hi. I was reading with interest the thread on this. I'm just wondering
what it's considered though, as in our looking at cutting the cord we
never came across this one. We no longer have a DVR , so I'm thinking
it may be good for that. If you have cable channels, will it pick
those up? Also, it says it's free, so is there a catch maybe watching
ads as you do with the free version of tunein radio?

Add-on Updater and Screen Curtain: updated with top requested features

Hi everyone,

I’m delighted to announce the immediate release of updates to Add-on Updater and Screen Curtain. Note that these add-ons are proof of concept (prototype) add-ons and should be used to provide feedback to people developing these feature in NVDA Core:

  • Add-on Updater (NVDA Core issue 3208): Joseph Lee
  • Screen Curtain (NVDA Core issue 7857): Leonard de Ruijter/Babbage B.V.

In case of Add-on Updater, today’s build includes work from checkable list (NVDA issue 7491), thus serving as a field test of that issue. If you have any comments on checkable list, please send them to Leonard.

To check for add-on updates:

  1. If you have Add-on Updater installed, go to NVDA menu/Tools/Check for add-on updates.
  2. If you don’t have Add-on Updater, go to community add-ons website and install Add-on Updater.
  3. Due to addition of Screen Curtain in “add-ons under development” category, you’ll need to check for add-on updates a second time to update Screen Curtain.

Changelog:

Add-on Updater:

  • When new add-on updates appear, the first entry will be selected and announced automatically.
  • Added ability to exclude add-ons from being updated. You can configure this by going to NVDA menu/Preferences/Settings/Add-on Updater panel. From “do not update add-ons” checkable list box, check add-ons you do not want Add-on Updater to update. This was requested by an add-on author.

Screen Curtain:

  • Added a check to make sure magnification wrapper can be imported.
  • Added an unassigned gesture to toggle screen curtain.
  • Added a toggle menu item in Tools that shows state of Screen Curtain.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Joseph

This is a strange situation. I have  no problems here with Settings with  NVDA, Narrator, and Jaws2018.

I am using 64 bit Windows 10 18.03

Latest stable version of NVDA and Narrator. I updated Win 10 App Essentials today.

There therefore appears to be something on Steve’s machine and others which is triggering this problem.

I have  sympathy as there are  other aspects of my Win 10 setup which do not work as they should. I cannot for example ever get goldwqave to load properly.

Re: Force Focus Mode?

Larry Silvermintz <silvermintz@...>

I’m partially-sighted as are many people, so I am using NVDA with ZoomText.  and only in focus-mode can you use vital Accessibility features of Firefox, such as  “Search for text when you start typing”.  Also, the text highlighting doesn’t work correctly when not in focus mode.

It would be most valuable to have an add-on to force focus mode if NVDA really can’t currently do it.

What are the possibilities?

Larry

As Simone said, there isn't currently a way to do this.  Perhaps a good question to follow up with is, why do you want to?  Either there might be another way to accomplish what you need, or, of course if there is a good reason to do this, it could be something to consider adding.

Kind regards

Well, could you create your own Louis translation table? I guess that is a bit of overkill.

Braille UNICODE characters and voice reading.

Hello,

If a web site or word document is using the UNICODE characters for Braille, How does NVDA treat these, does reverse translation occur and then have the equivalent words spoken, are they represented on the braille display but not on the speech output?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Hi Steve, I have no idea why this should be so, but on this machine, 64-bit home version 1803, the Settings app is working great. I don’t have to wait. As soon as I hit windows I, everything works and speaks as it should.

HelloSteve,

Yes, I am on the latest Windows version, however, I just checked and I am using the version of NVDA previous to the latest, I will update at some point, but everything I want is working at the moment, so I will wait a bit.

Even more confusing. JAWS works fine for me, I'm on JAWS 2018.

What version of JAWS are you on? If 2018, you should update to the July build, then I suspect it will work.

Hi all. I’ve noticed the same problem yesterday, sometimes. The
settings
app is not readable by NVDA. However, you can restart this app 2 or
more
times to make it readable. I don’t know, whether this is the problem
with the last security updates of win10. or something is wrong with
some
addons, I doesn’t tri with addons disable

Hi,

Using Windows 10 V1803, I notice that when you tab round in settings
now, none of the lists or tabs are voiced by NVDA at all. I do have
App
Essentials installed.

Any thoughts? They are still voiced by JAWS.

Thanks.

Hi all,

A Microsoft staff was able to reproduce this on Redstone 5, although this isn’t consistent, according to this person. I’ll post an update once we know more.

HiDavid,

I don’t want to reset or roll back or anything like that, because it is working with JAWS so I can live with it.

It does illustrate however, that weird things seem to be happening on some machines with UIA.

Offline due to computer failure

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

I do not know if its the hot weather here, or what but my main pc has
stopped booting, so depending on what a sighted person can deduce, I might
be out of circulation for a short or longer time. Obviously, since it has
an ssd and if that has gone, although I have backups, the configuration of
lots of software is a major task to undertake.
If in the end it is decided to reformat I cannot use the backups either so
that is going to take even longer to rebuild the files.

Basically, this morning I was told an update to an add on was available and I allowed it to proceed, but when the nvda rebooted the computer totally locked up.
On starting with the button, it continuously prompts for boot media, but does not provide a way to enter it. On chatting to the firm that built it they suggest the bios might be corrupt and I should keep hitting delete and then set the proper option. which really is not an option without sighted help.
If this is what it is, it could be the battery, I suppose or it might be corrupt windows, I have a rescue disc and backups from Sunday last, but if its a total mess than I have a major job of rebuilding a very complex lot of software. I'll see you all in the spring!
