I’ve been using NVDA off and on for a while now but I really try not to use my computer for a whole Lot of things anymore because it’s just easier to use my phone or fire tablet to do things

but there is one thing that I was having a hard time doing on my tablet so I thought I would try to use my computer and I was trying to navigate the web to do this and that’s when I noticed the problem I have a little bit of experience with other screen readers but this is the first time I’ve ever experienced this problem and I’m not so good with the more advanced stuff like aeror logging and things like that I am however OK with what you have suggested I can try that to reproduce the problem

hi so doing with Joseph said and putting NVDA in safe mode seems to have fixed the problem in terms of which ad on caused the problem I can’t say for sure because when I tried to enable one add on at a time and then restart nvda they all enabled at once so I’m not sure which one is the issue or if any of them were the issue but I will remember this for next time

Brennen, there is an awful lot you don't tell us, ie, what version of
Windows you're using, what browser you're using, whether you've
optimized your computer for use by blind individuals, including
browser accessibility settings, and whether or not your version of
NVDA is portable or a standard installation.

I would suggest also viewing your event logs under control panel >
administrative tools, both in terms of systems & application logs as
well as your NVDA log to see if any errors are shown.

It makes me appreciate the precious commodity and beauty that words themselves possess and convey. such a study done thoroughly in an academic setting could indeed be very interesting. Again for those who have dexterity issues I understand the advantage dictation can offer but I hope it never becomes the ultimate be al and end all as such.

A long time ago, when there were no personal computers, I tried dictating rough drafts of one or two college papers instead of writing the rough draft.  The quality of writing wasn't nearly as good so I wrote out the drafts and discarded what I had dictated.  I may not have dictated more than a page or two before I stopped.  When I listened to the results of my partial work, they were inferior.  I don't think it's just a question of slower work.  I think that when you write, you think differently in terms of your use of language. 

 

You see comercials promoting dictation software showing students using it.  But this is something that should be challenged by educators and a public discussion should be had on the subject.  In my opinion, such software, advertised as a replacement for typing may be deceptive and should be challenged so we can find out.

Afternoon, or at least here it is.
Long time in the past, I did graduate study work on the writing process and computers. Any speech recognition work that was being done then was at Bell Labs or MIT, so there was no consideration of it as a writing tool. What I do know is that the process for experienced  writers when composing is far different than the processes we use when speaking. Keyboards or even handwriting provide humans the time to switch between long and short term memory and the time needed to use the mediating steps we use writing. Maybe that is why some folks get in trouble when they speak with no mediation, no comments about just who that might be. I fear Tweeting is more like talking than writing, lots more chance to write what you didn't quite mean.

As to brain implants, I hate the fact that forces out there are tracking every web site I visit and everything I purchase. I am not ready for Google or Amazon to be poking about in my brain. Just speaking for me, I think I could get in a great deal of trouble that way. Just saying, not thinking.

the end of VFO.



Everything is going to be voice activated in the next 3 years. There isn't
any other way for web developers to go.

speed jet aircraft. Nothing stands in it's way.



There will be some people who won't change. Or use both methods to carry out
tasks. Now VFO have to utilize jws to act on voice commands. With Dug in
Microsoft. I can see VFO being left thousands of miles behind. Then when
they introduce pay monthly fees. The very fast extinction of jws and other
products will come to a very sudden and dramatic halt. They may think they
have the market share for programs relating of the blind. They don't any
more and they are the ones who are blind and not us.

hi so doing with Joseph said and putting NVDA in safe mode seems to have fixed the problem in terms of which ad on caused the problem I can’t say for sure because when I tried to enable one add on at a time and then restart nvda they all enabled at once so I’m not sure which one is the issue or if any of them were the issue but I will remember this for next time

Modern computers and even going back to XP didn't need optimization to function properly with screen-readers.  The symptoms described have nothing to do with whether anything is optomized.  Optomizing may make the computer work more efficiently with a screen-reader or it may do something like stop a crashing problem if the file pane in file Explorer is on.  Or it may make something like a file and folder list appear in a screen-reader friendly format.  But no optimization nor lack of it would cause or stop the current problem.  These are needless complications.

 

I don't know what the solution to the problem is but none of the things you discuss will solve it.

Brennen, there is an awful lot you don't tell us, ie, what version of
Windows you're using, what browser you're using, whether you've
optimized your computer for use by blind individuals, including
browser accessibility settings, and whether or not your version of
NVDA is portable or a standard installation.

I would suggest also viewing your event logs under control panel >
administrative tools, both in terms of systems & application logs as
well as your NVDA log to see if any errors are shown.

Which would be ideal, if  everyone did it, but they don't for myriad reasons.

I think that most sentient adults are capable of making risk assessments and deciding whether or not they wish to take them.  Those using add-ons from other than the official repository must know, or they do now, that doing so is at your own risk (AYOR).

But, my experience with software in general far more closely mirrors that of Vlad, "non-official rarely means dangerous."   I cannot count the number of "very focused purpose" mini-utilities I've used that were developed by some individual based upon their need that later fulfilled one of mine, and perfectly and safely.  

One of the big mistakes I think that both NVDA and JAWS have made is not setting up "official but unvetted" repositories for user-created add-ons/scripts.   There is just so much material out there that's been created for "odd little needs" that could so easily be shared if the mechanism existed "at the source," but it doesn't.  I got huge push-back from "the powers that be" when I started a repository (personally maintained) of repair, restoration, & other miscellaneous resources for Rolls-Royce motorcars.  The Rolls-Royce Owners' Club wouldn't touch it, saying they couldn't be responsible if any of the goods or services were found to be substandard, but it's now become a reference that's used the world over (at least if the e-mail messages I've received over time, and keep receiving, are any indication).  In this day and age there is just no excuse for not promoting information sharing so long as those on the receiving end know that they need to do their own risk assessment about its use, which they should be doing anyway for anything, and letting the chips fall where they may.  The world at large is not, and will never be, "sanitized for your protection" and one must move through the world with that always in the back of one's mind.  How far to the back will vary, greatly, depending on the situation and stakes at play.

This is happening in version 2018.1.1 as well.

It also happens in Excel 2016. Does it happen in all Office programs?

In this fragment of the log file I can see that the menu selection occurs twice in the string but the first one should be a place marker or code reference as it starts with “u’” Perhaps this is causing the incorrect double speaking of the menu item?

Not sure if this is a new bug but I don't recall this occurring with 2018.1.1.

Issue: When navigating in Word 2016's backstage view (file menu) each item is announced twice.

Steps to Reproduce

1. Open Word 2016 (Office 365.)

2. Press alt+F to open the backstage view.

3. Press down arrow to navigate items.

Actual Results

Each item is being announced twice. Example: "new new" "open open" 

Expected Results

Each item should be announced once.

Modern computers and even going back to XP didn't need optimization to function properly with screen-readers.  The symptoms described have nothing to do with whether anything is optomized.  Optomizing may make the computer work more efficiently with a screen-reader or it may do something like stop a crashing problem if the file pane in file Explorer is on.  Or it may make something like a file and folder list appear in a screen-reader friendly format.  But no optimization nor lack of it would cause or stop the current problem.  These are needless complications.

 

I don't know what the solution to the problem is but none of the things you discuss will solve it.

Brennen, there is an awful lot you don't tell us, ie, what version of
Windows you're using, what browser you're using, whether you've
optimized your computer for use by blind individuals, including
browser accessibility settings, and whether or not your version of
NVDA is portable or a standard installation.

I would suggest also viewing your event logs under control panel >
administrative tools, both in terms of systems & application logs as
well as your NVDA log to see if any errors are shown.

but many people experienced different browsers and i wish that know
your experience as well as other users observation and test with other
browsers.
which of the browsers that i mentioned did you test?
chromium, vivaldi, slimjet and opera.
i need chrome based browsers for reading pdfs and there is not any
perfect and accessible free program that can supports farsi pdf files
for me.
also, between chromium and google chrome, which one is the best
program for accessibility using with nvda?

features work better with NVDA than with JAWS, some work better with

than with Voiceover, some work better with Braille than with speech
output, so there isn't a single way of measuring the accessibility of a
browser that is meaningful to everyone

3. it also depends on what sort of websites you visit and what you want
to do with your browser, so for some purposes and users one browser /
screenreader combination may be best, but for other uses and users that
may not be the best choice.

I want to use NVDA current release, with an old but lovely dectalk
express, connected to com3 at the present.

Where should I point the old borwser to locate a suitable set of drivers
for this device?

Since you mentioned that the text is “very big”, it sounds like maybe it’s
scrolling off the screen. This isn’t anything to do with NVDA, but it should
make it easier to review a long stream of command line output. Type in your
command string and append “|more”, to it, without quotes, but including the
vertical bar | symbol. When text reaches the bottom of the screen you will
see a prompt to press a key, which causes the text to scroll forward another
screen. This will keep happening until the command output has finished.
