hmm, I too have a Braille Sense U2, I installed a driver to get it to work via usb, but I have not used it in a while. I should check it out once I reinstall NVDA on my computer.

tools/account settings, then under whatever account you're dealing with,
pick server settings. Tab and you'll eventually reach a checkbox that
says "check for new messages every". You can either uncheck it and only
check manually, or if you tab past it, you'll see an edit field. I think
the default is 10 minutes but obviously you can change it to whatever
you like. I'm not sure if the behavior of the main account governs all
other accounts, or if you can set it individually for each account, so
if you have multiple accounts that go through different servers, you
probably want to set it for each unique server.

You said that it was uninstalled.  That doesn't mean all files were removed.  The next question, which has been discussed here before but which I didn't try to remember the answer to, is what files are left when uninstalling.  It appears from the cannot overwrite a file message, that at least one file is in use.  I don't know why but such questions may help you solve the proboem.  Perhaps something wasn't fully uninstalled that should have been and Windows is keeping a file in use, perhaps because a registry entry is still present that tells it to.  In short, I suspect that completely removing the program may require dealing with such questions or, perhaps, going into safe mode and removing the extra files.

Hi, I use vitalSource Bookshelf as my primary ePUB reader with the
placeMarkers NVDA add-on, to manage bookmarks and notes for each
document.
You can use control+repag and control+avpag to move between chapters,
f6 to switch between panels, for instance, the document and navigation
bar with a tree of chapters, control+b to focus the library, control+f
to search in the book from the navigation bar, and NVDA's browse mode
gestures in each chapter.
I describe this here since unfortunately the evaluation of this reader
hasn't been posted at epubtest.org, where other apps for ePUB have
been evaluated wit NVDA. I evaluated Adobe Digital Editions (not
recommended for me), and Azardi (good for ePUB with audio or
Javascript.
A fellow member of the volunteers which test ePUB reading system,
hosted by Daisy Consortium, evaluated Kindle with NVDA.
About Edge, I have to evaluate it but I couldn't do it the previous
weekend. I will sharethe link if reviewers of Daisy Consortium post
the evaluation.
Some of the issues I find in Edge are:
1. Words are sometimes splitted in two lines, which affects pronnounciation.
2. NVDA+v doesn't work and links can't be put in a new line.
3. Notes can't be added in browse mode, but they are supported in
focus mode, which is great and required for ePUB reading systems.

First, you move to SAPI 5 in the synthesizer dialog, then activate the ok button.  Then, open the voice dialog and find the voice you want in the list and activate the ok button.

I have a new computer running Windows 8.1 and have downloaded NDVA several times and the Windows sapi5 voyce will not showup.  I also can not seem to find it in my windows.

I have also downloaded  2 of the free voices from the NDVA site and properly used the manage apps to install them and they will not appear in the list of synthesizers, as a matter of fact the ESpeak does not appear either.

Finally the menus have completely changed from just a week ago, because I had downloaded NDVA for another person and the menus completely different? Any thoughts?  Thanks so much

Windows 10 autoplay notification

Chris Mullins

Hi

I know I should have checked before posting but a correction to the details below.  The notifications display time is in Settings/Ease of Access Display section not in Other Options which no longer exists.  This is as of Windows 10 1803.

Hi

Apologies if the subject line is not the one recently on the list, I’ve deleted all the messages associated with the thread and can’t remember the actual subject text however I hope the following helps.  Someone was talking about pressing Windows+v to access the autoplay pop-up notification. And suggested it needed to be done quickly or it disappeared.  I found this on the net regarding the length of time notifications hang around which may solve the problem of accessing it before it disappears.

You control how long Windows 10 displays notifications on screen using a single drop-down menu, but it’s not an obvious one. Instead of being grouped with other notification settings, you’ll find it buried in the Windows accessibility settings. It makes sense in hindsight (arguably), but we’re not sure how anyone could be expected to think of looking there in the first place.

Click Start > Settings (or press Windows+I) to open the Settings window and then click “Ease of Access.”

settings_main

In the Ease of Access window, select the “Other options” tab and then click the “Show notifications for” drop down menu.

ease_of_access

The drop down menu lets you choose various timing options, ranging from 5 seconds to 5 minutes. Just pick how long you’d like pop up notifications to stay on screen.

set_timing

And that’s it! It’s just one little setting hidden away in a place you might never think to look for it, but hopefully it comes in handy.

Alternatively you could switch off autoplay notifications in Settings/System Notifications and Actions section then in   Settings/Devices autoplay section, set actions for different peripheral devices.

Cheers

Chris

Re: nvda installation problem

Brian's Mail list account

From the description this seems unlikely, as it did not work in the first place.
Assuming its an admin account then most people tend to only encounter issues with the UAC screen or updating when a desktop icon cannot be created, both of which are well known.

I just wonder if something else like bloatware which is often on new machines is interfering with installs. too many anti virus or security programs can cause some very odd things to happen, ie, if nvda has partially installed as you suggest, but cannot complete and the old bit cannot be stopped. I'd do a clean reboot of the machine and try then as a first step. However I have also noticed a number of new laptops seem to have dodgy sound drivers that clip the start of speech as well, though this is not the cause here from the description.
When a program is partly installed it can be a real pain to clean out the rubbish if you are not OK with delving into the diagnostics, even worse if its a screenreader and thus you have to rely on slow clunky narrator to do it!

I am greatful for any help with these items.

Certainly the menu layout has changed in that they are now laid out as property sheets making them easier to move between than the old one at a time system, but as for why Espeak does not show up, that is most odd. I'm assuming the machine has working sound on it already, so I think we need a little more info here, maybe getting a log of start up or something like that
Are you saying that no voices at all are available on windows? IE does narrator work or not?

Are you sure you don't have a copy of NVDA that is running on the logon screen?
