Reminder to Always Check Latest Version Before Reporting Problems

Richard Wells

I wanted to remind all of us, myself first and foremost to always check for the latest revision of add-ons before reporting problems. Let me give you an example.

I used one of my favorite add-ons: Clip Contents Designer for the first time after upgrading to NVDA 2018.2.1. It starting saying numbers instead of performing requested actions. I was just about to report a problem when I decided to make sure I was running the latest revision of Clip Contents Designer. Sure enough, I was running 1.0 instead of 8.0. As soon as I remedied that, life was good again.

If I, as a quality assurance specialist with more than 14 years experience can make this error in judgment, I believe this to be worth reminding myself again by writing it down and posting it here for all of us to help avoid chasing shadows when they may not be real problems.

Also, I want to express my appreciation to all of you who are smart enough to write these add-ons to increase our productivity out here. To the authors of Clip Contents Designer, I am a life-long member of your fan club!

MSSE is, for all practical purposes, the same program as the Windows 10 version of Windows Defender.  There is an earlier version of Windows Defender but that's a different program.

Hi Gene,

Does this include the Windows 7 versions?  I know that I am using Windows Defender on Windows 10 and that is rated somewhat higher than MSEE was.  Is this what you mean or is this higher rating applying to older versions as well.  The individual himself said he was using Windows 7.

Dropbox saga again

Brian's Mail list account

Well I just installed the demo of Jaws and that cannot read the dropbox preferences etc either.
So where does this leave me? Well no idea if its windows or dropbox, but as others can read it, has to be one or the other. I guess i can try reinstalling Dropbox, but if there is a winndows issue, maybe somebody intimate with accessibility apis can suggest which bit of windows might have been screwed that would make it only not read dropbox menus, oh and version 50 of Dropbox is the same as well.

My main finger to point was having to remove Avast from the machines affected using avastclear, but I can do nothing about that it was months ago.

Re: I've had it with Firefox

Hi Gene,

This whole issue with Firefox is odd, but since I have seen no complaints about Firefox sluggishness or unresponsiveness from sighted people, the issue has to be somehow related to screen reader usage and/or the way JAWS, NVDA and other screen readers interface with Firefox under very complex conditions.  I am still wondering about video card or internal video chips conflicts. I know everyone at Freedom Scientific/VFO used to get mad at me when I worked for them every time something like this would happen with a program--wherein some people had no issues and others had several issues.  I would bring up video card/chip conflicts of issues and they would yell at me that all such issues involving screen readers (in the words of the old gospel song) it was all settled long ago.  Still, I wonder!

Hi Group,

I also am having no issues with all 3 of my systems: Windows 10 64 bit;
Windows 7 64 bit and Windows 7 32 bit. Actually, the Windows 7 systems
are older and somewhat slower over all, but this does not seem to affect
Firefox. Once it launches, pages load normally and reading is decent.

Blimey, I only have 8 gigs of ram. You can with the resource monitor add on
see very clearly that Firefox is not very efficient at processor or memory
use most of the time. I have an I5 and its been unthrottled too.

Yeah I'm not. I'm on what ever was released last Tuesday or updates for the
public. It's quite fast here, but the 32 gigs of ram probably help a bit. I
woudl just  check for updates and stuff.

Have you tried creating a portable version on the hard drive and using that just to see. i fully realise that some things are not readable with a portable version but it might point to where the issue is. If it is a copy made from the one that fails, assuming of course it works enough to allow you to do this, then a finger might point to the issue rather better.

Subject: [nvda] Can't uise the NVDA menus

Hello,

I am using an Acer Swift 3 notebook with Windows 10 home and NVDA 2017.1.1. Either the configuration or NVDA itself has
become corrupted. Many menu items don't work and it is delivering messages about no headings at Level 1. I can't reset
it to factory defaults, assuming that works, because it would go to no Braille and I couldn't use the machine at all.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

Yes in some respects it is, though I have also noticed in the latest masters that bringing up open and save dialogues does seem to often be a bit sluggish or not announce things all the time. Also read all in some of the notepad alternatives seems to stop for no apparent reason in some files. of course these effects might well be due to the files, but its hard sometimes to see the wood for the trees.

Re: I've had it with Firefox

Yes. I wonder idiots the problem with the idle speed of the processor in certain hardware. most people using desktops do tend to at least try to speed up idle mode, but if you use a laptop you may want to balance it with battery usage. Also I have the feeling that the method Microsoft use in both 7 and 10 to tell whether to speed up the cores is flawed as nvda runs as a 32 bit process and hence seemingly in one core only.
it could well be that this is not taken into consideration fully when running other software. Interesting that you say a 32 bit 7 machine is still OK though.
I do see quite a few core frozen in stack issues in nvda logs but have come to tend to ignore them, but maybe they are significant.

It would be fascinating if anyone, and I do mean anyone, could come up with a technique that would definitively diagnose what is occurring "under the hood" that makes a given version of any particular web browser slow on one system while it flies on another that is its hardware twin (or even relatively similar hardware).

I use both Firefox and Chrome, as do many of my clients and students, and in general their behaviors on a specific computer are very similar.

Hi Group,

I also am having no issues with all 3 of my systems: Windows 10 64 bit;
Windows 7 64 bit and Windows 7 32 bit. Actually, the Windows 7 systems
are older and somewhat slower over all, but this does not seem to affect
Firefox. Once it launches, pages load normally and reading is decent.

Don't be too upset, I've seen that as well, but people tell me win 10 with certain builds and certain other software running can do this.
I found it a lot more when I had firefox even in 7. However it was not a restart, just a gradual grind to a halt situation. If you could catch it and log off the user and back in it was back to normal again as if some mega cache was filling up the virtual disc space.

Makes me wonder whether or not certain FF addons are causing problems.
Might those who are having problems try going into FF w/safe mode on,
ie, instead of pressing enter on the desktop shortcut press
shift-enter & see if it makes any difference?

Having said that, I'm having some sort of difficulty which, when I
have a few FF windows open, the computer sometimes just restarts. I'm
not seeing anything in the logs that's helpful. I'm gonna have to look
further. Torques me off, cuz I've got lots of stuff going on right
now.

If you have at least 12 gig of ram and at least an I5 6 gig processor, certainly. It looks to me like Firefox has sharp peaks in its resource use, whereas other browsers do not act this way.
Maybe the need a Firefox lite version maybe based on what Waterfox has done.

How much memory do you have in your system? I'm running a 3.7ghz Core i3, total of 12MB available, and Windows 10 64. Othre than a little lag when loading a page into Browse Mode, no new issues with V60 of Firefox. One annoying issue I've always had with FF is some sites, such as Pizzahut.com require setting Page Styles to None in order for all links to be recognized by NVDA. There may be workarounds for this, just not aware of them. I still prefer the Fox over Edge or Internet Exploder.

How slow is it for you? You are running a Mac right? Have you ran on an actual PC 64 bit running WIN 10?

with firefox. Every site is slowith NVDa even the mobile FB site. I bit the bullet and downloaded Waterfox. Seems to work much better. May I’ll wait ti FF 70 and see how fast that will be. So long FF. Me and WF and Edge are good buddies.
