Re: Slack accessibility status?

Sylvie Duchateau

Hello Robert and all,
I use Slack every day for my work with colleagues.
The telephone app works fine, but it is out of topic of this list.
I did not manage to use the desktop application that was not accessible when I tested it.
I use it now with Chrome, because Firefox used to be very slow.
I installed a script developed by NV-Access working with the script manager tampermonkey and it works fine.
Here is the link for the script:
https://github.com/nvaccess/axSGrease
You can set slack to not announce all notifications.
the script manager, tampermonkey can be found here:
http://tampermonkey.net/
I hope this helps.
Best
Sylvie

Thanks! Is there an accessible desktop client yet? What is the status of automatic reading of incoming messages using ARIA? Is there an accessibility blog category I can keep up with? I would like to continue to get accessibility updates. I tried it, and, it works best on windows with FireFox. Sometimes, the sounds stutter when NVDA is talking, but this only happens in FireFox 60. Thanks again and keep me informed!

Hi Robert,

I'm just jumping in for Alan and Bel to let you know that we've added in-channel notification sounds for messages, @-mentions, and highlight words, and this should work for your NVDA + Windows configuration.

I hope this helps! Best,

Tomi

Morning all,

I want to use NVDA current release, with an old but lovely dectalk
express, connected to com3 at the present.

Where should I point the old borwser to locate a suitable set of drivers
for this device?

Many thanks.

Re: NVDA 2018.2rc2 now available

Hello,
could this be related to the fact that two instances of NVDA are involved, one for reading the secure desktop, the other for reading the user context? What if the former does not relinquish control of the device for some odd reason?
Best,
Felix

Thank you - the add-on may not have anything to do with it, but testing with it disabled is a good starting point.

I think the problem occurred before I installed the BrailleExtender add-on, but I’ll retest with the add-on disabled.

There's a couple of issues on GitHub on that - not sure if they are Braille display brand specific, but could you please have a look and let me know if any of those match what you are experiencing?  Just so we can make sure your issues is recorded.  https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+braille+wake <https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+braille+wake>

Also you mentioned using the Braille-Extender add-on - I wanted to clarify - does the issue happen with that add-on enabled specifically?  IE if you disable the add-on does your display wake when the computer does?

Also, for those used to getting to the settings dialogs with the shortcut keys (NVDA+control+k to get to keyboard, NVDA+control+d for document formatting etc), those keys all still work.  It's just if you go via the NVDA menu, the key sequence has slightly changed.

By "Verra", do you mean Microsoft Zira (and if so, SAPI 5 or OneCore?) or do you know which synthesizer or language she comes with?

If a OneCore voice, we released NVDA 2018.1.1 specifically to address the OneCore voices from sounding like chipmunks in the Windows 10 April update, so if anything updating from anything to NVDA 2018.2rc2 should be more likely to fix that issue than cause it.  What do you have the rate and pitch etc set to, and what do you have the speed set to in Windows speech settings?

I have been using eSpeak lately, but I changed to OneCore and SAPI 5 and I don't notice anything odd about Zira myself (happy to admit, that could just be "myself")

Re: "Unofficial" NVDA Add-Ons Repository

I totally agree with you Brian! Besides, this obsession about safety isn't always a great thing. I'm not saying that we should go out and look for trouble. However, non-official rarely means dangerous. I've been using computers since 2001, and benefited so much from taking risks and trying new things. Of course accidents happen sometimes,no one is 100 % safe from anything. But if you start by believing that every unknown person is a killer, we might as well spend the rest of our lives terrified in a buddhist monastry up in the mountains. And even that might not be safe actually.

I simply felt I should express these thought for those who might want to listen. This way, those who still hesitate can make an informed decision.

Best regards to all of you, both adventurous and afraid of their own shadows! *smile*

Vlad.

Re: browse mode

Modern computers and even going back to XP didn't need optimization to function properly with screen-readers.  The symptoms described have nothing to do with whether anything is optomized.  Optomizing may make the computer work more efficiently with a screen-reader or it may do something like stop a crashing problem if the file pane in file Explorer is on.  Or it may make something like a file and folder list appear in a screen-reader friendly format.  But no optimization nor lack of it would cause or stop the current problem.  These are needless complications.

I don't know what the solution to the problem is but none of the things you discuss will solve it.

Brennen, there is an awful lot you don't tell us, ie, what version of
Windows you're using, what browser you're using, whether you've
optimized your computer for use by blind individuals, including
browser accessibility settings, and whether or not your version of
NVDA is portable or a standard installation.

I would suggest also viewing your event logs under control panel >
administrative tools, both in terms of systems & application logs as
well as your NVDA log to see if any errors are shown.

Re: browse mode

Hi Brennen and others,
Based on messages from the list archive, this is not a COM registration problem. As Sam pointed out, this may have to do with key mapping problem where you press a first letter key and Windows interprets it as something else.

Can you try the following for me please:

1. Revert to NVDA 2018.1 unless you've installed RC already.
2. Open NVDA menu (NVDA key+N), then open Tools, then select "manage add-ons".
3. See if you have any add-ons. If this is a fresh install, add-ons list will be empty, so no need to go to step 4.
4. If you have one or more add-ons, close Add-ons Manager and restart NVDA in safe mode (add-ons disabled). To do this, press NVDA+Q, then select "restart with add-ons disabled". If this solves the problem, proceed to step 5, otherwise try what Sam T suggests.
5. With NVDA restarted with add-ons turned off, go to NVDA menu/Tools/manage add-ons.
6. From add-ons list, go through each add-on, enable the item (Alt+E), then close and restart. Repeat this step for all add-ons (one by one) until the problem resurfaces.
7. In case the problem comes back after enabling a specific add-on, please write down the name of the add-on so it can be reported to the add-ons community ASAP.

In case the problem is not resolved, please do:

1. Go to NVDA general settings (NVDA menu/Preferences/General for 2018.1 and earlier, NVDA menu/Preferences/Settings/General in 2018.2, or press Control+NVDA+G).
2. Locate "logging level" combo box and set it to "debug" and press Enter to save changes.
3. Use the browser and try issuing some first letter keys.
4. After this, press NVDA+F1 and copy everything from the window that appears and send it to info@... as an email message. Be sure to describe what's going on and paste the log content.
5. Return to general settings and set log level to info.

In step 4, I said it should be sent to another email address because setting log level to debug causes everything you type and NVDA speaks to be logged for the world to see, and for many, this is a big concern.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Joseph
P.S. For others: I'll teach you what I just did as part of a three-part Beginning NVDA Tech Support training later in June.

Re: "Unofficial" NVDA Add-Ons Repository

Hi,

The position of the NVDA add-ons community is that we encourage add-on authors to submit add-ons for review so they can be featured on the community add-ons website. This allows new authors to be recognized for their contributions and for folks to find add-ons more easily, and eventually, allow add-on updates from official sources (for now).

In the past, the review process for add-ons was strict. This was greatly relaxed in 2016 to check for basics only, with an option for authors to request more stringent reviews on a case by case basis. I think this may have caused authors to not submit add-ons in the past, but that’s slowly changing.

There are two more reasons (more of a technical nature) that submitting add-ons for review are encouraged (and I will go around the add-ons community to help out once more):

  1. Python 3 compatibility: the foundation is being laid to upgrade to Python 3 in the future. In terms of the add-ons community, people who will be most affected by will be those running really outdated add-ons that wasn’t edited to Python 3 standards.
  2. wxPython 4: soon, NVDA users will get a chance to test wxPython 4 code again. This impacts any add-on that relies on GUI and wxPython features for certain tasks.

There is a third reason why we encourage reviews: NVDA Core code compatibility. Some add-on authors, including I, have declared that due to various reasons, latest add-on releases (current and future) will require NVDA 2018.2 and later for optimal functionality, and usually add-on reviewers catch this quite early. Also, there will come a day when add-ons that declare themselves incompatible with a certain minimum version of NVDA will not be loaded by NVDA itself (unless overridden by developers). These changes are first applied to add-ons on official community add-ons repo, and then cascades to others.

Cheers,

Joseph

That's not really the issue.  There exist add-ons written for software that are not a part of the official add-on repository.

I agree that the stuff at the official repository is great, but that doesn't mean that stuff that's been "privately developed" is not equally useful.

Reading back it said no check boxes etc that sounded like you were in
browse mode. Was this in the browser? or some other program?

From what sam said it sounds like it could be a possibility with your
anti virus raining problems there.

well let me see if I can try to answer all these at once I am running a standard version of NVDA I don’t know what you mean about accessibility settings for Internet not sure exactly what that means I’ve tried this with all browsers with the same result so edge internet explore and if I checked the air logs I’m not sure I would know what I’m looking for chrome

Hi,

You could just stop all the Sophos services if you're a local admin.

The following command would do it:

wmic service where "caption like '%Sophos%'" call stopservice

Note: Change stopservice to startservice to start them back up.

go
into the preferences of nvda then go to tools a sub menu will come
off
it then locate the following menu called Run COM Registration Fixing

tool... then press the enter key.

I am not sure after that but after the process should register any
broken dlls that nvda needs to use.

let us know if it does the trick.

By the way after you press the enter key on it the menu e pointed you

if you want to hear them spoken have a look under the browse mode
settings and uncheck the following box called Audio indication of
focus
and browse modes

then save your settings.

If you tab a couple of times do you hear unknown or pane?

Do you also hear it under say the running applications part on
windows
and it is not speaking the icons down there and some other stuff
like
that?

By the way which version of nvda are you running? did you download
the
latest nvda 2018.2 rc2 version if so there is a tool in this
version of
nvda that might fix it.

If you are not really getting that stuff then we can sus some

Thank you - the add-on may not have anything to do with it, but testing with it disabled is a good starting point.

Yes, the problem is similar to several of those reported in GitHub, except that I’m testing with a VFO/Freedom Scientific Focus display, and the display is successfully detected after resuming from laptop suspend – it’s just lost during the transition from the log-in dialogue to the desktop.

Quentin.

Having just upgraded a machine to 2018.2-rc2, everything seems to be stable so far, including the Braille-Extender add-on. I’m still experiencing the issue with the braille display not being active after returning to the desktop from laptop suspend (it’s properly re-activated during the log-in dialogue, but lost upon returning to the desktop). I reported the details in another thread.

However, I was seeing that problem under 2018.1, so it isn’t a regression in 2018.2.

Thanks Felix!

Also, for those used to getting to the settings dialogs with the shortcut keys (NVDA+control+k to get to keyboard, NVDA+control+d for document formatting etc), those keys all still work. It's just if you go via the NVDA menu, the key sequence has slightly changed.

Wow! Congrats on an excellent RC from my point of view.

Just noticed that the preferences dialogs have been completely redesigned as a single dialog with categories. That'll take some getting used to, but I think the move is rational.

Hi Gary,

Quentin.

Hi everyone,

Well I was a little slow to post about NVDA 2018.2rc1, and before I had a chance, rc2 is out!

This is a release candidate, which means that unless any critical issues are found, this will be identical to the final 2018.2 release.

Highlights of this release include Support for tables in Kindle for PC, support for HumanWare BrailleNote Touch and BI14 Braille displays, Improvements to both Onecore and Sapi5 speech synthesizers, improvements in Microsoft Outlook and much more.

You can download NVDA 2018.2rc2 here: https://www.nvaccess.org/download?nvdaVersion=2018.2rc2 <https://www.nvaccess.org/download?nvdaVersion=2018.2rc2>
