We allow off topic discussion to a certain extent but this isn't even remotely connected with technology and it is also likely to stir up a lot of discussion on the list.

Subject: [nvda] Question about diminished expectations of blind people, by people who can see

Hi,

Something I have struggled with all my life is peoples' misunderstandings about blindness. People who are not blind often shy away from me in social situations, just because I am blind. I have faced this at school and work. People might think that just because I am blind, I cannot perform at the same expectations as everyone else.

This question was bothering me badly over the weekend. The feedback I received is that people may see blindness as something they cannot cure or fix, so they treat them as outcasts.

What can blind people do to educate people who are not blind?

Thank you,
Mike

Meaning you can only show a few people about blindness at a time?

Thanks,

Re: how can i set nvda that never announce graphic graphic out of graphic?

Gene

To answer two questions from two members, the speech dictionaries are empty until you add something.

I am assuming you know how to use the dictionary.  To make graphic not be spoken, Instead of typing something to be spoken in the pronounced as field, type a space.

Re: URL links

Jonathan COHN

Hello,

The commands curl and wget can be used to directly retrieve files to your system given the URL. I don't believe either of these commands work for streaming media and you will need to install them to work at all. I believe the wget command allows one to get all referenced URL's in an HTML file while the curl command has options to send user name / password and support for cookies also.

I have been asking for an easy object customizer addon for years that would both let us easily reclass objects to other types, rename them, including labeling graphic objects manually or with tooltips, and sharing those customizations with others application specific or globally saved profiles. So far no addon has been made that will easily let us do this. Currently to do any of this you have to be into python programming, which I am not good at.

Hi there,
Notepad++ had a few quirks that I didn't like, but overall, it is accessible, and you'll probably be able to turn the nasty stuff off at any rate. To be honest, I use Notepad2 (www.flos-freeware.ch), which I believe is a lighter version of Notepad++ without all the extra nasties, which I use all the time. But you still have all the cool stuff like line ending conversion, line sorting, blank line removal, duplicate merging etc. I guess the only caveat with that is that it's not regularly maintained, I believe the last update was some time in 2012.
Cheers,
Damien.

have a way of selectable just stopping the announcement of the object type

one supposes then leaves you a little in the dark about everything else. I

Could I just say that I have the echo dot, and you do need to bear in mind that to install one on your network you need a computer or smart phone with a wireless connection not a wired one.Although you can then run the alexa app on a pc with a wired connection to tweak it, in order to install the device on your network the pc or phone or tablet has to be able to see all wireless signals around including the Echo and your router.
As far as nvda is concerned, my one gripe with the pc alexa app is sluggishness when you type into the fields, ie it can take over a second to say a letter and if you have nvda set to echo you hear the letter twice. Also the tabs sometimes misbehave if they are a long list like skills or history and make it hard to know where you are. I think either nvda needs to look at this or Amazon does. I'm told its fine on mobile devices though.

Sorry folks, I know this
does not relate to NVDA,
but it's my response to Kerryn.
Kerryn,

Here is a solution to the
password problem that I
have found. Others here who are much wiser than I
will not recommend it
and I have not tried it yet; but I think I'm going
to. The software that
you download will create a bootable CD that one would used
to boot the
computer in question. A program, supposedly, comes
up that allows you to
do things with your password. One of them is to
remove it.

It's kind of a last
resort thing for me; but it's
the only way I will be able to access this computer.
Others say to
reinstall windows; but I don't know of a computer
today that comes with an
install CD. I assume there are many packages of this
type; but the one I
downloaded can be found at:

https://www.isumsoft.com/windows-password-refixer/

Good luck.

Kerryn,

No, it will not.

Passwords exist for a reason: the
security of the owner and
their data. It is incumbent on those setting
passwords to do what
they require to have access to them if they cannot
remember them.
Password security (as in the ability to manipulate
them by the admin) has
gotten progressively tighter over the years, and for
good
reason.

In the case of a Windows
10 computer if one does not have the password you can
reinstall Windows
10. You can also extract data from the hard
drive using another
computer and connecting it as an external drive.

Re: how can i set nvda that never announce graphic graphic out of graphic?

Stephen Costigan

Where are the speech dictionaries, when I go into  the NVDA settings the
dictionaries are blank i.e. there is nothing in them.

Try using the speech dictionary to stop graphic from being spoken. I

actually, none of the three format announcing property sheets seems to
have a way of selectable just stopping the announcement of the object type
if its a graphics. Sure you can turn off object type announcements but this

one supposes then leaves you a little in the dark about everything else. I
think, personally, I've come to live with this, making sure that when I hear

the word start to be spoken I go away or hit control to shut it up.
It is giving valuable info of course and its a sad fact of our lives that
telling us what is on the screen to help us understand layout is one of the

problems. While its telling us about buttons and their state ie pressed or
not it also tells us if the bit we are on is a graphic and even a graphic
button indeed.

hello every one.
like gene, recently i changed my mind and decided to give chrome a
try.
it is very greater than firefox in stability, speed, and handling big
and dynamic web pages like quora which i subscribed and answered
hundreds of questions.
however, when nvda sees a title or the name of one person, first says
graphic, graphic and when i navigate by word nvda says graphic and out
of graphic!
i dont want to hear graphic at all!
what should i do in nvda to achieve this?
it even says
graphic sometimes both before and after the names!
for example: graphic zahra, zahra graphic.
i realy hate hearing anything except the content that i read or want
to interact with.
thanks so much for any help, God bless all!
