if i want to know whether unknown item is link or not, just i press nvda tab.
it also announces discription of the link for me.

Hi David,

I foresee a potential short-term confusion, so I'll try my best to explain

what's going on with updates:

NVDA has just one version: latest stable. There are more builds than latest

stable, but for now, you don't have to worry about that. In short, there's

no need to worry about keeping multiple versions (unless you chose to have

multiple portable copies), and in case of installed version, one and only

one version will be in use at a time.

If you check for an NVDA update today, you'll either get:

* 2017.3: if you have Windows 7 original build (7600).

* 2018.2.1: if you have Windows7 SP1 (build 7601).

To check which Windows 7 build you have, open Start, type "winver" (without

quotes), and press Enter. If About Windows dialog says you have build 7601,

then you can use 2018 releases.

There are so many changes between whichever 2016 version you've got and

2018.2.1. Some of these changes may have impact on how you view browse mode

elements, hence we advised using 2018.2.1 before continuing.

Cheers,

Joseph

Yes button will find buttons with letter b, but as has been said before there does seem to be some strange web designers out there who make links look like buttons for their own daft reasons.
I also hat the submenus we often see, some trigger focus mode and tend to be like a kind of combo box, while others are just lists that appear on a clickable.

Trying to figure them out especially when not constant on a site can be very irritating, almost as bad as those dynamic combo boxes that jump out sometimes other times not till you hit something. its all ignorance of how a blind user uses their site I imagine, and laziness and a team of people maintaining the site with no hard and fast conventions on how the house style wants it to be.

You would think a button visually would look like a button, however, I believe they may be depicted as square or other shapes.

Of course with speech output, unless a button says Octagonal red button, you do not know its visual shape or color.

My Bank likes to say click the big green button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

I guess I can get the whereabouts of a button or link, however I have to go hunting for it.

First letter navigation for links makes finding the right likened a snap.

I'm not sure if the forcing of focus mode can be done. I seem to recall playing with the options and managed to get the opposite, ie brows mode on all the time unless you made it go into focus mode, but not the other way around, at least in web pages. it is i think different in Word.

Hello NVDA community, I'm a new user, and this is my very first post.

I have been using NVDA with ZoomText for the past few weeks; for things like
writing software, NVDA has much better pronunciation control, especially for
symbols and punctuation. Thanks to those who created and help to support
NVDA.

Happily, NVDA coexist very well with ZT.

Questions:

* For some applications, ZT's speech works better for me, so for those I put
NVDA into sleep mode.

How, in a NVDA configuration profile can I specify "sleep mode"?

I found the folder with the config files, so I could edit them directly if
needed.

Next question:

In Firefox, NVDA would be better for me if always in focus mode.

How can I put NVDA into focus mode and ensure it stays there?

One more question please:

The voice I'm using (TruVoice) is spelling-out any string that is
all-capitals (i.e. acronyms) instead of pronouncing as single words. It
does not do this with other applications, so I think it's because of NVDA.
How can I get it to pronounce all-caps-strings as words?

Cheers, Larry S

Re: SleepMode default per application.

Yes but if an app has more than one exe,you need one for each one. Also i notice that if that software uses explorer for anything speech will come back as well, or at least that seems to be what is happening.

I just found in the NVDA developers guide
(https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/developerGuide.html) how
to put specific applications int sleep mode and got it to work.

The following code can be copied and pasted in to a text file, then saved in
the appModules directory with the name of the application you wish to enable
sleep mode for. As always, the file must have a .py extension.

--- start ---

import appModuleHandler

class AppModule(appModuleHandler.AppModule):

sleepMode = True

--- end ---

Add-on Updater: a proof of concept add-on to check for, download, and apply add-on updates

Hi all,

I’m delighted to announce the release of the source code form of Add-on Updater, a proof of concept add-on that lets you check for, download, and apply add-on updates.

Background: at the moment NVDA does not have ability to check for updates to community add-ons. Although some add-ons do have this built in (WeatherPlus, for example), it would be better to let NVDA itself take care of this.

How Add-on Updater works: basically, I have generalized my own add-on update code from StationPlaylist Studio and Windows 10 App Essentials add-ons to include checking for updates for add-ons hosted on community add-ons website (addons.nvda-project.org). This is similar in concept to NVDA Store add-on (hosted on French NVDA website) with the following differences:

  • Tested and proven: the code in Add-on Updater (mine) has been tested and proven to be a solid add-on update client for a while.
  • Ready for inclusion in NVDA Core: my code uses same standards and coding style as rest of NVDA, thus it is ready for inclusion into NVDA screen reader.
  • Based on an existing pull request: the code is powered by a pull request regarding add-on updates, so it can be used to validate this work more broadly.
  • Integrated into NVDA menu: Add-on Updater will add a new item in NVDA tools menu to let you check for add-on updates.

Future work:

  • Simulating various update fetching mechanisms: although the current add-on code relies on server infrastructure located on community add-ons website (a PHP file), it is ready to work with other update fetching methods, including JSON (Javascript Object Notation)+database+REST API.
  • Automatically check for add-on updates at startup: similar to NVDA’s own update mechanism, add-on updates will be checked every 24 hours if told to do so (not implemented yet, although foundation has been laid).
  • Selective add-on updates: you’ll be able to check which add-on to update when prompted to do so (this requires implementation of accessible check list box, which is being worked on by a third-party NVDA developer).

Limitations:

  • Not all add-ons hosted on add-ons server will be updated via this add-on. Specifically, if an add-on provides its own update check mechanism, they will be ignored by this add-on.
  • Only manual add-on update check is available at the moment.
  • Add-ons hosted on places other than community add-ons website won’t be consulted.

Relevant NVDA issue:

https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/3208

Add-on Updater source code:

https://github.com/josephsl/addonUpdater

I’ll release a development version of this add-on once add-on review passes.

IMPORTANT: this proof of concept add-on will be discontinued the day a stable version of NVDA that provides add-on update checking facility is released.

Cheers,

Joseph
