Re: New to NVDS

Bonnie :-) <sparkle30906@...>

Thanks Joseph.
In the past, I have used ZoomText, mainly for magnification but did use the Reader some. I have not purchased the ZoomText version that is compatible with Win10. Because my eyes can tire easily, especially when looking at the screen too long, thus I thought I'd try a screen reader.
At this point, the speech rate is a bit fast for my hearing. lol
I could not find any user guide or tutorials.. without paying for them. I don't mind buying if I'm going to be able to use it but so far, it seems like something is missing.

Thanks
Bonnie

Hi Bonnie and others,

First, welcome to the world of NVDA.

Okay, let’s slow down a lot:

  • Based on what you’re telling us, am I correct in thinking that you are coming from a different screen reader?
  • What settings are you interested in changing?
  • Have you gone over NVDA’s user guide (online) and various tutorials to become familiar with NVDA in general?

To others: I think it is vital that we get to know the user first before suggesting all sorts of settings and intermediate concepts. Without knowing what the user wants (such as exact settings he or she wishes to change) and level of familiarity with NVDA, we won’t be able to guide the user to places where he or she can change appropriate settings. This is the reason why I said above that we need to slow down a lot before continuing.

P.S. For those coming to NVDACon this year, I’ll touch up on human factors in my session on providing technical support.

Cheers,

Joseph

NVDA does have settings for adjusting the speed, voice, etc. if you wanted to create a speech rate when your reading from top to bottom, you need to do this using the profiles option in NVDA..

Do you have another screenreader running on your computer?

Do you have another screenreader installed, even if it's not running?

How are you sending these emails to this list? I can see you're using Outlook
Express Classic edition, but how do you use this if NVDA is not yet working?

Hi,

Hmmm, that’s concerning. Can you try the following for me please:

  1. After you hear NVDA say, “loading NVDA …”, wait one minute.

2.       Press Windows key to open Start menu and see if NVDA announces things.

3.       Press Windows+D to see if NVDA announces Desktop items.

4.       Press Insert key and F12 key to see if you hear current time.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: New to NVDS

Hi,

Well, I didn’t recommend my tutorials myself for a number of reasons:

  • There are better tutorials out there now, including several that are a collection of helpful videos.
  • Due to drastic changes made in recent (and upcoming) NVDA versions, majority of what I say in my tutorial set is really out of date.

For the time being, my tutorial set will work, but if anyone wants to update it, let us know (preferably on a brand new thread). Note that due to changes coming in NVDA 2018.2 (in regards to settings interface), you need to do something about completely reorganizing NVDA configuration sections.

Cheers,

Joseph

Bonnie,

Best advice Joseph. It is far too easy to change settings unintentionally that can make using NVDA feel more difficult than is the case.

Surprised that Joseph did not suggest his own series of tutorials. He recorded these and it is wonderful to listen on a device like a phone or tablet while trying out steps on your computer. I can’t imagine the amount of time he put into developing and then updating these. He makes them free to download.

Have fun, and as a teacher told me about editing, when you lose the Zen with whatever, get up and walk away for a time. This is a concept to live by. I only wish I could internalize it.

Weather Plus4.7 13.05.2018 update available

Adriano Barbieri

Hi to every one,
Changes in this version:
• For convenience has been updated the function in "details";
The information about the altitude are now provided by veloroutes.org.
This leads to small differences of little relevance.

Weather Plus can update alone, however, it is possible to download
manually from the following links:
http://www.nvda.it/files/plugin/weather_plus4.7.nvda-addon
or from page:
http://www.nvda.it/weather-plus/
or from page:
https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/weatherPlus.en.html

Make sure that the extension of the downloaded file is correct, otherwise
rename it in .nvda-addon.
Thanks

Cheers

Yes, I asked if you knew of an add on to give the uncluttered reading experience in waterfox.
At the moment I'm trying to get consistant ad blocking in waterfox. Seems a bit flaky, ie disable then enable leaves it disabled but says its enabled. I have tried three the final one is ultimate, and this seems more promising that the ublock flavours that worked well in firefox.

It also seems less prone to the unknown issues as well as allowing the file hippo ad on for updates to work when its on.
I had to turn off a lot of the safeguards for downloads etc, or nothing every finished downloading!

Hi just installed this. It looks reasonable so far, though it did very
quickly flash up something about restricted accessibility but it vanished
before I could respond The ad blocker it imported did not block ads,
eventually ublock origin was tested and its better.
Now it keeps on presenting a button to check if updates are there for add
ons in the add on manager, but it seems not to do anything. If I search I
find its all the time trying to get me to download firefox instead.
So navigational sounds work, downloads work and setting new search
providers works.
I think most of it seems like the old Firefox, though some pages seem to
take a little longer to load, such as filehippo

Also no read article mode as even the 52 version of Firefox has is not
there, maybe there is an add on for this?

Obviously I have not made it the default browser as yet, but it does seem a
lot simpler to set up though it shares the add on manager sulk mode of
Firefox, where you need to close it and open it again to make it work.
So anyone using it got any tips for it. I have not tried chrome as yet. I do
not really want to fill up my drive with browsers just yet.

Re: Waterfox

To be honest this may be old vs new tech, I am unsure if I will retry firefox again on windows 10 with the latest cpu unit I get.

What does make me like waterfox is that it will continue to use the classic as well as new tech.

The new addons basically cut out a lot of the accessibility menus and the like not all controls worked and multiprocesser on this 3rd gen intel made things slow down a lot and the fan race.

On waterfox, I can choose to run a multi processer mode or not.

As I said in my post, I am trying to find an add on that allows uncluttered reading like f9 does in the new firefox, but its not so much of a big deal to carry on dealing with a browser which seems to be still half baked.
Better than it was of course in 57 of course, but not very forgiving and keypresses take time rather than the instant of 52, which is now no longer being maintained after this month.

Is there a addon for fire fox 60 that will do what navigational sounds does?

No I don't like the spongy response of Firefox now its been 'improved worse' by using the quantum engine. That is why I'm auditioning Waterfox and later Chrome.

Re: Deja Vue all over again?

I think the only solution to this is that the blind never run in sets.

I am not sure about work places but for my users that are none the wizer I will do as much as I can to make sure that users use the normal experience they are used to all of them came from win7 and when I update their systems I modify them so I can use them, they won't even see the features.

I think the problems will start when such features get established in the workplace and then if multiple sessions can be running of an app in different sets its going to get very confusing as to which version one is actually in, leading to mistakes. Whereas a sighted user can see at a glance several sets are running, the blind person is going to be stuck as usual only within a single set at a time and making sure its the right one is really important.

Well just like universal and desktop apps for me windows gets more and more confusing, as long as I can open programs the old way and close them the old way I will be happy.

I probably should not have listened to this, but I did. it was an explanation of the new sets feature of windows 10 in the next update.
They are talking about having program sets, that open in tabs on a single window. IE programs opening inside the same window hence the name set, you switch between sets with alt tab, but between applications in a set with shift tab, which could pose some issues for things already using these keys I'd say. In other words its a bit like browsers do with tabs.
Now when I first came to Windows in 3.1, it had program groups withed many programs inside one icon named a group. Obviously in those days the power to have so much going on at the same time was just not there, but this does seem to be going back to those days in a way.
So instead of just shortcuts in the groups, you keep the running session of that software, almost like windows within windows.
Back in the old days, a program called Desqview tried to do this in Dos, but once again the power was not there to really achieve this.
I'm not sure how all this will impact the key presses we are all now used to like alt tab, and I guess if we do not want to make up sets, then there will be no differences. However they have already started multiple virtual desktops and this seems to be on top of this. One might get very confused unless the non power user or learner can revert things to default while one tries to get used to things.

On top of that a lot of the functions seems to be going toward doing most things in Edge, and using bing as the only search system in programs like Notepad which is also being updated they say to make it more Linux like, something I'm not familiar with.
Just listening gave me a headache!
