Re: Question regarding NVDA and speaking message columns in Outlook

Cristóbal

Jus to follow up to this. Turns out, My office updates were disabled resulting me being on an older version of Outlook. Once I enabled it and updated my Office products, this issue of NVDA announcing before every message “No associated draft” went away. It seems it was a known issue with NVDA.

Was this done by reducing the number of columns in your Outlook view? In JAWS the column that indicates an attachment is present in a message is only spoken when there is actually an attachment. Also, the status column is not spoken for messages that have been read and no other action has occurred on the message.

Thanks,

Re: Working with Macros in Excel Spreadsheets?

Hi,
To open combo boxes, you need to use Alt + Down Arrow. On my computer, once I hit Enter to make a selection, NVDA stops talking. The easiest way to get it to behave properly is to maximize the sheet. This happens for me after every use of an Excel dropdown. It has happened for a very long time.

Hi all. Just trying to figure something out... in a workbook I'm reading for a menu guide for an audio device, there are combo boxes to select the different menus which I want to be displayed as tables.
However when I make my selections, even though the combo boxes are accurately reflecting my changes, the tables don't switch and stay at defaults. Is there something I am missing? Or is there another program I can use to accomplish other than excel 2016? The document is below just for reference in case someone wants to see what I mean. Thanks!

Since you are using Win 10, you won't get that ugly voice! It will
default to a Windows One Core voice and these are very understandable.
Only thing is they can't be sped up very much as most all the more
natural sounding voices just fall apart and become like jibberish and
not understandable if you speed them up very much. But you'll like the
One Core voice very much better than the eSpeak. At least, that's true
for myself anyhow.

Re: antivirus?

Gene

I'm not hopeful you'll get anywhere, but if Avast isn't sufficiently accessible to let you conduct the scan you want, you might tell that to the company and ask if they will give you a more useable version of the program as a blind person.  I knew there was a way to scan using Avast from the command line.  But when I checked now, I found it was only available in the pro or paid for version.  That means that their paid for version may be accessible enough for you to use while the free version isn't.  Whether they will provide you with a version you can use is anybodies guess.  But in an environment of ever-decreasing numbers of accessible antivirus programs, you might want to find out.

Hi

Have you already got a copy of nvda already? if not you will need to get a copy from http://www.nvaccess.org

It can be found under the downloads section.

To get into the preferences of NVDA after it has been started it is the nvda key + letter N then arrow down to help and a sub menu will come off it that is where you will find the user manual.

If nvda is not running it is the alt key +ctrl key + the letter N to start your copy of nvda.

To quit your copy of nvda it is the nvda key + letter q.

Where i refer to the nvda key this is a modifier key and can be the insert key, the extended insert key or the caps lock key.

You would use what ever one you chose to say quit nvda for example insert key + letter Q

For windows 10 users now the default voice i think is set to windows one core voices.

Otherwise earlier than that is e speak which i use all the time.

Just to give you the heads up also when you go into the preferences part of nvda then arrow right it will now take you into the settings. Here you can arrow down and up these sections.

To go into any of the sections use the tab key and tab through each part of that section. You will see what i mean.

You can also use other sapi 4 and 5 voices along if you want to pay for either vocaliser or eloquence voice not charged by nvaccess.

If you grab it from the website after it has been downloaded and the file clicked on and started it has a talking installer. You will need to agree to the documentation then after that it will give you 3 options one to install to your pc, the second to make a portable copy and the third to run as a temp copy pick the first option and follow directions to install it to your pc.

If a UAC screen comes up for security use the alt key + letter Y to allow nvda to be installed to your pc.

I do have other material on how to use nvda on my website if you are interested but is only for a desk top user both in audio and written.

there is another way to get NvDA up and running quickly, especially on a new system where you just want to get your favorite stuff going without hastle... You can get the latest NVDA along with other stuff you may want by making a custom installer and running it. And you can do this very easily by going to   www.ninite.com   ... Usually when I get a new computer to get stuff up and going quickly I just head over to ninite.com ... I use the checkboxes and the make ninite installer link then i run the tiny ninite installer, and the ninite installer heads out and grabs everything i requested. and then it installs it all for me, i don't have to go through installer wizards or anything like that. i just sit back and wait for ninite to do its stuff. i can tell when it's installing NVDA because I hear the NVDA sounds. Then when its done if i remember right it starts NVDA up for me. It's a nice quick accessible way to grab your favorite stuff and have it installed all in one go.

I just checked and they do not seem to work. I opened a .dxb file and
appeared in computer braille although Duxbury is set to import files
in UEB BANA. Interestingly, a document in .docx opened in UEB BANA. I
tried the same thing with Jaws and the .dxb file opened in UEB BANA

Obviously both screen readers have some issues need fixing.

Sounds like you didn't have Service Pack 1 installed before trying to install
NVDA.

Definitely worth a new issue then. it might be something has changed but not needing them I'd not know what the situation is.

I just checked and they do not seem to work. I opened a .dxb file and
appeared in computer braille although Duxbury is set to import files
in UEB BANA. Interestingly, a document in .docx opened in UEB BANA. I
tried the same thing with Jaws and the .dxb file opened in UEB BANA
whereas the word document opened in uncontracted braille.
Obviously both screen readers have some issues need fixing.
I am taking proofreading lessons and this issue is a matter of concern to me.

Really? I am sure every CD I've got of 7 worked straight away with nvda and after about a day of updates.
Not aware that anything is broken seriously.
Might be worth asking the devs if you get a problem as its certainly not the rule.

Well on a day to day basis I only use windows 7, and as long as its service
pack 1, then the latest nvda and the snaps work.
I notice that statistically Windows 7 is still on more machines than
windows 10 of any flavour. Something like 47 percent in fact, so if nvda did
not work there would be a lot of upset folk I'd imagine!
I think somebody should be a little more clear though and put the link to
the latest version in a message here from time to time.

Hi,

If it is RTM (build 7600), it'll be 2017.3, otherwise latest current
release.

Cheers,

Joseph
