Re: NVDA beta cycle

Hi Don,

We've actually only just changed to this way of doing things ourselves since NVDA 2018.2.  Previously we used "Next" and "Master" builds, and there have been a few more changes behind the scenes than simply renaming to "Alpha" and "Beta", so we're taking it a bit slowly to ensure the process works smoothly.

Regards

Quentin.

Re: Force Focus Mode?

NVDA+shift+space temporarily disables NVDA's single letter (browse mode) navigation keys.  You can also force NVDA to switch between browse and focus mode by pressing NVDA+space, but again that is temporary, and also that one is a toggle (so it swaps between browse and focus mode and back if you press it again).

Quentin.

It would be most valuable to have an add-on to force focus mode if NVDA really can’t currently do it.

What are the possibilities?

As Simone said, there isn't currently a way to do this.  Perhaps a good question to follow up with is, why do you want to?  Either there might be another way to accomplish what you need, or, of course if there is a good reason to do this, it could be something to consider adding.

Kind regards

Checked is not the same as exhaustively tested each and every time.  If it were, software updates could never happen, as you cannot and do not regression test every last line of code in a hugely complex system.

Add-on Updater: 18.08.5 as last stable version for now, few important announcements

Hi all,

First, thank you all for your valuable feedback regarding Add-on Updater. At the moment I’m making changes to the corresponding pull request (NVDA issue 3208) based on your feedback and the add-on code.

Also, version 18.08.5 will hit the air in about half an hour from now. This one fixes a bug where Add-on Updater settings panel didn’t show up properly if there are add-ons with badly formatted manifest data. I also took this time to exclude Nuance Vocalizer family of add-ons from participating in add-on update checks.

Few more important announcements:

  • Removing “stable” tag: I’m removing stable tag from this add-on once 18.08.5 is released. This is to follow precedence set by Screen Curtain where proof of concept/prototype add-ons will remain under development.
  • Compatibility with really old add-ons: prior to widespread use of Add-on Template, add-on authors would package add-ons by hand. This means add-on manifest data would be formatted in such a way that caused Python to treat them as things other than text. Although Add-on Updater will notice these and take appropriate action, compatibility with these old add-ons is not guaranteed. The solution is for add-on authors to put quotes around manifest data, specifically for summary and description fields. I’ll edit relevant sections in NVDA’s developer guide to reflect this discovery.
  • Feedback channel: in addition to emails and social media replies (Twitter and what not), the best place to send feedback regarding add-on update feature is GitHub via https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/3208.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

Definitely a bit of a tectonic shift in the NVDA settings between 2018.1.1 and 2018.2.1

I somehow hadn't updated, but when I did I realized that a revisitation of the settings structure needs to be on my to-do list.

I open the NVDA UI go to preferences, settings then speech.  It shows

how do you expand the list of available syns to make a selection?
Without using the NVDA UI you can use the key combination NVDA key

Another thoughyt on the behavior.  did you use enter or the space bar on the button?  I am not familiar with the new interface but using enter may activate a different button, depending on how the interface is designed, even if you are on the change button.

This has to do with the concept of the default button, something which would require too much explanation to be praqctical to go into here.  If you pressed enter, try pressing the space bar and see what happens.

I'm not assuming what you know or do.  I am saying that, in general, people aren't taught the concept of the default button and that causes unnecessary problems and makes use less efficient at times.

Because it does the same thing as an ok button.  If there are no changes, what does an ok button do?  It closes the dialog and, it uses and saves changes you have made, or it may use and not save them if the program is designed to require you to permanently save the settings separately.  In this case, since you have made no changes, it changes nothing.  Ok means things are ok either as they are or as you have changed them.

Re: Add-on Updater 18.08.4 patch to correct a regression from18.08.3

Clare Page <clare.page@...>

Hi!

I think I know what might have gone wrong when I installed NVDA Add-On Updater 18.08.4 and there was no sign of that add-on in the NVDA Tools menu: I know now that I forgot two important things.

First of all, Add-On Updater 18.08.4 was a patch to correct a problem in 18.08.3, and I never had the latter version, possibly because my computer might not have been running when the 18.08.3 update came through.

Secondly, I forgot that add-ons can be updated without removing the previous version, so it’s possible 18.08.4 might not have worked on its own.

As I write this, I have removed Add-On Updater from my copy of NVDA until a version comes out which is not referred to as a patch for a previous one.

I look forward to using that add-on again in the future, though, it’s a very useful one.

Bye for now!

Hi!

I have just installed Add-On Updater 18.08.4, after downloading its installer using the link in the email below, but, strangely, “check for add-on updates” no longer appears in the NVDA Tools menu. I have also had no notification of any updates to add-ons today, including Add-On Updater: it’s thanks to reading emails from this NVDA list that I knew about the updates to this add-on.

While using a previous version of Add-On Updater, I chose to have it notify me of add-on updates, so would that make the “check for add-on updates” option disappear from the Tools menu?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

First, I’d like to thank folks who have reported a bug where NVDA kept playing progress beep when trying to check for add-on updates. The root cause has been identified and a fix is now available in 18.08.4. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the problem, this one must be applied manually:

Off the top of my head I'd imagine a portable version could be used for this as well as both identities should be able to see it if its on a stick or a common area of windows folders.

Alternatively if its going to be always the same, then I seem to recall that there is an option to allow all users to access the same folders with restrictions. It worked on Windows 7, but not sure about 10.
