Re: Important notice about upcoming Windows 10 App Essentials 18.06/18.05.3: provisions to support NVDA 2018.2 RC

Hi,

The biggest change in version 18.06 is rewritten code so it can be powered by NVDA 2018.2 features. In particular:

  • Because NVDA 2018.2 includes a fix for the “unknown” announcement problem in quick link menu (Windows+X), the add-on no longer carries this fix.
  • Added support for IUIAutomation5 interface introduced in Windows 10 Version 1709 (Fall Creators Update). Specifically, NVDA will now announce notifications from recent app releases such as Calculator, Alarms and Clock, Microsoft Store and others. NVDA 2018.2 includes a trivial implementation, while the add-on includes mitigations for specific cases.
  • If using Windows 10 Redstone 5 (Insider Preview) and if Sets is enabled for you, NVDA will: announce search suggestions when you search for things in new Sets page, and will announce name of the selected tab when you switch between app tabs.
  • Added support for redesigned emoji panel and related features in Windows 10 Redstone 5 (Insider Preview), including announcement of cloud clipboard suggestions.

Cheers,

Joseph

Subject: [nvda] Important notice about upcoming Windows 10 App Essentials 18.06/18.05.3: provisions to support NVDA 2018.2 RC

Hi everyone,

In a few hours I’ll release Windows 10 App Essentials 18.06 and 18.05.3. Due to vast differences in some code sections, both will be released at the same time, targeting different NVDA versions:

  • 18.05.3: NVDA 2018.1.1 and earlier.
  • 18.06: NVDA 2018.2 RC and later (including stable version).

Please follow the below procedure from start to finish:

  1. Windows 10 App Essentials 18.05.3 will hit the air first. Please use add-on update check facility to check for this version.
  2. Shortly afterwards (in a matter of minutes), version 18.06 will hit the air. If you happen to be using 18.05.3 and find that version 18.06 is offered: say “yes” if you are using NVDA 2018.2 RC or snapshot builds; say “no” if you need to keep 2018.1.1 or earlier around until 2018.2 hits the air.
  3. If you accidentally install 18.06 on a computer running NVDA 2018.1.1, or install 18.05.3 on systems with NVDA 2018.2, don’t worry – procedures are in place to help you upgrade/downgrade to appropriate release. I’ll provide direct links for those who need them.
  4. Once NVDA 2018.2 stable hits the air, add-on 18.06 will be offered to everyone.

The above procedure does not apply if you are using development snapshots of this add-on (both regular and pilot variants). However, due to code differences between regular and pilot snapshots, regular development snapshots will be paused for a while. Once NVDA 2018.2 hits the air, development snapshot variants will merge back into a single variant – regular builds until a new NVDA snapshot calls for separating the variants again.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hello:

For a while now, I've had issues when updating to new snapshots of NVDA.

It's a hit and miss deal with me.

Currently, I"m running a fairly new install of Windows 10, 1803. The

version of next I'm running is NVDA next-15159,465f57b2. There is a

newer snapshot available, but, I can't get it through update functionality.

How can we troubleshoot this and get it fixed permanently? This problem

has persisted for a bit now, a month or two, possibly. Any ideas to help

with this are appreciated.

Re: Python Console

Brandon Cross <bcross3286@...>

Or as a handy calculator, since it can easily be accessed through NVDA control Z, just make sure you pass both floats if you expect a float in return, so in other words, don't do 5/2 and look strange when it says 2 rather than 2.5. This limitation has been removed in python 3, and NVDA can still do it, I think you have to import something and do something else, but for general use, just make sure all numbers are floats if you're looking for a float in return.

Re: Python Console

Hi,

Yes and no. You can experiment with Python here, but not all libraries are not included in NVDA. The python Console is mostly used to test new code ideas or probe accessibility of various controls.

Joseph

Hi, I'd like to change the format of the status bar in Notepad++, so that when I tell NVDA to read it, it says the line and column where I am, before any other information. Is it possible?

Alternatively, I would apreciate suggestions of other text editors besides AkelPad, which seems discontinued.

Thanks,

I just tried to make a portable copy of NVDA, after updating my local copy.
I gave it the right drive path, but I did not specify \NVDA
This made a mess in my drive and I hope I only deleted the NVDA files in order to re-do it.
I have made portable copies of NVDA many times before.
I thought that it automatically made the NVDA directory.
Did this change?
I would think that by default, it should create a folder called \NVDA.

Doing a folder is not hard, but if one is expecting a folder to be made, you don't write one in.
There lies the problem.

It would need an extra listbox somewhere and maybe a few lines of code

Re: Beware next snaps for a few days.

Well I had this with winamp.

I'd update it, then it wouldn't start.

WIndows would want me to send a report to microsoft all the time.

If I turned error reporting I got a nice error and then things would lock up.

So I would start by pulling plugins out, and run winamp with nothing.

It would run.

I then put all output and other plugins in, standard plugins first.

It would run, by degrees I would put in a plugin at a time till I had a problem, I'd then put it somewhere else in another folder I'd keep doing that till I had a folder of unworking plugins by the end of that winamp would start though I would have a folder of unworking plugins that stopped winamp from starting.

Usually it was 1 or 2.

And 99.9% of the time, I could search google for them, and there would always be an update or a discontinuation and a link or simply a link to get rid of a bunch of plugins and replace things with 1 that worked for a lot of things.

Its a thing I miss now.

A modular player, if something crashes, find out what it is and update it with another module.

Re: NVDA compatibility with Sitebuilder

One thing, if you do get wordpress, until I know more you should use the classic editer plugin just in case gutenburg comes out and its not finnished.

Naturally when rumors on tidbits came out I went to wordpress access who had always said that it wouldn't come out till it was ready.

However just in case it does, unless classic editer is binned, there is no real need to transition ourself to another engine unless we need to.
