, for about 3 hours doing a lot of

Emails and document editing using Microsoft word; so not that advanced. Suddenly, I got a blue screen error telling me my virtual memory had been used up and my laptop needed to restart.

I was naturally curious as to what could’ve, first used so much ram, then that it needed to eat all my virtual memory up.

I consulted task manager and found that the windows audio device graph isolation process – file audiodg.exe was using just over a GB of ram! I new this wasn’t normal and as I was watching it was increasing very fast.

It only increases when NVDA is talking though, that’s the weird thing. I’ve verified that all my audio settings are normal and my audio drivers are up to date. There is nothing else I have running that comes close to using this much ram.

After a while the audiodg.exe program uses so much ram that it shifts some into virtual to try and free some ram. This process then continues until over 30 GB of virtual has been used; then I get the blue screen error.

I then tried using narrator to see what happened to the amount of ram audiodg.exe was using and it was a normal amount and wasn’t increasing. I then played some music and the results were fine again.

Has anyone had this issue before that could help me come to a solution on how to fix this weird leak. If there’s anymore info you need please let me know.
