One thing that has reached my ears from several people using, particularly laptops using relate sound hardware is that the hardware goes to sleep after a few seconds of no sound, probably due to some driver feature, and these means it seems there is a latency when new audio or speech is played even after a few seconds. Obviously not being a 10 user I cannot tell.

One luminary, who lives in New Zealand has called the current state of Windows 10 audio 'a dogs dinner' compared to windows 7. I will say no more! Maybe Microsoft need to check drivers more thoroughly before approving them. The person concerned returned a Surface series laptop due to this issue, but more recently others have mentioned it. I using 7, am feeling just a little smug, or I was till it did its woopsie on the a couple of days ago of course. Brian bglists@blueyonder.co.uk Sent via blueyonder. Re: Add-on Updater: patch release candidate for update checking and key error problem
Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
Hi Joseph, it seems that the computer issue that
made my machine unbootable was nvda trying to do an update while it was trying
to tell me about an add on update. Can add on updates be made
manual?
Quite what actually happened is hard to say, but
nvda did a restart and when it tried to it locked up the keyboard.
So the only recourse was to use the button
but this time instead of waiting a few seconds and booting into either
safe mode or the normal boot it got stuck before this and somebody had to go
into the bios and tell it to reboot manually.
We have since proved this to be the issue twice, so
on my installed copy, which is now reinstalled Add on updater has been removed
and also I had to manually remove it from the folder in app data/nvda as well as
we kept on getting an error as it said it had a pending update but of
course it had not add on updater so it got into a bit of a spin and completely
scrambled nvdas keyboard input for no good reason I can deduce. Using the mouse
my friend got my portable copy running instead then I went in and
manually deleted the pending add on updater update and so far, fingers crossed
no crashes of nvda with dead keyboard.
Whether this is a specific windows 7
issue or a mismatch with another add on is not really clear, but I'll keep the
add on updater in my portable copy and see if that fixes the issue. I
suspect 9 times out of ten, a button shutdown of windows will in fact work but
now and again, not. somebody needs to invent a talking bios!

Hi Joseph
I also grabbed the latest add on for screen curtain i could not find out where the toogle is to turn the curtain on and off and to check for any thing else to do with it.
It looks as though if say you know your add ons have been updated then a little after say go to check again it keeps on telling you to wait like it is going in a loop. If there are add ons there they come down pretty quick. Since there is no cancel button i had to restart nvda this was after say 10 minutes or so of it looking for updates. I am sure i have read if there is no updates it tells you but may be wrong.

Hi! I have just installed Add-On Updater 18.08.4, after downloading its installer using the link in the email below, but, strangely, “check for add-on updates” no longer appears in the NVDA Tools menu. I have also had no notification of any updates to add-ons today, including Add-On Updater: it’s thanks to reading emails from this NVDA list that I knew about the updates to this add-on. While using a previous version of Add-On Updater, I chose to have it notify me of add-on updates, so would that make the “check for add-on updates” option disappear from the Tools menu? Hi all,
First, I’d like to thank folks who have reported a bug where NVDA kept playing progress beep when trying to check for add-on updates. The root cause has been identified and a fix is now available in 18.08.4. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the problem, this one must be applied manually: https://addons.nvda-project.org/files/get.php?file=nvda3208

Regarding Skype message problem: if you are using the universal app version of Skype (version 12) and find that braille isn't in sync when it comes to making messages shorter, do let me know so I can "fix" this for you ("fix" as in modifying Skype app module that ships with Windows 10 App Essentials, because I can tell that you are using that add-on due to shortened message example). Hi Joseph
This one is to do with the screen curtain.
I have noticed when nvda boots up the screen curtain is on. I have been told by my sighted partner. this is when you turn on the computer for the first time and not stand by.
so to make her happy i went to tools then screen curtain and pressed the enter key on it so it would turn it off.
I then saved the configuration so it would not come up.
Computer gets turned off have a cup of coffee then boot back up the computer from off.
When it boots back up the screen curtain goes back on so then if the wife wants to use it i will turn it off. She says she can not see the screen to do it lol rof. I use it all the time that way i tell her.
I think may be the default should be off until you turn it on.
I am guessing if the sighted partner wanted to use the pc and did not know they would be stumped. On my computer when ever one of my computers boots up nvda comes on and so would the screen curtain until things are ironed out.
Will a short cut be created so it can be turned on and off quickly with out going through the menus?
By the way where i hear the beeps could down the track maybe have it say screen curtain on or off? I do not know what others think but but would be easier than the beep. I think it is high beep for on and low for off?
fI am going to get her to see when i go into other screens etc if it stays on permanently until it is turned off I am guessing it will.
