Subject: Re: [nvda] browse mode
Hi,
I see. Please do report back with results.
Cheers,
Joseph
I’ve been using NVDA off and on for a while now but I
really try not to use my computer for a whole Lot of things anymore because
it’s just easier to use my phone or fire tablet to do things
but there is one thing that I
was having a hard time doing on my tablet so I thought I would try to use my
computer and I was trying to navigate the web to do this and that’s when I
noticed the problem I have a little bit of experience with other screen
readers but this is the first time I’ve ever experienced this problem and I’m
not so good with the more advanced stuff like aeror logging and things like
that I am however OK with what you have suggested I can try that to reproduce
the problem
Hi,
So if I get this right, disabling all add-ons fixed the
issue where NVDA said things like “no next checkbox” when you press H from
web browsers? This is going to be very interesting indeed.
Please try the following for me:
- Restart with all
add-ons disabled (please follow the message I wrote yesterday as to how to
do it).
- With NVDA restarted
this way, go to NVDA menu, go to Tools, and select “Manage
add-ons”.
- Go through each
add-on entry and press Alt+E to enable that add-on alone.
- Immediately after
enabling an add-on, press Escape to close Add-ons Manager and say “yes”
when asked to restart.
- Try using a web
browser and see if the problem you’ve described earlier
returns.
- Repeat steps 2
through 5 for another add-on until you encounter the issue
again.
I’m curious: how long have you been using NVDA and how
comfortable are you with this? I’m curious because I get a feeling that you
might be a recent user or might not be familiar with certain
things.
Cheers,
Joseph
hi so doing with Joseph said
and putting NVDA in safe mode seems to have fixed the problem in terms of
which ad on caused the problem I can’t say for sure because when I tried to
enable one add on at a time and then restart nvda they all enabled at once
so I’m not sure which one is the issue or if any of them were the issue but
I will remember this for next time
Modern computers
and even going back to XP didn't need optimization to function properly
with screen-readers. The symptoms described have nothing to do with
whether anything is optomized. Optomizing may make the computer work
more efficiently with a screen-reader or it may do something like stop a
crashing problem if the file pane in file Explorer is on. Or it may
make something like a file and folder list appear in a screen-reader
friendly format. But no optimization nor lack of it would cause or
stop the current problem. These are needless
complications.
I don't know what
the solution to the problem is but none of the things you discuss will
solve it.

Brennen, there is an awful lot
you don't tell us, ie, what version of Windows you're using, what
browser you're using, whether you've optimized your computer for use by
blind individuals, including browser accessibility settings, and
whether or not your version of NVDA is portable or a standard
installation.
I would suggest also viewing your event logs under
control panel > administrative tools, both in terms of systems &
application logs as well as your NVDA log to see if any errors are
shown.

Re: [SUSPECTED SPAM] Re: [nvda] Voice Activation, was The future of NVDA
I’m not being sarcastic here, but voice and keyboard both may be a thing of the past. I have read articles and watched shows where folks are controlling computers
via thought.
So it isn’t a stretch to imagine that soon we will be interacting via thought processes.

Then, there is sub-vocalization. It's something being worked on.
However, I agree that a keyboard interface isn't going anywhere soon.

Thanks everyone for a great discussion!

A long time ago, when there were no personal computers, I tried dictating rough drafts of one or two college papers instead of writing the rough draft. The quality of writing
wasn't nearly as good so I wrote out the drafts and discarded what I had dictated. I may not have dictated more than a page or two before I stopped. When I listened to the results of my partial work, they were inferior. I don't think it's just a question
of slower work. I think that when you write, you think differently in terms of your use of language.
You see comercials promoting dictation software showing students using it. But this is something that should be challenged by educators and a public discussion should be had
on the subject. In my opinion, such software, advertised as a replacement for typing may be deceptive and should be challenged so we can find out.

Afternoon, or at least here it is.
Long time in the past, I did graduate study work on the writing process and computers. Any speech recognition work that was being done then was at Bell Labs or MIT, so there was no consideration of it as a writing tool. What I do know is that the process for
experienced writers when composing is far different than the processes we use when speaking. Keyboards or even handwriting provide humans the time to switch between long and short term memory and the time needed to use the mediating steps we use writing.
Maybe that is why some folks get in trouble when they speak with no mediation, no comments about just who that might be. I fear Tweeting is more like talking than writing, lots more chance to write what you didn't quite mean.
As to brain implants, I hate the fact that forces out there are tracking every web site I visit and everything I purchase. I am not ready for Google or Amazon to be poking about in my brain. Just speaking for me, I think I could get in a great deal of trouble
that way. Just saying, not thinking.

Hello NVDA community. It’s Sky. I wanted to ask you guys a question. Will
NVDA be incorporating voice commands in into the screen reader? Because a
friend of mine has told me that in three years everything is going to be
voice activated. Yes we have dictation bridge for Voice activation, but what
my friend means is that in three years, the computers, etc. will all be done
via Voice activation without a keyboard. Here is what he has to say.

Hi Sky,
I just received an email from my local supermarket. I do an on line shop
there every week. From today I can order it via Alexa, Google home and other
apps using voice only ordering.
I did say this is the way forward. With Amazon and Google competing, this
voice activation is going to be the next huge thing in computing. I've said
this for a while as you know. The next step is using actual programs/apps
via voice activation. Just watch my friend. VFO is finished, on the way out.
They won't be able to compete in an open market. Not as huge as this one.
Just imagine my friend. At the moment I have my favorites in a shopping
list. Think about the key strokes I need to use to get to them? Then
additional items. I have to do a search of often up to 40 products with a
similar name. arrowing down, tabbing down. Then adding them to my shopping
basket. Going through the dates for delivery and times. Then all the key
strokes in using my card details authorization process. All done with our
voice. At least quarter of the time normally spent shopping. This does spell
the end of VFO.
Everything is going to be voice activated in the next 3 years. There isn't
any other way for web developers to go.
Progress sometimes my friend is slow but when it starts, it is like a high
speed jet aircraft. Nothing stands in it's way.
There will be some people who won't change. Or use both methods to carry out
tasks. Now VFO have to utilize jws to act on voice commands. With Dug in
Microsoft. I can see VFO being left thousands of miles behind. Then when
they introduce pay monthly fees. The very fast extinction of jws and other
products will come to a very sudden and dramatic halt. They may think they
have the market share for programs relating of the blind. They don't any
more and they are the ones who are blind and not us.
Live long and prosper, John

Firefox 60, with NVDA 2018.2RC2, can't click on links
Hi, I’m having serious issues clicking links in Firefox 60, when using NVDA 2018.2RC2. This issue has occurred for many versions of Firefox for me. What can I do? Thanks, Jessica Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Hi, So if I get this right, disabling all add-ons fixed the issue where NVDA said things like “no next checkbox” when you press H from web browsers? This is going to be very interesting indeed. Please try the following for me: - Restart with all add-ons disabled (please follow the message I wrote yesterday as to how to do it).
- With NVDA restarted this way, go to NVDA menu, go to Tools, and select “Manage add-ons”.
- Go through each add-on entry and press Alt+E to enable that add-on alone.
- Immediately after enabling an add-on, press Escape to close Add-ons Manager and say “yes” when asked to restart.
- Try using a web browser and see if the problem you’ve described earlier returns.
- Repeat steps 2 through 5 for another add-on until you encounter the issue again.
I’m curious: how long have you been using NVDA and how comfortable are you with this? I’m curious because I get a feeling that you might be a recent user or might not be familiar with certain things. Cheers, Joseph

The symptoms described have nothing to do with whether anything is optomized. Optomizing may make the computer work more efficiently with a screen-reader or it may do something like stop a crashing problem if the file pane in file Explorer is on. Or it may make something like a file and folder list appear in a screen-reader friendly format. But no optimization nor lack of it would cause or stop the current problem. These are needless complications. I don't know what the solution to the problem is but none of the things you discuss will solve it. ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Sunday, June 03, 2018 7:56 PM Subject: Re: [nvda] browse mode Which would essentially leave him on the net exposed to every piece of malware known to hackerdom. Brennen, there is an awful lot you don't tell us, ie, what version of Windows you're using, what browser you're using, whether you've optimized your computer for use by blind individuals, including browser accessibility settings, and whether or not your version of NVDA is portable or a standard installation.
I would suggest also viewing your event logs under control panel > administrative tools, both in terms of systems & application logs as well as your NVDA log to see if any errors are shown.

Here is the “Save As” recorded in the log file: “Speaking [u'Save Save Alt, F, S']” I am using: NVDA version 2018.1.1 Using Windows version 10.0.17134 workstation Using Python version 2.7.14 (v2.7.14:84471935ed, Sep 16 2017, 20:19:30) [MSC v.1500 32 bit (Intel)] Found add-on Eloquence Hi. Not sure if this is a new bug but I don't recall this occurring with 2018.1.1. Issue: When navigating in Word 2016's backstage view (file menu) each item is announced twice. Steps to Reproduce 1. Open Word 2016 (Office 365.) 2. Press alt+F to open the backstage view. 3. Press down arrow to navigate items. Actual Results Each item is being announced twice. Example: "new new" "open open" Expected Results Each item should be announced once.

You can turn off and on add ons individually.
You are turning them all off or on at once, which is a separate feature. I
can't conveniently check how to do this, but someone is very likely to tell you
how.

hi so doing with Joseph said and putting NVDA in safe mode seems
to have fixed the problem in terms of which ad on caused the problem I can’t say
for sure because when I tried to enable one add on at a time and then restart
nvda they all enabled at once so I’m not sure which one is the issue or if any
of them were the issue but I will remember this for next time
Modern computers and even going back to XP didn't
need optimization to function properly with screen-readers. The symptoms
described have nothing to do with whether anything is optomized.
Optomizing may make the computer work more efficiently with a screen-reader or
it may do something like stop a crashing problem if the file pane in file
Explorer is on. Or it may make something like a file and folder list
appear in a screen-reader friendly format. But no optimization nor lack
of it would cause or stop the current problem. These are needless
complications.
I don't know what the solution to the problem is
but none of the things you discuss will solve it.

Re: external serial synthesisers
The Dectalk ability you have is likely an illegal
add on. And no Dectalk software, legal or illegal, has been as good as the
old Dectalk external synthesizers or as the software emulations such as Text
Assist, available a long time ago.
At some point, the code for DectTalk was
lost. Attempts have been made to reconstruct it, but no reconstruction is
as good as the old code.
plus using an external synthesizer of any kind
removes the problem of using a single sound card with what you hear to record
audio with no speech from the screen-reader.

thanks brian for your help. yes, i use 32bit and wish that use 32bit system and softwares forever. how about slimjet, chromium and opera? did you test any of these softwares too? do you mean that all firefox 52esr versions of firefox are slow on xp and old hardwares? the only version of firefox which i did not have any crash or slowness, was firefox 25 On 6/4/18, Brian's Mail list account via Groups.Io <bglists=blueyonder.co.uk@groups.io> wrote: Onn of the problems you will find is that most are 64 bit so if you are still using 32 bit computers, you are not going to be able to run them. Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
I don't know slimjet but Opera was rubbish for me. I have not tried others as as you say they are based on the same basic engines so there really is no point. Most of them are based around the google code or the mozilla code. I am currently liking waterfox but its based around the 64 bit version of the pre quanntum firefox. It is however much snappier than the firefox vversion. Brian

I do not think you will find such a list, because:
1. browsers change too quickly, with new releases, bug fixes, extra features etc, so it would be a lot of work to keep any list up to date with these changes
2. there isn't a single measure of "accessibility" because some browser features work better with NVDA than with JAWS, some work better with JAWS than with Voiceover, some work better with Braille than with speech output, so there isn't a single way of measuring the accessibility of a browser that is meaningful to everyone
3. it also depends on what sort of websites you visit and what you want to do with your browser, so for some purposes and users one browser / screenreader combination may be best, but for other uses and users that may not be the best choice.

Do you really need this? I have a dectalk software emulation as an add on on my nvda, not sure where it came from though. Brian

Morning all,
I want to use NVDA current release, with an old but lovely dectalk express, connected to com3 at the present.
Where should I point the old borwser to locate a suitable set of drivers for this device?
Many thanks.

This isn’t anything to do with NVDA, but it should make it easier to review a long stream of command line output. Type in your command string and append “|more”, to it, without quotes, but including the vertical bar | symbol. When text reaches the bottom of the screen you will see a prompt to press a key, which causes the text to scroll forward another screen. This will keep happening until the command output has finished.

Hi all! Advise, please, how to read very long information messages in applications of a command line tools with NVDA? For example, in dialogues of SDKManager. Simple commands text viewing allow to read only a small part of long dialogues. Objects navigation commands and commands of review cursor also not worked. Therefore i can't check the list of available addons to install in command-line tools "sdkmanager" - list addons is very big.

Re: "Unofficial" NVDA Add-Ons Repository
Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
I think though that one is always going to find people writing thing out of a requirement they have not always conforming to the strict guidelines we have. It is always up to the user to decide the risks. I also concede that anyone doing this and not in the know about new nvda versions might end up having an add on that screws up the software. Also when python 3 version of nvda comes along simply dealing with the old legal and tested add ons is going to be a very big task for somebody! Brian

Safer to stick with the official add-on repository Things have been tested there On 3 Jun 2018, at 11:27 pm, Brian Vogel <britechguy@gmail.com> wrote:
Lanie,
Thanks much! I'd far rather not "reinvent the wheel" and if someone has something they don't find in the official repository, or already in Jeff's, they'd ought to be sending them to him.
