Re: accessible DVD burning software with NVDA

Well, whether MP4 can be played in a typical DVD player depends on whether the DVD player supports playing MP4 format, most modern ones do.

Just went through the steps to create a DVD of MP4 files in Anyburn 4.1, 64-bit, and here they are:

1. Open Anyburn.

2. Navigate to Burn or append files/folders to a disc button and activate.

3. In dialog that opens, navigate to Add button then use the standard Windows dialog to navigate to the folder you wish to select the file (or files, if multi-selecting) from, then select it/them.  Lather, rinse, repeat as many times as necessary to get to all the folders and files you wish to have burned to the DVD.

4. Activate "Next" button after you've collected all of the MP4 files (or any other files your player is capable of playing) you wish to have on the DVD.

5. Activate the "Burn Now" button.  You must, of course, have a blank burnable DVD in your drive before hitting this button.

6. Unless you've unchecked the default setting, disc after burning," you will hear the disk eject when it is complete (or if the burn fails in some way, I believe)

Yes, I am trying to burn MP4 files to a DVD to make a DVD that can be played in a normal DVD player.

I installed AnyBurn and when I set it to burn one to the DVD it said that MP4 was not a supported format.  Not sure why the version I have would be different than yours.

What is it that you're trying to do?  It will certainly burn an MP4 to CD or DVD optical media.  If that's not what you're attempting to do that's a different story.  I really thought you were looking for something that can burn files to optical media.

Actually, remember, spotify are braking the api again over the next few years in terms of third party apps? There was discussion on nvda list a few months ago about this.

How would I know if BlindSpot has updated recently? Using it with NVDA at least, I can't get my Spotify Playlists to load as before.

Re: Hello

Brandon Cross <bcross3286@...>

I'd say for just starting out, learn the commands you need for every day use, then transition to new things as and when you need them, or if you are curious, sooner. Becoming familiar with the review cursor and object nav in NVDA are good skills to have, because they can help you gain some extra usability out of apps that aren't the best accessibility wise, and, even the ones that are, you will find that not everything is in the tab index, and things will be hidden from screen readers that are perfectly visible to sighted users. An example of which is the save dialog in reaper, not the render one, but to save a project, that dialog has a bunch of options you never see unless you use object navigation, and some of them are quite useful, such as copying new media into the project folder, what options to use to convert media, such as format / encoding, etc. Screen review is good for trying to figure out what's going on with an app, say, if its not showing anything at all to the screen reader. You switch to the screen review mode, then use the review keys to see if you can get anything. Sometimes you will, sometimes not.

Re: Hello

Gene

Learning some often used commands is important but if you want to use features of NVDA such as screen review and mouse actions, you would likely be far better served by a tutorial explaining such things as object navigation, screen review, and document review.  Object navigation isn't used in NVDA and, while screen review is similar to using the Window-eyes mouse cursor movement and review means of navigation, it isn't the same in terms of commands.  You also need to know how to switch review modes.

For using NVDA with applications where you do everything directly in the application, screen-readers in general are similar.  That's because most commands in that context are Windows commands or program commands.

I'm not sure now what tutorials are current.  I used to recommend Joseph Lee's tutorial, but it isn't clear to me if it is now current.  You may want to use the manual, at least to an extent at this point, but my observation and experience is that most people much prefer and learn better using tutorials than typical manuals.  It may be that the manual would be a good way to review or to learn once you get to a certain advanced level.

The manual or the quick commands reference might be a good way to learn basic commands since you are already an experienced screen-reader user.

Dear NVDA users, developers, sponsors and others,

The NVDA community and NV Access would like to invite you to join us at NVDACon 2018: Future-Proofing NVD8, to be held on June 1-3, 2018 at NVDACon TeamTalk Server.

NVDACon (NVDA Users and Developers Conference) is an annual gathering of the NVDA community to discuss all things NonVisual Desktop Access, a free, open-source, community-driven screen reader for Microsoft Windows. Started in 2014, NVDACon has attracted participants from all over the world, as well as being a venue for reviewing NVDA’s progress, current features, and planning its future. Topics discussed at past conferences include using Google products, add-ons festival, Windows 10 support, DictationBridge, how community members can help develop NVDA without coding it and so on.

This year’s NVDACon theme is “Future-Proofing NVDA”. Today’s NVDA was possible thanks to investments in future-proofing the screen reader in the past. Today, with more people realizing how important accessibility is, and with fast pace of technical innovations, it is important that NVDA, too, react to changes in technology and mindset of users who expect the screen reader to become more integral in their lives in the future. At NVDACon 2018, several sessions, including talks by noted NVDA experts and a keynote by NV Access, will feature what the community is doing to future-proof NVDA, as well as what people inside and outside the community can do to help make technology equally accessible to more people.

For more information about NVDACon, including steps on how to join us, visit g. We the NVDA co9mmunity look forward to seeing you at NVDACon 2018!

Sincerely,

Thanks.

Hello!

Only one small problem...
When tabing and lands in the list of tabs, NVDA does not announce the tab name. If you arrow left or right the names are announced.

Windows 10 1803; NVDA last Next; Dropbox 50.4.71.

I've not used it lately but now Spotify is a commercial company they may well be playing the same game as Twitter ie we control what you do.

How would I know if BlindSpot has updated recently? Using it with NVDA at least, I can't get my Spotify Playlists to load as before.

What about the old CD burner xp as it claims to do dvds and work on windows 10, but as I do not do dvds myself, I'd not know the details.

There is a new version of this just out. However some say it actually works better on phones than on the pc, which is odd as on a phone its getting photo and on the pc, one assumes its a scanned in image already.

Hello Vlad

I bought the KNFB Reader app, but I am rather disappointed with it. It does not at all retain any semblance of formatting. It throws all the text into one ginormous paragraph. I don't think this is what you want.

Maybe you can look at the Office Lens app which is free and available for Windows 10 as well as for smart phones. It retains formatting. It supports language switching and if you are using a synthesiser which also supports language switching, different languages will be spoken correctly. The OCR quality is quite good. Even though it is free, it is better in my opinion than KNFB in every respect except for one: KNFB does the OCR on your local machine or mobile device, while Office Lens does it in the cloud. But I don't think this advantage KNFB has justifies the price. Give Office Lens a bash and see if it will work for you. It really is the best option that I am aware of.

If you can use a mobile device for your OCR, you could also try Prizmo Go which is also free and retains formatting. I am quite impressed with it.

Kind regards

Christo

Dear all,

I need to find a way to transform image pdf files into text. These are mostly books that have been scanned a while ago, but I haven't had the time and patience to find a solution. Now I really need to do something about this, for professional reasons.

I found this Windows 10 app called KNFB Reader, which seems to do exactly that. However, since this is a rather expensive app, I'd like to ask those who have already used it a few things if I may:
1. How does this app deal with multi-lingual documents? Is it possible to choose two or more recognission languages for the same book? Most of my books are manuals. I am a language teacher and it is very important that both languages used in a book be accurately detected.
2. Is formatting being retained, at least in part?
3. Are there any alternatives to this application? It seems to be the only accessible solution, but I might be wrong.

I would be very grateful if anyone could help me with this.

Most sincerely,

Vlad

You are invited: NVDACon 2018 - Future-Proofing NVDA, June 1-3, 2018

Dear NVDA community,

Please pass on the following invitation to many people as possible:

Sincerely,

The NVDACon 2018 Organizers

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: OCR Solution

The problem with all of these and of course the win10 and the add on for nvda is that its extremely time consuming. It would be really neet if you could just present something with a series of pdfs or one big one and come back leater to a workable file of text, even if the graphics and diagrams were missed out.
Not seen this on anything thus far, yet one might suppose those using pdf files might like to have this as a built in process. maybe it is in some pro version of the Adobe Suite, don't know. Certainly fine reader is used a lot by other ocr programs., Muy one issue for English is that i and l can get muddled.
I have a friend called Della, it always makes her Delia, and a nearby place called New malden is New Maiden. Which though can be funny is also a bit irritating!

Abbyy Finereader is not too expensive (around $200 uS as I recall for home users) and will do this. I'm probably going to buy it soon, myself. All reports I have had suggest it is fairly accessible, with some caveats that can be worked around.

Many thanks, I do appreciate your answer. Unfortunately, this won't work in my case, since the site only accepts files that do not exceed 64 MB.
But I do want to thank you for taking the time to get back to me.

Cheers,

Vlad.

Actually I found clipspeak to be slow and buggy, in some cases giving errors in word. I use the dumb clipboard announcements add ons, there are several around but they are not inteligent, in that they do not inform if its worked or not.

Hi,

You need to download the "Clip Speak" add on to get NVDA to inform you
about when you perform the commands to copy, paste, select all.

Hope this helps?

What is it that you're trying to do?  It will certainly burn an MP4 to CD or DVD optical media.  If that's not what you're attempting to do that's a different story.  I really thought you were looking for something that can burn files to optical media.
