Hi folks.

Just checking out goldwave.

I have the latest add-on installed, 18.03 but when I press play or record, I get no feedback from NVDA.

When pressing NVDA+Shift+C, I hear Toggles speaking of commands, but still no feedback.

Does it make any difference which synth is in use when this occurs? You say it does not have enhancements, but some people have found a generic driver has fixed this problem, implying that some drivers are hiding their enhancements or are just not behaving on synth use through screenreaders.
Strange that Narrator is OK though.

Not every audio device has audio enhancements. So this isn't a surefire fix.

I don't use Gold Wave but not having feedback when certain keys are pressed may be intentional.  When editing, it might really be nerve-racking to hear keys announced repeatedly that you already know and use very often.  When playing or recording, the same may be true.  And, if you are recording using Stereo Mix, you don't want the screen-reader to talk and be recorded unless you are doing something you want to be recorded and you generally wouldn't want commands involved in starting and stopping a recording to be recorded.

Don't assume and, if something doesn't work as you expect, think about why it may be the case.  If something clearly doesn't work properly, that's different.

I use MP3 Direct Cut.  Even when I have NVDA set to speak letters, when I issue commands in NVDA Direct Cut, NVDA doesn't speak.  I would think the same reasons apply in both programs.  These are my guesses about why this is the case.  They may be wrong but they are examples of what I'm describing.

FW: [nvda-spl] Important RFC: separate broadcast profiles dialog?

Hi all,

Because this may impact some of you and to serve as a testbed for other add-ons, I’d like to gather feedback (privately please unless you are part of either the add-ons list or NvDA-SPL list) regarding the below proposal. Only those who have or are thinking about using NVDA, StationPlaylist Studio, and the SPL add-on together should respond.

Cheers,

Joseph

Subject: [nvda-spl] Important RFC: separate broadcast profiles dialog?

Hi everyone,

If you have time, please go over the following proposal and comment on it, as it’ll affect experience for everyone using SPL add-on in the future:

Currently NVDA Core users (those on next snapshots) are testing massively redesigned Settings dialog. The new design combines various preferences dialogs into a multi-category property sheet. If things go well, the new design will land as part of NVDA 2018.2.

For several months, I and some broadcasters were thinking about adopting this approach for SPL add-on settings dialog. Currently the dialog consists of:

  • Broadcast profile controls.
  • Buttons to open various dialogs.
  • Certain settings on the dialog.

The new design calls for:

  • Categories on the left.
  • Settings on the right.

Unfortunately, this means there may not be room to include broadcast profiles for various reasons:

  1. The new design is meant to feature settings only.
  2. If you do select another profile and apply settings, settings will be reflected on the chosen profile, not the active one, causing confusion.
  3. There’s really no room to allow broadcast profile controls to stay visible at all times unless it becomes a category, which again introduces possible confusion as one category would control the entire dialog when in fact it should not.

Thus the proposal: should broadcast profiles be split into its own dialog, similar in manner to how NVDA itself does it for configuration profiles?

Advantages:

  1. Simplifies code a lot.
  2. Settings dialog can focus on add-on settings.

Drawbacks:

  1. Reserving another key combo.
  2. The concept of tying settings to profiles could be lost initially.

Comments from everyone are appreciated, preferably for those thinking about using NVDA and/or SPL add-on, as well as those who do have experience with multi-category NVDA settings design and the older method.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

Dear Gene,

thank you for your great job. This is very important for the whole community. I have forwarded your links to the german community and in the translations group.

I hope I will find some time during next week to provide you some suggestions.

I propose to split the related sources in “development sources” and “user specific sources”. In this way we could add links to github and bitbucket as well.

Hi Adriani

There is a under construction page that went up tonight for nvda screen reader related resources off the main website at http://www.accessibilitycentral.net
When more resources get added there may be links off the nvda related web pages on my website that point to that page.

I have a rough idea of categories for the resources.
These can be changed  or added to.

Not quite sure of other sections if i do and would be more a point to page but not jeffs one.

Even though he had a good site.

I am guessing we do  have links to other nvda resources like on you tube etc but not in the one place.

Would the directions from 10 also work on XP? to get into it as i used to do it the other way that was posted.

I have not any XP machines here now to test with.

Hi

the old way to get into safe mode in windows 10 can be found here at https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-boot-to-safe-mode-with-command-prompt-2624541

You will need a pair of eyes to do this plus you might not even have sound.

So am guessing you will need to burrow some eyes and give them directions to fix the problem.

Hi folks.

Just checking out goldwave.

I have the latest add-on installed, 18.03 but when I press play or record, I get no feedback from NVDA.

When pressing NVDA+Shift+C, I hear Toggles speaking of commands, but still no feedback.

Hi,
Eh? Are you sure you are in a sound window?
Cheers,

Correct, my device doesn’t have this so unfortunately doesn’t apply.
Thanks though

Not every audio device has audio enhancements. So this isn't a surefire fix.

Hello,

Have you tried to disable the audio enhancements, please read below.

In order to fix the high CPU usage, disable the audio enhancements processed by the audiodg.exe file. To disable the audio enhancements, try the following steps:

1. Right-click the speaker icon in the right-hand notification area on the taskbar.

2. Select Playback Devices from the menu. A list of devices should appear on the screen.

3. Double-click the device that has a green checkmark. The properties windows for that device should open.

4. Click the Enhancements tab at the top.

5. From the list of enhancements, uncheck all of them, or click the Disable all enhancements checkbox.

6. Click the OK button to save your changes and close the window.

7. Click OK to close the Playback Devices window.

Hi All

I’m having an alarming issue with NVDA eating all my ram through the Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation Process; audiodg.exe.

Quite a technical issue – I’ll

Try and explain it the best I can.

I had been using my laptop, running Windows 10 and NVDA 2018.1.1, for about 3 hours doing a lot of

Emails and document editing using Microsoft word; so not that advanced. Suddenly, I got a blue screen error telling me my virtual memory had been used up and my laptop needed to restart.

I was naturally curious as to what could’ve, first used so much ram, then that it needed to eat all my virtual memory up.

I consulted task manager and found that the windows audio device graph isolation process – file audiodg.exe was using just over a GB of ram! I new this wasn’t normal and as I was watching it was increasing very fast.

It only increases when NVDA is talking though, that’s the weird thing. I’ve verified that all my audio settings are normal and my audio drivers are up to date. There is nothing else I have running that comes close to using this much ram.

After a while the audiodg.exe program uses so much ram that it shifts some into virtual to try and free some ram. This process then continues until over 30 GB of virtual has been used; then I get the blue screen error.

I then tried using narrator to see what happened to the amount of ram audiodg.exe was using and it was a normal amount and wasn’t increasing. I then played some music and the results were fine again.

Has anyone had this issue before that could help me come to a solution on how to fix this weird leak. If there’s anymore info you need please let me know.

Thanks

Luke

Re: question about when making A portable copy of NVDA

Hello, when you check this checkbox all your settings and addons will be built into the portable copy.

Cheers,
Ralf

Hi yesterday I made A portable copy of my NVDA.

And what I was wondering is when making A portable copy can you check the box that says used saved configuration or something to that wording.

And then make the portable copy?

Or is it better to not check that box when making your portable copy?

I didn't have that box checked when I made my portable copy.

Also what about different synthesizers that you may have added as an add on?

Will those copy in to your portable version as well or do you have to first make the portable and then add the speech synths in that you want after you have it made?

Hi David,

You're most welcome!  Although, full disclosure, I say that as someone who had nothing to do with implementing the fix, I simply passed on the information about it existing :)

Glad to hear it's working in any case!

Quentin.

Hi everyone,

Firstly, for anyone who tried yesterday's Next build, we found a couple of issues and recommend updating to the latest version for fixes: https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/snapshots/

Re the shortcut keys, yes the original shortcut keys still work, you can press NVDA+control+k to open the dialog directly in Keyboard settings, NVDA+control+m for mouse settings, NVDA+control+d for document formatting settings, etc.

Also, re the search idea, yes we are definitely planning that.  We wanted to get the new dialog out there initially with essentially the existing functionality, and then build on that, but a settings search feature is planned.

Kind regards

Quentin.
