Re: pauses after punctuation and sentence end in different speech synthesizers

Giles Turnbull

I tried to find a way to do this not too long ago. I sometimes use NVDA to perform poetry I've written at my poetry readings, but the answers I received were that the length of pauses is not controlable via NVDA, it is dependent on whichever voice you are using.

You basically have the length of a comma and the length of a full stop / period, and that's it. I do not detect any difference in the length of pause for a semicolon compared to a comma. There is no way to use two full stops to get a double length pause, nor to combine a comma with a full stop to get like a full stop and a half of pausing! Likewise, with my preferred poetry performance voice, Hazel (Microsoft SAPI5) there is no raised intonation to indicate a question mark, where in other voices (Microsoft Zira, for example) the question mark is clearly audible.

I used to own a pair of Orcam glasses and ran into the same problem with the length of pauses with that system. Just the comma / semicolon and the full stop were the only two pauses. Dashes, m-dashes and n-dashes produce no pause at all in any of the voices I've tried.

One thing that made me smile was that I'm scheduled to read in Torquay, south England, in October and on the flyers my event is listed as Giles and Hazel ... maybe I can make a case for Hazel getting an appearance fee too ;)

Sorry not to have better news on the pausing question. I remain hopeful that one day a solution will be found for this, but I think it lies in the hands of the creators of the different voices.

How Do I Efficiently Navigate Websites Using Dynamic onMouseOver Menus with NVDA?

Kenny <kwashingtonbox@...>

Good day,

I frequent several websites that use this annoying dynamic onMouseOver menu system to reach various sub sections of their site.

Meaning you have a bunch of properly tagged graphics or text placed horizontally along the top of the page. Hover the mouse over one and a menu of options would dynamically appear vertically beneath it. Then you navigate the mouse cursor to one, and left click it. You'll then be taken to the associated sub section.

Is there an efficient way of navigating such dynamic menus using NVDA Version: alpha-15495,f2cc115c? I use Google Chrome and MS Edge as my web browser.

Thanks.

Re: nvda + firefox has bug about donamically combo box?

Try running the page with the Firefox console visible and see if it generates any errors. To open the Firefox console use control-shift-K or open the tools menu and go to web authoring.

The Firefox console uses a live region, so NVDA should speak any updates in the consule while it is visible.

I find that sometimes buttons and elements are not clickable in m.facebook.com and that the tab key is not always responding normally.
F.e. if you click on a friend and wants him or her to be defriended, you can’t find that item or click the friend or follow button. I have already changed some settings like adding some accessibility tools to read webpages with the arrow keys and disabled the hardware accelerators which often is advised when working with screenreaders.

pauses after punctuation and sentence end in different speech synthesizers

Akshaya Choudhary

I have observed, Espeak and Eloquence provide a very brief pause after punctuation and sentence break, when compared to other synthesizers. Even the pause after pressing command keys is shorter. For example, while navigating a simple list menu with arrow keys, NVDA would say, DOWN ARROW, then it would speak the next item after a very brief pause. Although, I find this very useful for navigating around different applications, but for serious study of a document, it is annoying. For this purpose i prefer to use SAPI 5.
-- While reading  large documents it is helpful to have slightly longer pauses, it helps you understand the text better, which is exactly the role of punctuation. Especially while reading literary works.
Is there a feature in NVDA which could let us control the duration of the pause,  like we can do with speed and pitch?

Sociohack

Introducing Windows 10 Technologies Preview (NVDA try build) version 1807

Hi all,

I’m delighted to announce the availability of Windows 10 Technologies Preview version 1807. This NVDA try build includes latest technologies from Windows 10, as well as needed pull requests for various Windows 10 features.

Background: with changes to release process from NV Access announced in July 2018, next branch is no more. This branch included several pull requests on Windows 10 features, including emoji panel support, Edge improvements and others.

To bring some of these features back for public testing, and to prove that NVDA community does care about Windows 10 development, I’ll release Windows 10 Technologies Preview on a regular basis. These previews are designed to gather early feedback on NVDA’s compatibility with various Windows 10 features and apps, as well as serving as a testbed for incorporating features from Windows 10 App Essentials add-on into NVDA core itself. As such, these try builds are based on master branch with several pull request branches added (by the way, this is more of a resurrection, as I did a similar thing back in 2016 when I released try builds compatible with Windows 10 Version 1607/Anniversary Update).

As of Version 1807 (build 15530), the following features are ready for feedback:

  • Latest alpha build features.
  • Built-in support for modern keyboard, including emoji panel, hardware keyboard input suggestions, cloud clipboard paste, and dictation (Windows+H).
  • Announcing XAML tool tips.
  • In Microsoft Edge, NVDA recognizes aria-roledescription and aria-role=alert, as well announcing notifications such as reading view availability and page load progress.
  • Detecting and announcing dialogs using UIA IsDialog property found in Redstone 5 builds.
  • Detection of IUIAutomation6 interface.

Try build link:

https://ci.appveyor.com/api/buildjobs/1me2ffjvb3j9qi5b/artifacts/output%2Fnvda_snapshot_try-w10-15530%2C16facaf1.exe

IMPORTANT: this is NOT a try build from NV Access. You are welcome to install it, but it may not support update checks (I recommend using this build as a portable copy).

If you have any feedback regarding this build (suggestions, bug reports, questions, comments, concerns and what not), please email me privately.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

Thunderbird is my exclusive email client...and has been for years now.
It's always one that I recommend, and recommend highly, to anyone using a screen reader who doesn't already have Outlook, and a great many don't.

It's also accessible almost to a fault (though rearranging the order of the columns displayed in your various folders can be a big PITA, but since it's generally a "one and done" sort of thing that's a minor issue, in my opinion).

hi,
The sound volume is fine, as it comes through the speakers rather than the headset.

Try looking in the task tray under the speaker setting for the sound mixer. You can set the sound for programs there and see if it is mued.

hi,

I have selected it in the synthesizer dialogue, and speech still won't come through  though normal sounds do, including narrator.

Have you tried selecting the headset in the speech preferences under "Speech Output?"
