Re: Best Synthesizer

erik burggraaf <erik@...>

Synthesizers are all very preferencial.  I really like the espeak american varients though that makes me a bit of an oddball.  If you only want english language support the dektalk access add-on is outrageously good.  Much better than the phonix distrobution and in my experience, it's extremely fast and stable.  Pronounciation is good.  Inflection is fine especially if you used dektalk a lot and liked it.  If not, inflection does some funny things that may take getting used to.

Anyhow, google it up and see if you like it.  I think it's on a third party add-on site.

Best,

Erik

Re: HELLO THERE

Darren Harris

Thank you. I did get the win10 app essentials addon. I believe the latest version of skype isn’t that accessible so is there an earlier version I can get? Windows 10 doesn’t come with skype preinstalled does it? I have business skype as I have my office 365 subscription but I’m not sure if I can use that for a normal skype account?

You can see all officially approved NVDA add ons on this page:

You may find and use unapproved add ons but they may not work properly or they may be malicious.  Those that are officially approved are reviewed by members of the NVDA community and are known to be safe and are expected to work properly.

The page I sent a link for has a search field and, below the introductory text, are links to all officially approved add ons.  If you follow a link, you will get more information about the add on and a download link.

there is a Winamp add on, but you may or not care about the extra functionality it provides.  I mentioned that one because you mentioned Winamp.  You may find add ons for other programs you mentioned, I never checked.

Hi there,

I’m a new nvda user. I’m liking it so far I’m really impressed with it.

I’m just wondering about any good addons that might be useful. What do people favour using? I use programmes like iTunes and winamp and skype. I haven’t yet downloaded skype onto my new machine as I’m told it’s not that accessible. Would like more information on this.

adding space for replacement in voice dictionary sometimes resolves
the problem and in some cases and sentences the issue is unfortunately
persist.
what should i do to never hear any punctuation specially in sayAll and
its better if its be possible when navigating line by line?

There is wide disagreement of what the best is.  it's a matter of preference and taste.  it's like asking what is the best frozen pizza.  Do you like older synthesizers such as Eloquence or do you like newer ones, with more human sounding voices but slower responsiveness and, in my opinion, significantly degraded speech accuracy in most of them?  I don't recall the names of any of the newer ones because I dislike most of them and don't use them.  There are a lot of synthesizers you can try or get information about on the NVDA page devoted to this topic:

As Gene said, whether a synthesiser communicates using SAPI says nothing at

Re: Best Synthesizer

SAPI is not a speech engine. It's a definition of a protocol enabling speech
applications (synthesis or recognition) to interface to other applications
(such as a browser).

Some synthesisers can only communicate with other applications via SAPI, some
can do SAPI plus other protocols, some don't do SAPI at all.

As Gene said, whether a synthesiser communicates using SAPI says nothing at
all about the quality of its voices.

Also, to add another answer to the original question "what is the best
sounding synthesizer that NVDA supports?", I would say it's the one you like
best and get on with best. That may not be the same as what someone else
likes. These things are a very personal choice.

Re: HELLO THERE

Re: orbit reader20 back on sale

Josh Kennedy

yes it does have to do with NVDA. Because you can use it as a braille display with NVDA. It costs $449 plus $25 shipping.
http://tech.aph.org/or20

http://shop.aph.org

put orbit in the search box and you'll find it as one of the top search results under products.

Hi Darren,

As Chris said, welcome!

Re add-ons, you can find them either from the NVDA addon's screen in the tools menu (from the "Get addons" link) or from the same page which is http://addons.nvda-project.org/

I'll leave others to suggest their favourites, but I'll offer that if you are interested in learning more of the ins and outs of the program and what it can do, I'd recommend the official Basic Training for NVDA (caveat, yes, I wrote it) module, which is available in electronic text, audio or hardcopy Braille from: http://www.nvaccess.org/shop/

Welcome again, and do feel free to ask any other questions you come up with!

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: how can i change voice dictionary in nvda to espeak not announce punctuation?

Quentin Christensen

Hi Zahra,

Rather than the speech dictionary (which is designed to change how particular words are pronounced), you want to edit the "Punctuation / Symbol pronunciation" options.  Press NVDA+N, then P then find that option in the list and press ENTER to open the dialog.

You can either arrow through the list to find the punctuation to edit, if it is already there, or activate the "Add" button to add a new entry.

When you add a new entry, it asks you to type the symbol to be changed.  Do that and press ENTER.
Next you can tab to "replace" and type the word you want NVDA to read when reading that symbol.
The important one you want I think though, is "Level".  When you change the punctuation level with NVDA+P, any symbol in this list will get read if it's level is at least as high as the current symbol level.  EG if you set the symbol level of a symbol to "Most", When NVDA is set to symbol level none, or some, it won't be read out, but if it is set to most or all, it will be.

See how you go and if that helps.

Kind regards

Quentin.

but it does not matter, i have this issue since nvda 2016.2 (which

i know that i should find speech dictionaries and find voice dictionary.
then press enter on add button and in the pattern type my punctuation
which i dont want to hear in sayAll,
then what exactly should i type in replacement that nvda never does
not announce this punctuation at all when using sayAll and i hear it
only when i need editing documents by navigating letter by letter?
