OCR Solution

Vlad Dragomir

Dear all,

I need to find a way to transform image pdf files into text. These are mostly books that have been scanned a while ago, but I haven't had the time and patience to find a solution. Now I really need to do something about this, for professional reasons.

I found this Windows 10 app called KNFB Reader, which seems to do exactly that. However, since this is a rather expensive app, I'd like to ask those who have already used it a few things if I may:
1. How does this app deal with multi-lingual documents? Is it possible to choose two or more recognission languages for the same book? Most of my books are manuals. I am a language teacher and it is very important that both languages used in a book be accurately detected.
2. Is formatting being retained, at least in part?
3. Are there any alternatives to this application? It seems to be the only accessible solution, but I might be wrong.

I would be very grateful if anyone could help me with this.

Most sincerely,

Vlad

NVDA no longer gives feedback on copy, cut and paste as before

Gerardo Corripio

This morning i updated several AddOns (including Contents Clipboard Designer), but now when I do Control+c, Control+x etc., NVDA no longer tels me when I copied, pasted or cut text! Is this a bug with the AddOn, or what might I be missing? I'm pretty sure NVDA used to give me this feedback before. Thanks for info.

Hi

If you are not sure where to get the official add ons from when nvda is
running press the nvda key + letter N a menu will pop up then arrow down to
tools then a sub menu will appear then arrow down to manage add ons then
press the enter key. A new screen will appear where there are buttons tab to
the get add ons button then press the enter key and your browser will open.

There will be a list of add ons you can use.

Do you know how to install them? if you are interested i have put together a
web site that may help you it all so includes installing add ons and alot
more in written and audio. it is only for the desk top version of nvda.

it also has a tutorial for winamp and skype etc. it can be found at
http://www.accessibilitycentral.net
There are links on the main page that are blindness related as well as nvda
related. You will find also if you go into one of the nvda pages it is a
website inside of a website so you can bookmark one of the nvda pages and
it will have links to all nvda pages you will see what i mean.

Re: Ccleaner and its new privacy settings

Hmmm, I doubt the privacy thing is not a big issue, its not like its getting anything, I mean it cleans junk files, so the data it would probably share is things like system specs and stuff I doubt its a problem.
The reason this is probably about is the gdpr and nothing more.

A lot of lists resent me messages stating I needed to do something to make sure things stayed activated.

I did and that was fine.

Sadly there were also messages from a few small services I use saying that because of this and because they can't justify themselves the cash to even attempt to understand what is going on that they would close.

I had to hit retry several times to get it to download. It got part way then said source file could not be read, and both firefox/waterfox, and Ie have exactly the same issue on many downloads on the site for some days now whereas just downloaded the latest Jarte and some other things like 7zip from their sites with no issues at all. Looks like filehippo have issues with timeouts or something like that.
Also when attempting to get a portable version I seem to get stuck with the address in the address bar and no page data.

I Personally use VMWare software on a Macintosh for most of my use of Windows OS, but I don't know anything about the Horizon product. If they are encapsulating a remote system through a chrome extension you could have troubles. If they are using just using the VMWare as a VPN type connection to a remote windows environment you have a better chance of things working though they might need to add Orca or NVDA or JAWS onto the remote system.

I worked with ISP Support centers for about 20 years, and in those days they mostly used Solaris based systems to access routers and servers. Solaris is a little bit like Linux these days in that HP allows it to be installed on systems without purchasing expensive hardware.

If you need some support, feel free to write me off list.

No usb headphones! no I get other sounds when I try to do things it would rather I not haha I was having an issue witth files when I opened 1 on a flashdrive and tried closing it for some reason it was telling me it was already opened even though it wasn't hmm a weird quirk that seems fixed after computer guy did some updates yesterday! and btw he said NVDA looked like it had crashed not sure that caused the sounds issue but it explains why it wasn't reading documents correctly and was double reading other things!

 Thanks all!

Hi
I don't know what version of Windows you are using, I'm using W10 and there
is an app called Volume Mixer where you can set volume/balance/mute values
for in my case Speakers, NVDA and System sounds but I suspect there will be
entries for other sound generating apps you may have installed.  I don't get
a ping when I rech the top/bottom of a document using NVDA.  I seem to
recall Jaws had a feature that did this.  On checking through the Windows
sound event list I can't see anything for top/bottom of document but these
events are listed for Kurzweil 1000 which I no longer have installed.

What version of nvda is it. I do notice that the version just prior to xp
support being dropped regularly gave the shut down nvda sound twice as it
exited, and apart from that nothing seems to have been wrong unless you
actually somehow I did have two copies running together which can occur but
nowadays does not, as far as I know.
I concur, go back to a restore point Most of my  operating days have a
restore point when the anti virus update happens, but system restore needs
to be on for this to occur.
Also, there is a piece of software called erunt that saves the registry
daily into folders in windows, and can be restored by simply running the
executable for the date needed.
If its a registry issue this is all you need, but a file issue is better
solved by a restore point.

I don't remember why I shut it down the first time but rebooted twice
because NVDA was not reading my documents properly, I don't know how to

I knew there was something there and I tried maximizing the document but it
didn't fix the issue and I also noticed that it kept reading things in
double and when I rebooted heard the sound it made when shutting down twice!

I'll check volume settings since I tried checking sounds in control panel
and found nothing to fix!

Do other sounds work?  I think the sound you are describing is one Windows

sound, which isn't working.  This sounds to me like the kind of problem that

should be solved by running a restore point.  If you don't have one, I'm not

sure how you might solve the problem.  In future, please describe the
problem in detail as you did in this message.  Based on your current
description, most of my previous message appears not to apply.  This isn't
that Windows sounds aren't working in general.  One Windows sound may not be

and I addressed that in this message.

Re: Does this page sound weird to anybody else?

Ryan,

I can see what's going on and will try to explain why this weirdness is occurring, some of which is pure speculation.

This webpage is not a "straight" webpage.  It opens with the title (which is also a link):               What follows and that starts being read is an embedded object, a Scribd reading pane for a 5 page document.  The "problem areas" are graphics that either do not have any useful alternate text or that gets screwed up somehow when uploaded to Scribd.  In addition this seems to be causing the straight text afterward to be corrupted somehow, as NVDA is not reading item #5 correctly, which is immediately after a large graphic, while the earlier text read perfectly well except for the end of step four, which is Add Parent slash Guardian slash Other link, but with all three of the options run together and the actual slash character between each. The content looks for all the world like it's an MS-Word file.

Showing the Scribd full screen changes nothing.  There is a download link, but you have to be a Scribd member or to log in for 24 hour access with Google, Facebook, or your e-mail.

I'm presuming you're a parent of a student at Saint Leo University.   I'd definitely complain to them about this web page and explain to them that it's not functionally accessible.  Were there a hidden link that would allow you to download the content without the Scribd interference it would most likely read correctly in either MS-Word if it is a Word document or, perhaps, Adobe Reader (or the PDF reader of your choice).

I looked at the source and, though I don't know enough technically about web page design to know if this is correct, it looks to me as though the text is generated by JAVA script.  Perhaps there is a problem when screen-readers try to read such text.

Ah, something I have experienced before. This dialog usually means that NVDA

problem.
Technical: somehow, NVDA Helper is unable to hook into deeper event

Subject: Re: [nvda] A recurring error with the latest master snapshot

Firstly have a look at it with the logging level set to debug, as this may
well show up more detail. I certainly get no such error here on the latest
master installed copy  The windows internal number is correct though, as
this is just an internal designation.

If you are bored easily stop reading now as I'm pasting my debug log with no
errors and the add ons listed for comparison.

Subject: [nvda] A recurring error with the latest master snapshot

I will paste my log below, but the issue here is that every time NVDA is
started it gives an error and an "ok" dialog comes up with a corresponding
sound. Not sure what the error means. It's strange that it shows me using
Windows 6.1--I'm using 7. Didn't know there was even such a thing as
Windows
6!

Controlling your e-mail traffic from Groups.io

Edited

Please forgive this duplicate post, but it's not really a duplicate.  Somehow the list numbering was screwed up in the copy and paste from MS-Word into the Groups.io compose window.  I have corrected that so that what appears here has the correct numbering for all steps in this message and matches the original source material.

What follows can be downloaded in MS-Word format for saving by clicking on:  Controlling_Email_You_Receive_From_Groups.io.docx
If you do so you should be presented with a Windows Save dialog so you can put the file wherever you want it on your own machine for future reference.

[Last Update:  5/26/2018]

If you have never used the groups.io website, you will need to follow the instructions just below to get a password so that you can log in to the site.  Otherwise jump straight on to the section, Advanced Preferences for Your Group Subscription, for the preferences that give you precise control over the messages you’ll receive from groups.io, and in what format, afterward review the section, Groups.io Message Reply and Other Options Sent In Individual Messages and Digests.   Note:  the easiest way to log out of the Groups.io web interface is simply to enter https://groups.io/logout in the address box of your browser and then navigate to that page.  You don’t need to locate the link showing your name, activating it to get the drop down menu, then choosing log out from that menu.

Getting a Password to Log in to the Groups.io Website

If you’ve subscribed via e-mail you have a Groups.io login id, your e-mail address, but you’ve never been assigned a password for the website.  To get one:

1.  In your web browser, go to the Groups.io main site login page:  https://groups.io/login

2.  Find the “Forgot your password?” link and activate it.

3.  A page with a single edit box, e-mail address will open.  Enter your e-mail address in it.

4. Navigate to the one and only button on the page, “Email Link to Log In,” and activate it.

5. Watch your e-mail, including your spam/junk box, for a message from Groups.io that will contain a link you need to activate that takes you to your Groups.io profile page where you set your password.  This is the password you’ll use to log in to any Groups.io group webpage where you wish to do something, such as changing your preferences, that requires you to be logged in to do.  You are, at this stage, actually logged in.

Advanced Preferences for Your Group Subscription

Adapted for Screen Reader Users by Timothy Wynn

These preferences allow you to get very precise control over what messages you will receive in e-mail from groups.io and the format in which you’ll receive them.  You can significantly decrease the amount of e-mail you receive from high-traffic groups while also being able to decide what's important enough to keep an eye on.

Once you get to the main Groups.io webpage, https://groups.io, you will need to navigate to the "Log In" (two words) link and activate it. Once you've entered your username, which is the e-mail address you've used to subscribe to the group(s) you routinely read, and password, activate the "Log In" button and you will be taken to the "Your Subscriptions" page.

  1. If your browser window is not already maximized, do so now (keyboard shortcut is Alt+Space, then X or Windows+Up-arrow).
    1. If the page is restored or minimized, then at the top of the page you'll see a button labeled "Toggle navigation", followed by a link with a graphic labeled "groups.io". This version of the interface will not allow you to edit any of the subscription preferences as far as I can tell.
    2. If the page is maximized, then the top of the page should have a link with a graphic labeled "groups.io", followed by a link labeled "Your Groups".
  2. Use your screen reader's table navigation commands to move to the first table found on this page. The columns should read "Group", "# Members", "Latest Message", and "Delivery". Move to the row for the group for which you wish to set up your advanced preferences, navigate over to the Delivery column, and activate the link found there.  This will bring up the Subscription page which contains the advanced email preferences.  You will have to start back at this step for each group for which you wish to set up the advanced mail preferences.
  3. Just so you're aware these are on the Subscription page, there is a radio button cluster for the Email Delivery options: All Messages, Full Featured Digest, Plain Digest, Daily Summary, Special Notices Only, No email. This is immediately followed by two checkboxes related to using a signature: Use signature for web posting and Use signature for e-mail posting. These are followed by the signature edit box, should you wish to set up a signature that goes on to all your messages if you check one of the previously mentioned checkboxes.
  4. Use your screen reader quick navigation command to find and activate the "Advanced Preferences" heading level 3 link.
  5. There are three major sections to the advanced preferences:
    1. Message Selection. There are two radio buttons: All Messages and Following Only. If the first is selected then every message sent to the group will be sent to you in the format you selected for e-mail delivery. If you select Following Only then the only messages you will receive are messages you've chosen to follow. There is a checkbox associated with "Following Only," "First Message Also." If this checkbox is checked it serves as a selective override such that the first message in any new topic is sent to you so that you can see it and elect to follow it with the link at the end of the message if you wish to keep monitoring this topic.
    2. Replies. There is a checkbox, "Auto follow replies," which will make any topic that you start yourself, or any topic in which you reply to a message, followed. This checkbox is generally only used if you have elected to use the "Following Only" feature for message selection.
    3. Max Attachment Size (only for groups that allow attachments). This is followed by a dropdown box that allows you to choose from four different maximum sizes for attachments to be delivered to you via e-mail. The default is unlimited size. If you're using an internet service with data caps you may wish to change this. If you choose the zero option it means that all attachments will be stripped before a message is sent to you.
  6. Find the "Save" button and activate it to save these settings.

As you can see, if you choose a setup where you have elected to get messages with the "Following Only" option combined with the "First message also" checkbox this will greatly decrease the flow of e-mail you receive while allowing you to decide for each topic whether you wish to follow it to receive further messages or not. If you do nothing then you will not receive any additional messages for that particular topic unless you hit the link to follow it at the end of the message or reply to it, if the "auto follow replies" option was checked.

Groups.io Message Reply and Other Options Sent In Individual Messages and Digests

At the end of each individual  message is this collection of links:

1.       View/Reply Online followed by the Groups.io message number assigned to that message.

2.       Reply to Group (which you’ll probably never use since a straight e-mail Reply does the same thing)

3.      Reply to Sender.  This is how to send a private message to the person who sent the message you’re currently reading.  Activating this link will fire up a new message in your e-mail client of choice, including web based ones if you have that set up, and will put the e-mail address of the digest snippet’s sender in the “To:” field and put “Private:” followed by the actual topic’s “Subject” line after it.

4.      Mute this Topic.   If you wish to stop receiving any further messages related to this topic, whether in the digest or as individual messages if you switch to that mode, activate this link.

5.      New Topic (which you’ll probably never use because it throws you into the web interface for the group to compose a new message for a new topic.  Most will do this just by e-mailing the group posting address.

6.      A number of additional links related to the specific group, which can vary somewhat by group.

7.      A fixed collection of links:

a.      Change Your Subscription – which will take you to the Groups.io page where you can change your basic subscription options or tweak the advanced options for message delivery that I’ve written about separately.

b.      Group Home – which will take you to the Groups.io home page for the group this message originated from.

c.       Contact group owner -  uses the mailto command to cause a new, blank e-mail message to be created with the group owner address of the group already filled in.

d.      Terms of Service

e.      Unsubscribe from this Group – which throws you into the Groups.io web interface for unsubscribing from the group where this message originated.

At the end of each digest message is a collection of links:

1.       View/Reply Online followed by a count of messages in that topic already.

2.       Reply to Group (which you’ll probably never use since a straight e-mail Reply does the same thing)

3.      Reply to Sender.  This is how to send a private message to the person who sent the message in question to the group.

5.      Top ^, which shoots you back to the top of the e-mail message.

6.      New Topic (which you’ll probably never use because it throws you into the web interface for the group to compose a new message for a new topic.  Most will do this just by e-mailing the group posting address).

Re: File explorer (maybe)

slery <slerythema@...>

Nope, still no joy.

The context menu I get when typing in cortana/search and then focusing on the windows app that I want, the context menu brings up: pin to start, pin to taskbar, app settings, rate and review, share, and uninstall.

If I do a search for NVDA and follow those same instructions I do in fact get the option to open the folder. Therefore, I am going to assume it is something specific to windows app that come from the windows store.

Any more suggestions would be appreciated.

Cindy

I am trying to get clear about what's being asked here.

If it's how to get the path to a file you can do a Cortana/Windows search for the file, then when it shows up in the results and you have focus on it hit the menu/applications key or SHIFT+F10 and select "Open File location" from the pop up menu. You'll open file explorer for the folder in which that file is located, with focus on that file, and can get the full path, including the file name, using the Copy Path button in the Home tab [or just hit ALT+H,CP]. You can then paste this where you need it. One word of warning, though, it encloses the entire path in quotation marks, an example of which is:

"C:\Users\Public\Documents\BriTechGuy\Toolbox\Carry_With_Programs\Search_Everything\Everything-1.4.1.877.x64-Setup.exe"

You may need to remove those.

If you're trying to find task scheduler using Quentin's windows search method is the fastest way directly to it.
