Yeah agree with you used to get rather angry at sightlings using the system and not setting things.
Or having a broken wire and not telling me.
At best it was 10 minutes of time fixing things to make them work, which meant me being late for a task which would have taken 10 minutes to do but I had issues.
I have had to take their devices, put them on, and change them back to speakers at times.
At worse case, get them to help me turn on the sound, or, turn on and off speakers, load drivers, doodle with things, then follow this through with a reformat to fix everything, only to find a wire or speaker is broken.
Then either buy or reorder a new wire, then the day is wasted.

Danni,
If it turns out that your Windows sound output has been muted, be certain to ask your computer guy if there is a key or key sequence on your keyboard you can hit to unmute it (or to try to unmute it).
On my HP laptop, where I've turned off the "Quick Function Keys" feature so that I have access to the F keys "as God intended," the F6 key is the mute/unmute toggle. F7 is decrease volume and F8 is increase volume. All of these only serve those functions if I'm holding down the Fn key plus the previously noted key together. What's nice is even if the sound is muted, if you attempt to either increase or decrease volume it will unmute the sound as part of that.

Have you had any usb headphones plugged in lately? I notice on some 7 machines the poor thing can get really confused sometimes, depending on the hardware its using. Brian

Re: A recurring error with the latest master snapshot

Well, since I never leave my computer on for long, I'd never seen this at all. I found out quite early on that hibernate, standby and other ways to improve boot up time caused all sorts of problems in the long run, mostly issues with menus not being read or software just not working or lagging. With a machine with an ssd its false economy in my view to use these modes. Brian

Technical: somehow, NVDA Helper is unable to hook into deeper event processing routines. I think numerous issues were raised on GitHub regarding this problem. Cheers, Joseph

Firstly have a look at it with the logging level set to debug, as this may well show up more detail. I certainly get no such error here on the latest master installed copy The windows internal number is correct though, as this is just an internal designation.
If you are bored easily stop reading now as I'm pasting my debug log with no errors and the add ons listed for comparison.

Having a problem with FF and NVDA
I really don’t know if its an NVDA or an FF issue or not, but I’ve been having a really bad problem when I write any edit fields. I’m running FF 60.01. NVDA reads what I type in very slowly. I don’t have this problem in MS Edge. I’ve even uninstalled FF from scratch and deleting my app data for Firefox. Anybody experiencing this? Thanks.. Sent from Mail for Windows 10

I have Windows 7 on this laptop and Firefox 59.02, and am using NVDA 18.1.
The page that loaded when I typed news.google.com is laid out very nicely with headings marking all section titles and links placed on each story and news source listed under each heading. The placement of a link saying more (with section title following) might be better placed under the list of news stories (in my opinion) but it is also fine as it is. I wanted to share with you NVDA users in case you, like me, had switched to Chrome for viewing the news page back when the less accessible news page launched. It's nice to know that we can use either Firefox or Chrome for Google's news page, and that Google fixed the problem.
Here is the url copied from my viewing, since others' preferences might display something else:

Hi all, got some good news, and just wondering about NVDA with VMware Horizon. I recently landed a technical support job with a company called Transcom. I will be helping phone and Internet customers troubleshoot their issues with getting on line, phone troubles, virus removal’s, etc. The catch is, they use a system called VMware horizon that you log into, in order to access the customer portal. Does NVDA work in this kind of environment? The portal itself is web-based, using Google chrome. I know that NVDA will probably have to be installed in the virtual environment, but are there any other accessibility challenges that could arise? Thanks in advance for any help or insight. Have an awesome memorial day weekend, and stay safe if you’re going anywhere.
Thanks,
Guy

I don't remember why I shut it down the first time
but rebooted twice because NVDA was not reading my documents properly, I don't
know how to explain other than to say it would read a line and then nothing even
though I knew there was something there and I tried maximizing the document but
it didn't fix the issue and I also noticed that it kept reading things in double
and when I rebooted heard the sound it made when shutting down
twice!
I'll check volume settings since I tried checking
sounds in control panel and found nothing to fix!

Do other sounds work? I think the sound you
are describing is one Windows sound, which isn't working. This sounds to
me like the kind of problem that should be solved by running a restore
point. If you don't have one, I'm not sure how you might solve the
problem. In future, please describe the problem in detail as you did in
this message. Based on your current description, most of my previous
message appears not to apply. This isn't that Windows sounds aren't
working in general. One Windows sound may not be and I addressed that in

Danni,
If it turns out
that your Windows sound output has been muted, be certain to ask your computer
guy if there is a key or key sequence on your keyboard you can hit to unmute
it (or to try to unmute it).
On my HP
laptop, where I've turned off the "Quick Function Keys" feature so that I have
access to the F keys "as God intended," the F6 key is the mute/unmute
toggle. F7 is decrease volume and F8 is increase volume. All of
these only serve those functions if I'm holding down the Fn key plus the
previously noted key together. What's nice is even if the sound is
muted, if you attempt to either increase or decrease volume it will unmute the
sound as part of that.

Re: File explorer (maybe)
Another way to do that is to browse to a file, and press shift + applications, and then the letter A and the path will be in the clipboard.

I am trying to get clear about what's being asked here.
If it's how to get the path to a file you can do a Cortana/Windows search for the file, then when it shows up in the results and you have focus on it hit the menu/applications key or SHIFT+F10 and select "Open File location" from the pop up menu. You'll open
file explorer for the folder in which that file is located, with focus on that file, and can get the full path, including the file name, using the Copy Path button in the Home tab [or just hit ALT+H,CP]. You can then paste this where you need it. One word
of warning, though, it encloses the entire path in quotation marks, an example of which is:
"C:\Users\Public\Documents\BriTechGuy\Toolbox\Carry_With_Programs\Search_Everything\Everything-1.4.1.877.x64-Setup.exe"
You may need to remove those.
If you're trying to find task scheduler using Quentin's windows search method is the fastest way directly to it.

Re: Chatty infty and math with nvda
HI Erik,
I've used nvda and chattyinfty for math, but it won't help you that much without inftyreader. You need to convert the documents to a format that chattyinfty can read, for it the latter to be of any use. This is what InftyReader does, (very well).
The setup I use now is I convert the documents from the pdf with embedded text set inftyreader, and set the output to .xml, which can be opened by microsoft word. You need to purchase MathType, and install it in Microsoft word, then download a free toolbar, in addition, called Central Access Toolbar, or CAT for short.., here's the link.. while you're there, download central access reader... Google Link to Central Access Toolbar, (I Couldn't Find it online anymore, but I'm sure its out there somewhere): https://drive.google.com/open?id=1utQC3vuq1GqgsRUJo6yfoZM_mVf44df0 and Central Access Reader: http://archive.org/download/CARSetup64/CAR_Setup_64.exe
CAT has to be installed in Microsoft Word, and what you do is recognize your pdf file with infty reader => export as .xml => open with MS Word=> click the "play" icon in the CAT toolbar under the "CAT" Tab, select "Recognized with InftyReader" from the drop down list on the right side of the screen, deselect "linearalize all equations", "unlinearize all equations", "highlight Equations", and "Convert OMML to Mathtype" - (we do the last step next, seperately), and hit the play button. The plugin will transform your document into a well formatted version.
Next Hit the Mathtype Tab, (purchase here: https://store.wiris.com/en), click "convert equations" and make the following selections:
Then wait for Mathtype to process your document, (much better to install Mathtype on a drive with as much space as possible, as it is kind of a memory hog).
Wait for mathtype to finish converting, save document as .docx format, (you can do this before converting as well).
The open Central Access Reader, click the "plus" icon near the top left, and upload the .docx document you just saved... It will load to CAR and you can read it beautifully in this free application, much better than chattyinfty.
Let me know if you run into any trouble!!

I would like to get a head start on next semester's math. I have chatty infty and nvda. Do I need any add-ons? Is any one else using this setup who can give me some insider tips?
I haven't even got my computer set up. It's a weekend project and I just haven't gotten around to it.
Thanks for any advice.
Best,

Do other sounds work? I think the sound you
are describing is one Windows sound, which isn't working. This sounds to
me like the kind of problem that should be solved by running a restore
point. If you don't have one, I'm not sure how you might solve the
problem. In future, please describe the problem in detail as you did in
this message. Based on your current description, most of my previous
message appears not to apply. This isn't that Windows sounds aren't
working in general. One Windows sound may not be and I addressed that in
this message.

You said you had to reboot a number of times
yesterday. Why? Did you have freezes? If you suddenly lose
Windows sounds, and everything else works properly, you can look in the volume
control settings to see what the volume level is for those sounds and, if there
is a mute check box, that it is unchecked. But this may be a problem, if
you had an improper shutdown, caused by something else like a registry
proboem. You may want to check the volume control settings first. If
they are correct, if you have a system restore point or a you run a registry
backup program, running a backup or a system restore point from before the
problem may well be the easiest solution. if you don't have something like
this available, you should. It's very important. You never know when
it may save you a lot of work and annoyance.
Regarding volume control settings, the easiest
thing to do is probably to hold the Windows key, type r then release both
keys. Type sndvol in the run dialog, and press enter. When the
volume control opens, tab around and see what you see for Windows
sounds.

What generation of Windows are you using. It may be
slightly different on Windows 7 than Windows 10, for instance.
Also,
what is the make/model of your computer and did it come with function keys
that were mapped to doing things like muting, increasing/decreasing volume,
increasing/decreasing screen brightness, etc. You may be able to exploit
those, but you'd have to know which are which for your specific
make/model.

Danni,
If it turns out
that your Windows sound output has been muted, be certain to ask your computer
guy if there is a key or key sequence on your keyboard you can hit to unmute
it (or to try to unmute it).
On my HP
laptop, where I've turned off the "Quick Function Keys" feature so that I have
access to the F keys "as God intended," the F6 key is the mute/unmute
toggle. F7 is decrease volume and F8 is increase volume. All of
these only serve those functions if I'm holding down the Fn key plus the
previously noted key together. What's nice is even if the sound is
muted, if you attempt to either increase or decrease volume it will unmute the
sound as part of that.

I've not had this happen before so I have no clue
if I have that specific key or not so I'll ask my computer guy about it or check
my settings on the computer!

the sound on if its off and off if its on.
Many computers can do this
via hitting the Fn key along with the correct F key across the
