No they have moved on. I think they have also deliberately brought out an end of life patch that actually tells you its at the end of its life. They want it consigned to the bin of time. Having said that, and that its slow and not much runs on it. I was glad i kept a machine around running it when my fancy machine developed a fault. Email works fine and so i could still keep up on here.

I'm very surprised no third party has not hacked xp by now and made it have some get arounds to allow later software to run. It is of course illegal but that never stopped folk before. Note dear reader this is tongue in cheek.

Dear friends, in replying a message, I gave you some sort of small info

Earlier this summer, Microsoft announced that they would be ending support
for version 7.0 of classic Skype in September. If that news didn’t sit well

support Skype 7 and will extend the deadline. The company did not provide a

new timeline for the end of life of the product but did say that they will

The team says that this change is based on customer feedback but is

Hi can I install this version of Thunderbird over the version 54 that I currently have?

Or is it better to uninstall the version that I am currently using and then install the newer version of Thunderbird?

Screen Curtain August 7th build: to go live in half an hour, website entry will return at the same time

Hi all,

Screen Curtain August 7th build will hit the air in about half an hour from now. This build includes following changes as a result of basic add-on review:

  • Settings: now configurable. You can now ask NVDA to not enable screen curtain when it starts (default behavior from now on). Also, the add-on is ready for configuration profile switches – that is, you can enable or disable screen curtain while in certain situations (using an app, for example).
  • Documentation: greatly improved. It now mentions new settings, toggle state, and a link to the actual NVDA issue is provided.
  • Toggle messages: instead of playing a tone whenever screen curtain is toggled, a message will be spoken and brailled. The tone will be heard if screen curtain is enabled when NVDA starts.

Also, this add-on will once again show up on add-ons website under development section as it has gone through basic review process.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

You can't update it directly with the update feature of Thunderbird, but if you use the installer it updates your version without trouble.

There is no way Microsoft is going to release a new version of any current
application to run under Windows XP.

Support for XP ended in April 2014, and anyone who continues using it simply
has to accept that more and more applications will get stuck at old versions
which cannot be upgraded.

It's your choice to carry on using Windows XP - fine - but please don't then
complain when you find things you want to run on it and they won't.

In there select a release, thats 60, just 60.0 no beta, etc.

Select your language, en-us is what I use but en-gb is the global english or any other language.

then win32 is the standard thunderbird, or win 64 or win x64 is the 64 bit directory.

Download that file they are all called the same.

uninstall from add remove programs your old version of thunderbird and then install the new one.

Hi.

Well I must say after updating I chose to use the 64 bit addition of thunderbird from mozilla ftp as I thought why not.

What I found out is that while most to the dialogs are accessible parts of the addon search dialog and install dialogs are not, thats fine because I have no intention of installing addons.

The cpu usage is a bit up, also it will not honor your intergration settings, it kept asking me and I had to tell it to not ask me again.

Otherwise, generally things are accessible, and descriptions have improved.

I am only talking general setup of things.

I do wander though if there is a way to install addons to thunderbird without the installer web interface, as its the brouser in the addons site which has access issues, the site itself is fine in a brouser so if I download an addon say google search I want a way to load it.

Bar that most of it seems fine though its only for email that I have set up, no news, no rss nothing like that.

I havn't bothered with chatting either.

But at least thunderbird quantom is not the same as firefox quantom.

It does seem though that I can drop back to the older esr and it will be fine enough.

How to configure Switch Synth?

Diana Kwok

Hi,

I am new to NVDA. It looks like a great tool for my mum who is in her 70s and losing her sight. She is bilingual (English-Mandarin) and I have installed Switch Synth 1.02 (https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/switchSynth.en.html) together with NVDA on her pc.

Can anyone help with configuration instructions?

Thank you.

I installed Add-On Updater 18.08.5 yesterday, and it shows up as enabled in my add-ons list, but I still have the strange problem I described before, where there is no sign of the add-on updater in either tools or preferences.

As I wr’ite this, I haven’t been warned of any add-on updates either, but that might be simply because none of mine are being updated at this moment. Some of my add-ons are old and have never been updated since I got them as far as I know, which might make a difference.

I probably shouldn’t worry if nothing happens, I just hope to see proof one day that the add-on updater is working, not just that it’s enabled in the Manage Add-ons dialogue.

Bye for now!

Subject: [nvda] Add-on Updater: 18.08.5 as last stable version for now, few important announcements

Hi all,

First, thank you all for your valuable feedback regarding Add-on Updater. At the moment I’m making changes to the corresponding pull request (NVDA issue 3208) based on your feedback and the add-on code.

Also, version 18.08.5 will hit the air in about half an hour from now. This one fixes a bug where Add-on Updater settings panel didn’t show up properly if there are add-ons with badly formatted manifest data. I also took this time to exclude Nuance Vocalizer family of add-ons from participating in add-on update checks.

Few more important announcements:

  • Removing “stable” tag: I’m removing stable tag from this add-on once 18.08.5 is released. This is to follow precedence set by Screen Curtain where proof of concept/prototype add-ons will remain under development.
  • Compatibility with really old add-ons: prior to widespread use of Add-on Template, add-on authors would package add-ons by hand. This means add-on manifest data would be formatted in such a way that caused Python to treat them as things other than text. Although Add-on Updater will notice these and take appropriate action, compatibility with these old add-ons is not guaranteed. The solution is for add-on authors to put quotes around manifest data, specifically for summary and description fields. I’ll edit relevant sections in NVDA’s developer guide to reflect this discovery.
  • Feedback channel: in addition to emails and social media replies (Twitter and what not), the best place to send feedback regarding add-on update feature is GitHub via https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/3208.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

I have had that issue occasionally as well. Usually it takes an NVDA restart, but sometimes Word itself needs to be restarted.

If your machine has low amounts of memory, this could be what's happening in this case. It's possible word is crashing, and NVDA is unable to read the screen. If it's a remote connection, (as you seem to indicate), of course, there could be other factors in play as well, so there's no way to know for sure it's word causing the problem, but using other programs besides word for the same amount of time it takes NVDA to break when using word would answer the question for you.

I installed it yesterday. Personally, in my big gmail account with some folders with more than 7000 messages, it seems to be working faster than the old version, so I think i'll keep it for now. Obviously, some things are working as usual slow, for example delete messages (teoretically I can solve it changing Thunderbird to mark messages as deleted only and not move to the trash forlder, but with this setting the folder need to be manually updated with f5, and it is too distrating for me).
Good version.

A note to those on 52.9.1

thunderbird 60.0 is tunderbird for quantom, its a new upgrade but you
have to get it, if you have 52.91 and are happy with it, ie don't have
any issues, use the link I sent to go to it in releases and get that.

However, please note that your not likely to get any more updates for it.

Its also worth mentioning that the 52x version is the last mozilla
developed version it looks like while mozilla hosts it its a redone
engine using the new quantom engine.

Unlike firefox bar the addons dialog, its actually quite accessible and
is probably what I will use going forward.

However its worth noting that if you really don't like it you can go to
52.91 and stay there for ever more, just know there is no security for
you, on the other end, your addon or addons may or may not work in the
latest version.

The only thing I changed was messages to open in the same window else it
remembered my settings

It also appears that it keeps the same interface themes.

I have not as yet noticed any slowdowns though.

Hi Adriani

I have just added a link to the google translate page for other languages on
the main web page.
You can jump down by letter H to its heading then go down to the link then
press the enter key where it will take you to another page.

For some reason i could not put in a plug in to do it and it wanted it on
every page so have gone down this other route. There is a heading that says
some thing like translate this website to another language and a link to the
translate page. The default language is english and the website main page is
already in the edit section to translate. it is then a matter of changing it
to another language then having it translate to it. Just after the language
combo box you want it to go to is where you can read it in another language.
it also seems if you click on one of the links the next page is also
translated but only on that page i have it pointing to off my website.
You will see what i mean when it is translated.

it may help? for people where english is not there first language like
mine.

Not sure if the steps on what to do is enough or should i add a little more
or hopefully it is clear enough on what to do.

Dear Gene,

thank you for your great job. This is very important for the whole
community. I have forwarded your links to the german community and in the
translations group.

I hope I will find some time during next week to provide you some
suggestions.

I propose to split the related sources in “development sources” and “user
specific sources”. In this way we could add links to github and bitbucket as
well.

Hi Adriani

There is a under construction page that went up tonight for nvda screen
reader related resources off the main website at
http://www.accessibilitycentral.net
When more resources get added there may be links off the nvda related web
pages on my website that point to that page.

I have a rough idea of categories for the resources.
These can be changed  or added to.

Hi Adriani

Yep I am looking at doing a page for nvda screen reader related resources
which i will add it into which will be a separate web page. In that page I
will break it down into say audio resources, video resources maybe nvda
blogs? about using nvda? Not quite sure of other sections if i do and would
be more a point to page but not jeffs one.
Even though he had a good site.

I am guessing we do  have links to other nvda resources like on you tube etc
but not in the one place.

Hi Adriani

I was not sure if it worked on XP as when the directions went up i think at
that time it had been tested on 7,8 and 10.

Would the directions from 10 also work on XP? to get into it as i used to do
it the other way that was posted.

I have not any XP machines here now to test with.

The directions you gave are on the nvda audio tutorials page under trouble
shooting.

Hello,

we had this conversation some months ago, here is a gegistry file which
activates your sound driver in safe mode. It has been tested with XP as well
and it works perfectly. NVDA can be used in safe mode after activating this

Hi

the old way to get into safe mode in windows 10 can be found here at
https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-boot-to-safe-mode-with-command-prompt-2624541

You will need a pair of eyes to do this plus you might not even have sound.

So am guessing you will need to burrow some eyes and give them directions to
fix the problem.
