switching keyboard language/was/Re: [nvda] bookmarks in firefox
Laurie Mehta
This post mentions switching keyboard language in Win10 being easy. It's posted on a thread about something else, though, and I have not seen a thread with subject line regarding keyboard language switching.
So, I am wondering-- How does someone switch keyboard language (in Win10 or otherwise)? It would be useful to know this so that one could switch back if an unintended change was made. Thanks! -LM -------------------------------------------- Quoting original message, Fri, 7/20/18: Subject: Re: [nvda] bookmarks in firefox I am a little worried though that switching keyboard languages is so easy to do in windows 10, this looks like a disaster for some coming along. Its not that its not easy to fix, but that many people do not know it can occur this way since it seems a little too simple and is not what has been happening in windows before. Brian

Yeah, that’s a false equivalency. Not even remotely close.

I don’t know but I feel that making someone use a different screen reader is like making a cane user use a guide dog or a paralyized person use a non-powered wheel chair when they have always used a wheel chair.
The only thing I can do with JAWS is use my typical windows keyboard short-cuts that I have know since the switch from DOS.

That's against the law here fortunately. Employers have to take your preference into consideration in the accommodation process. Fortunately NVDA plays much better ball on old systems than jaws does and I've had prospective employers tell me they prefer it after comparing the two. Employers aren't required to do what you tell them to do. If I walked into a shop that already had jaws I couldn't expect them to replace it with NVDA. That's never happened yet though. I would really like to see more languages added to eloquence, lots more, such as Norwegian, Danish, hebrew, and the other ones that espeak supports, but added into eloquence. But I don't think that will happen.

Re: possible eloquence solution

the only thing I can think of that may allow a modern sapi5 keynote gold software to be built, would be if someone has a brailleNote apex or brailleNote classic and could extract the firmware, with an eProm chip extractor, possibly.
|
|
Re: possible eloquence solution
Josh Kennedy
BUT IF KEYNOTE GOLD WERE RELEASED FOR WINDOWS TOMORROW, AND IF SAPI5 KEYNOTE GOLD COST $40 FOR ALL LANGUAGES I would buy it tomorrow! but again, unless I am mistaken, the source code for keynote gold is lost, and the people who work at humanware now, are not the same ones who worked there in the days of keynote gold multimedia sales.

Re: possible eloquence solution
Josh Kennedy
you can have eloquence speak for free sort of, anyway, by getting an eloquence speak window demo app, and then putting text into it, then making it speak or saving as wav file. it won't work with screen readers but you can make eloquence read text for you. I think those are on the internet archive somewhere as public software.

|
Re: possible eloquence solution
Josh Kennedy
and i guess that there is no possible way to bring back keynote gold, because as far as i know the source code for that synth is lost. all i have is keynote gold multimedia software demo and keysoft demo running inside a windows3.1 virtual machine.

Not entirely. That page seems to slow down my computer so wondered if a sighted person might see some useless animation or something on it. Something is misbehaving.

On running firefox I find that there is that youtube thing on the screen, and somewhere about half way through loading the whole computer is slowed down hugely until it grinds to a halt. I suspect some terrible script at play and it could well also be the cause for the non loading of the google part as well if the machine simply is slowed down so much it misses the response from the site. Certainly on an I5 with 8 gig of ram and an ssd drive this performance is very unusual on the web.

Speaking of which, I downloaded off the page Joseph gave, and it installed version 1.0, thus when I went to install it, NVDAreported that version 1.0 was already installed, asking if I wanted to install it anyway? I wonder then what's the new version, and is it available from the Stable download option?

Unfortunately it was quite slow and as I said did make pasting into word often complain with a low memory error but in fact the paste did work. Anyway, I pushed off from the thread and to be honest I have this little rule called junk which I update from time to time that throws threads that have outlived their purpose into my junk folder! I was rather interested in what you mean about being part of windows 10 or something though. If we consider recent figures of windows usage published it seems that windows 7 still has 47 percent of the market, mainly due to corporate use and there are many here who use it. Hi, I'm using the beta version of ff. I've downloaded a portible version of waterfox, loaded the page, and got the same thing. Note: I've had this laptop for 7 years, so that's why I'm
thinking it could be the problem.

Try disabling the addons you have installed and see what happens after that A quick way to do this is to go to the help menu and select restart with addons disabled See if the page loads after that
