the best thing I have found is to do OCR on the file and let the OCR program insert the spaces where they belong.

Re: Dropbox innaccessibility again

I am on windows 10, and the latest version of DropBox reads fine for me when I share a folder and when I accept a folder invite. When I accepted a folder invite I did not have to accept any captures. :) And yes, I know how to spell captcha's but I just wanted to piss some people in this thread off. :) I'm not sure why the captcha's are appearing. I've been trying to find a decent accessibility contact all morning. My emails to other departments are opened, but not replied to. I generally don't write to general email addresses in cases like this. I have yet to get a decent reply from anybody over there so does anybody have any contacts?

Re: NVDA And Avast Free Anti Virus

Turning off self-defense allows NVDA to see the available information on screen.  It does nothing aside from that to improve accessibility.  Using JAWS with self-protection on or off, doesn't change what JAWS sees and, with self-protection on, the program is better protected from attack.

If I needed access beyond the time a JAWS demo runs, since that is what I use now and then, if necessary or desirable, I would turn self-defense off and use NVDA for the that operation, such as a scan, then turn it on afterwards and use the JAWS demo with the program.

Hi,

Yes, the very registration of the product was a nightmare for me, too. I
did it, but, I do not know how. As for semi-accessibility, you're
supposed to turn the self-defence off, although Avast does not recommend
the end user to. Why am I saying semi-accessibility? Because Avast has
never been fully accessible as far as screen readers (Jaws and NVDA) are
concerned

I don't know if the problem can be corrected with Adobe itself.  You might try PDF2TXT, a small almost utility instead of being a program and see if that corrects it.  I've had lots of trouble using the current one but I think I still have the installation file for the older one, which I find works better on a lot of P
DF files.  Or, using OCR such as available in Openbook, Kurzweil, Fine Reader, and I would think other OCR programs might solve the problem.

Automatically start NVDA after I log on to Windows checkbox unable to be checked

Thomas Stivers

 Hello all,

The three options pertaining to automatically starting NVDA appear on screen, they do not appear disabled, but they cannot be selected either in the welcome dialog or in the general preferences. This is happening on a remote computer, so I didn't do the installation myself. Is there a scenario where NVDA was installed as a portable copy or run directly from the installer file which can cause these options to be present but unusable? I did a brief search of reported issues, but I don't see anything that covers this although I could I swear I remember discussion about it some months or years ago.

For what its worth this is about installing NVDA 2018.1.1 on Windows 10.

Thank you for any assistance,

Thomas

Re: Dropbox innaccessibility again

Gene

It isn't a typo.  It is the result of the chronic and widespread practice of a lot of blind people not checking spelling of unfamiliar words and relying on speech for the spelling.  it doesn't matter what you explain or how.  If you write to a business or web site administrator or whomever in a business capacity, and misspell the name of the thing you are writing about, you lose considerable credibility and do not look competent.

And how do you know that the thought doesn't arise in the recipient, "If the person is misspelling the name to this extent, maybe the person doesn't know how to use the captcha.  If you want credibility in the sighted business and other professional worlds, spell correctly and use correct names.  A typographical error is mistyping;  This is misspelling.  and this issue goes much further.  If you don't check names to be sure the spelling is correct, for example of the person you are writing to, you might use a w at the end of a name when you should use o u g h.  and in your specific case, someone might spell Brian with a y instead of with an I or visa versa.  And the list goes on.

I wouldn't assume this is a general problem.  It may be related to the preferences problewm you have.

Unfortunately in windows 7 the dialogues do not read at all.
I've tried this on a machine with 7 home and 7 pro now with the same
result. There is nothing special about the machines, no weird software no
fiddles. It just does not work. and as all other software seems to work fine
I'm rather bemused.

I'm not sure how accessible the current version is.  I stilll use an older version.  Did you see anything about off line registration?  I'm not sure what it's called but there is another way to register and you may be able to do that.

Hi Group,

Is there any add on or perhaps some sort of technique for using the main
interface or in particular, the registration panel in the Avast Free
Anti Virus program?

I used to be able to enter the registration information every year for
the free upgrade, but something may have changed either in NVDA or Avast
to make this impossible for me this year.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Yes, the very registration of the product was a nightmare for me, too. I did it, but, I do not know how. As for semi-accessibility, you're supposed to turn the self-defence off, although Avast does not recommend the end user to. Why am I saying semi-accessibility? Because Avast has never been fully accessible as far as screen readers (Jaws and NVDA) are concerned

Hi,

This is really weird!

but it has been happening since yesterday, whenever I try to update NVDA.

The installation seems to start, because it plays the music at first, but it does not do anything or hear any sign of error.

I would like to be given some suggestions to solve the problem!

Greetings.

PDF file missing spaces

Quentin Christensen

Hi everyone,

I know I've come across this before but I just can't recall the solution.  I've got a PDF file which when I read it, parts of it read with no spaces between words (ditto copying the text out or saving to a text file).

It is something to do with how Adobe Reader interprets the spaces in files created with certain other products, but what I can't remember, is how do I fix it, please?

Regards

Quentin.

That is odd. This looks like its been run from a deferred install, ie the file was already downloaded.
I do not see that particular error her, In my log a considerable difficulty is seen removing old folders and files though and ultimately it did not reboot but had to be manually restarted after dismissing a windows cannot write to file warning. This is common on my machine so I tend to ignore it. Initializing watchdog

Re: messages disappearing from my folders in outlook

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Take the machine back to when you saw them last? However I'm not optimistic. I seem to remember this sort of thing happening in older Outlooks back when I tried to use it.
Its normally some corruption in the indexing in Outlook. Maybe there is an answer on the Microsoft Office forum?

Subject: [nvda] messages disappearing from my folders in outlook

Hi, everyone,

I don't know what happened to some of my messages that I had from other
lists that I'm on. They just suddenly disappeared. I know I didn't delete
them. I tried looking in the junk folder but they're not there. Is there
something else I can do?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Rosemarie

Well I've had no luck with aAvast. It seems their protection system stops screenreaders accessing their screens properly and if you disable it with sighted help, then its forever complaining its vulnerable.
So I gave it the bi E off my machine using avarstclean.

Hi Group,

Is there any add on or perhaps some sort of technique for using the main interface or in particular, the registration panel in the Avast Free Anti Virus program?

I used to be able to enter the registration information every year for the free upgrade, but something may have changed either in NVDA or Avast to make this impossible for me this year.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Although I would not say what I wrote was in any way techy, I do think that the person who posted about this could have phrased it less combatively, and perhaps you should not have risen to the bait as much on here. Communicating in text is not that easy as the intonation of a voice is not really conveyed.
I tend to agree with you, but I have encountered people who find it hard to understand what we might consider simple instructions due to not knowing the lingo, so to speak. Your advice, though sound, can be seen as a problem to many people I have tried to teach things to. We are not all the same and words that convey sense to one person are just not in the vocabulary of somebody else especially if that person is dealing with English if that is not their native language.

I was taught if you cannot follow instructions and you cannot keep up I'm not stoping and you will fall behind. If you cannot keep up drop the class. If you cannot learn how to follow instructions other than what a simpleton does then you should go back to computer school where you learn to cut copy and paste until you can even navigate the file explorer and use the command prompt by yourself, at least the basic stuff like cd and sudo and stuff. I'm not advanced either but I can follow techy and geeky instructions, allowly but I can do it.

Take care

To Brian first of all do you really have to put out instructions the average user can’t follow sir? Not everybody is a techie freak like you sir. To Gary. To change the voices in Red Aloud in Edge hit alt X then press enter on Read Aloud. Next tab to the button that says change voices. Their how simple is that?

I don't think it was really clear what exactly he wanted to do though.
