Re: NVDACon 2018 audio

For some reason the recordings were not yet available when I sent this mail, but the recordings are now available at https://www.nvdacon.org/past-conferences.

Re: text aloud reader

Gene

That's not practical for a document that isn't very short unless you do something like have a file read while you are sleeping or not using the computer for an extended time.  Also, why use a separate program if you are going to record in that way?  You can record your screen-reader reading a edocument.

Does Text Aloud just read or does it actually create its own recording of what is being read, allowing you to have a document recorded while using your computer for other things?

Subject: Re: [nvda] text aloud reader

I had Text Aloud on an old laptop but not on my current one. If I wanted to record the output of NVDA reading something I would use Audacity (which is free) and you can set it up so that it records the sound coming through the soundcard (what NVDA is saying). That means you can use NVDA to say all and Audacity can record it. I record NVDA doing that and then export the Audacity result as an mp3, and then use Wavepad (which I know, from previous dialogue, you also use) to chop off the initial seconds and the ending seconds as I activate the recording mode and likewise end the recording mode.

I find Audacity / Wavepad a more configurable method than I did using Text Aloud (I can't remember if Text Aloud had user dictionaries, but you do have those with NVDA so you can define pronunciations of certain words if needed ... something I use a lot!)

Hope that helps :)

Hi.
How do you use spotify with nvda?
I can't get this thing to work.
I searched for songs, and got into a table with the songs.
But not now.

Hello Robert,

It looks to me like you have Firefox open  when you are starting NVDA. I believe you generally need to start Mozilla products after the screen reader is running. Firefox versions after 59 enable a AT mode if they see a screen reader running on the system.

Hi,
Thanks Rui for your reply.
So this means that this parameter should not be unchecked if we want to hear the questions asked by this type of dialog box.
I don't find it normal.
Cheers.

It should be windows+V to focus on the notification

Or view them in action centre

Or go to control panel > auto play

To set the defaults

Hope that helps

At each Windows update, Microsoft resets my autoplay settings.

As a result, when I put a CD into the PC, instead of it automatically calling up Windows Media Player it fires off a question, asking me to choose what happens when I insert a CD (or so I am told by a sighted helper).

This is in a small black box which pops out from the right of the screen, but rapidly disappears and is not shown in the Notifications panel.

Can anyone suggest how I might focus on this pop-out before it goes, or recall it afterwards, so I can choose “play with media player” from the list of options on offer.

Hi,

Yes, that's the programme from the link you presented to me.

Well, I'm sure that there are more visual lines, for, when I arrow down, I read the status so that I am sure of the number of line I am on. That's how I know that there are more lines on the screen. The status bar is checked, and when I press the key command to read it, I'm informed of the line number.

Note:

Previous NVDA versions worked well with Ted.

It's a slightly different behaviour to say Windows notepad, but I've seen it in some other editors.  In generally NVDA should read the text at the cursor, so assuming when you press DOWN ARROW that the cursor is actually moving down by a couple of (visual) lines to after the next linebreak character, NVDA should just be reading where the cursor is.

Kind regards

Quentin.

One more thing:

When I type in Ted, I happen to press enter to go to new line, NVDA always repeats what is typed in the previous line, and then repeats what has just been typed.

In order to check whether Notepad worked fine, I filled it with some text, and I found that it worked quite well. It means that I can read text line by line when using up and down arrows.

Thankful once more,

Hello all,

A friend of mine has reported to me that his copy of NVDA (the stable release) fails to update. I think he tried to update from 2018.1 to 2018.1.1 and then to 2018.2 and each time NVDA fails to update and tells him to check the log file for details. I'm attaching the log file to this message - hope it helps to diagnose what is the problem in this case.

Re: NVDA stable release fails to update on a friend's machine

Hello Quentin,

I'll ask my friend to check if the UAC dialog is not hiding behind some other window. I know that not answering with "Yes" to that dialog will result in NVDA failing to update, because I've experienced it myself a few years ago.

And I've noticed too that sometimes NVDA fails to read the UAC dialog even with an installed copy of NVDA and the only solution in such a case (though not a permanent one) is to log off from the system and log in back again or restart it. It hasn't occurred to me recently though, so I'm guessing that it was something on Microsoft's side and it may have been fixed with one of the last cumulative updates for Windows 10.

A few people have been having trouble with the UAC dialog - the dialog which Windows pops up when you install anything - often this dialog seems to pop up behind every other window and you need to either ALT+TAB through everything, or press ALT+SHIFT+TAB to get to it.

Some users have reported that the dialog doesn't always read correctly, even on an installed copy of NVDA.  I haven't replicated that or seen a solution at this stage.

Re: NVDA stable release fails to update on a friend's machine

Quentin Christensen

Hi Kostadin,

Could you please confirm, when you run NVDA, and go to the Help - about screen, has it actually updated even though it gave an error?

The error appears to be in creating the shortcut, and the main time I've seen that, is when you are installing (or updating) on Windows 10 and have controlled folder access turned on.  Essentially, it lets NVDA install completely, but won't let it install a shortcut on the desktop (because that's a system folder).

If you have controlled folder access enabled, then your two options, are either 1) Ignore the error and create the shortcut yourself if desired, or 2) disable controlled folder access while installing NVDA.  Actually lots of programs hit this error trying to install or update with that setting enabled.  At this stage, there isn't anything we can do to work around it (the whole point of it is to protect your system folders against changes by any program).

Kind regards

Quentin.
