Re: Initial Skype for desktop 8 feedback

I boycotted skype since Microsoft took over.  I found the "New Skype" more of a problem than a joy, so I ditched it.  Anyway, there are a lot more Messaging apps these days, and Skype can be skipped for other more usable choices in my opinion.

A lot of these sorts of problems could be avoided if companies would properly beta test accessibility before foisting inferior new versions on blind people as production programs.  I don't go around crying discrimination, but this sort of thing, releasing an improperly evaluated version and making blind users responsible for alerting companies about problems, then having companies take months or longer to correct problems, is blatantly discriminatory.  If proper evaluation and beta testing is done in general, it should extend to accessibility.  I guess separate is not equal isn't supposed to extend to blind people.

Hmph, its obvious that skype 7 is more accessible and usable and less
crappy than skype 8 I do hope they fix it.

In the mean time I may have to get chrome and use hangouts or whats app
or something.

Hello list,

So, some initial feedback after updating to Skype 8.x

Muscle memory issues with the new keystrokes aside which are always going to
take a bit getting used to, I’m finding certain aspects to be quite
frustrating. I’ve already written Microsoft about some of this via the
feedback option in the app as well as on Twitter.

Anyway, the immediate thing is that with this updated version, there doesn’t
seem to be any means to have the Skype ringer alert go to a separate audio
source like external or PC speakers. There’s only one option for speakers
which if you’re using a headset, which I’m pretty sure most if not all of us
are using is the only viable option. More so for those of us who have a paid
number. The end result is that when you get an incoming call, the ringer
quite easily drowns out anything Jaws (in my case) may say. I don’t use the
audio ducking feature as I find it to be too distracting. One can go into
the speaker settings in Skype and lower the volume or the speaker settings
in Windows 10 to lower Skype volume, but all that accomplishes is that in
addition to the ringer being lowered, the call audio is lowered as well.
Also, I’ve already twice missed an incoming call because I took my headset
off for this or that reason and didn’t hear the ringer alert fast enough
through the headset to put it back on and get to the Skype window in time to
pick up.

I had mentioned previously that the hotkeys also no longer to appear to be
universal. Indeed, this is the case. So now, when you get an incoming call,
you have to scramble to the Skype window since at least for me, I’m not
taken there automatically and if I’m in a different virtual desktop, the
taskbar short cut win key plus X, Y or Z won’t work and try to listen to
figure out if I’m finally in the Skype window which again, as described
previously, isn’t as easy since the ringer is drowning everything else out.
The few times I’ve had a chance to take an incoming call and used the
control plus shift plus P command, Skype actually initiates an outgoing call
as well as answering the incoming call. This . . . has proven to be
problematic to say the least.

More than once already, I’ve found myself trying to orientate myself on the
Skype screen to maybe tab to the answer button instead of using the hotkey
to avoid this issue with answering/making a duel call, but so far, I haven’t
been able to access the answer/accept call button in time.

This leads me into the other issue. I so far have not been able to find any
of the telephone settings for Skype. Settings in Skype appear to be super
basic. Nothing however for voicemail greeting, managing call forwarding and
or ringer time. I know I can probably if need be access some of these
features via the Skype web account, but talk about a needless step
backwards.

One other thing for Jaws users (I don’t use NVDA enough to know how the
dictionary manager works), I had a bunch of saved entries for phone numbers
to speak this or that clinic. It seems that the Skype app is Chrome based
so, they didn’t port over. I’m sure I can go into my Jaws settings and try
and play around with changing a dictionary manager file association, but
again, just another inconvenience.

IN broad terms, the app all in all seems accessible and navigating around
like a webpage is easy enough, but it lacks some serious functionality.

It is much easier to make calls, but receiving/answering… it’s still rough
to say the least.

Enhanced Touch Gestures 18.08 released #addonrelease

Hi all,

Enhanced Touch Gestures 18.08 is now available:

https://github.com/josephsl/enhancedTouchGestures/releases/tag/18.08

At the moment this update isn’t showing up via Add-on Updater due to the fact that add-on server has failed to update its files list on time. In the meantime, this version adds a compatibility layer to support future NVDA releases, including 2018.3.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: adding a regular expression dictionary entry

Giles,

I'm tired, and I just realized that you probably do want to hear the page number read.  Use this regular expression if that's the case:  /\.+\s|\.*/g

Re: adding a regular expression dictionary entry

Giles,

Try the following as the match string:    /\.+\s|\.*\d+/g

and the replacement should be nothing.  This should cover either a straight line of periods with no intervening spaces embedded, or if there are spaces embedded, followed by any number of digits afterward.

Word does some funny things with documents sometimes.  Try Cearbhall's suggestion of alt+tabbing away and back.  If that doesn't help, let us know.  If you would like, you are most welcome to email the document directly to me at info@... and I'd be happy to have a look.

Kind regards

ccleaner

Hi.

Well ccleaner support finally got back to me and aparently will pass my message on to the appropriate people.

I got someone that obviously was able to confirm my issue, and seemed to be genuinely concerned about it.

Now weather that translates into anything we will have to see.

Meanwhile www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds is where you go to get ccleaner

There is a portable installer and a slim installer.

I would stay with portable right now though, there is no reason to even bother with installing it at this point.

Lets hope that ccleaner actually does become more accessible.

Meanwhile the ini file is what we must use right now.

At least it means unless they change something fundermental in the portable, in theory we will never have to touch the main control panel again!

As long as everyone uses the ini file I have for basic opperations we can continue for now as we are.

It did take over a month well round a month for them to get back, though so who knows.

The support person, was also concerned on the avast installing issue, and said they could concidder taking it out completely or have it as opt in even saying they may simply get rid of all offers in installers at least.

I do realise that this could be something of a step up.

I then pushed the message about the accessibility of avast.

If I get a responce to that that is faverable, my next plan is to push for some sort of ccleaner home licence, where we pay 10-20 bucks for basic protection as an optional thing or just do that for the basics.

That would include on demand anything, no monitering, nothing, I do realise by removing all the offers etc we can't have things for free but I'd pay 10-20 bucks so I can get the add free version, a 1 time payment, its true I won't get all the subscriptions for this that or another, but if I could buy ccleaner without the monitoring and such I would gladly do it.

Re: nvda and microsoft word

Cearbhall O'Meadhra

Lisa,

I sometimes find that NVDA will not read a word document when I take the write protect off it. I then press alt-tab to move the focus away from the Word screen and then alt-tab back to the Word document again and then it does read it after a bit of a pause (literally milliseconds!). Have you tried that?

All the best,

Well if its written weirdly, the easiest way to handle it I am assuming its not your document, is save the file to another file using the default word format and try again.

If that doesn't select all with control a and do a control c and transfer it into another blank word document, save that document as another document and then handle it that way, if its yours I am not sure.

adding a regular expression dictionary entry

Giles Turnbull

can anybody tell me waht regular expression could be used to stop page numbers in a table of contents from being preceded by a variable number of dots?

For example, I'm reading a book  reader manual and it has this:
UNPACKING THE PLAYER .................................................................................................... 8

which makes me feel like I'm being repeatedly shot by a semi automatic pistol! (I have a period specified in my dictionary to be spoken as “dot”)

I don't have much knowledge about regular expressions so don't know how or whether this can be done, so would welcome any suggestions or solutions! :)

Thanks,

Giles

Re: question about nitro pdf

I wouldn't bother to be honest, adobe acrobat dc will work well enough for text conversion and it does read them to.

Sure its a bit bloated now but with the modern systems its fine.

At least they keep the offline non cloud pdf reader about.

And at least I can get access to the tools from adobe ftp site.

One thing I have is cutepdf writer on here which is a nice printer, you can make emails into pdfs and it doesn't save them as an image either so that works, you need ghostscript loaded from that site I got the latest version and it has some apple software for brousing things like forms installed on your system as an extra but really thats about it.

True there is an editor but its not like I will be doing that.

The reason for me to use a pdf printer is so I can send the pdf at an eprint enabled device from hp my aunt has because the software is inaccessible to configure eprint and I can only send attachments not just messages at it so its a secondary step but its ok.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide,

Jessica
