Reaper might be the best digital audio work station for use with NVDA.
There are a few auto tune effects and tools that are accessible with
Reaper including one which is built right in to Reaper.

Here's a link to get Reaper.

Re: How to configure Switch Synth?

Diana Kwok

Hi Larry & Jacob,

Thanks for your instructions and patience.

Still no luck unfortunately. I do have Automatic-language-switching turned on. I tried to set-up 3 voices for 3 different slots. This works fine each time. However, after each voice set-up, everything is read out in that new voice and in English (including the desktop). Webpages in English are read by the new voice but no Chinese text on webpages in Chinese are read. It seems that only 1 voice is ‘active’ each time.

My Mum may have to do with NVDA reading in English only. Plus I live a long way away and have less than 48 hours left here…

Best wishes,

Diana.

Subject: Re: [nvda] How to configure Switch Synth?

Bear in mind that you will want to do something like activate a speech slot, then make changes to voice output settings, before then saving those settings for later use.

For example, I would press NVDA + ctrl + shift + 1, then use nvda + ctrl + s to bring up synthesizer dialogue, make a choice, and then use nvda + ctrl + v to bring up the voice settings, make a choice, and voice setting changes, and then hit nvda + ctrl + shift + v to save the current settings to the previously selected slot.

You would then repeat these steps, choosing a different slot each time, to have multiple switch synth combinations available/configured.

And, while it may suit some people, I will mention that one of the reasons I leave any form of automatic language switching turned off is since web developers don't always pay attention to what they should have set a web-page's underlying language to, and, that's one of the triggers that something like that would react to...<smile>

Stay well

Preferred settings means the synth settings you need to switch between. To configure speech settings, open NVDA menu and go to Preferences -> Settings... -> Speech. If your mum needs automatic switching between English and Mandarin ,try vocalizer expressive on https://vocalizer-nvda.com/

As for OCR ,add a Chinese keyboard layout in Windows language settings and Windows will download data for Chinese OCR and install it. It may take a few minutes.

Hi Diana,

Is this addon enabled and loaded successfully? If so.

After pressing NVDA+Ctrl+Shift+3  if the slot is empty ,you will hear three. Then you can config a preferd setting.Press NVDA+Ctrl+Shift+V ,you will hear "Saved".Repeat this procedure on other slots  then  synth setting will be switched to corresponding slot after press certain hotkey.

I don't have a suggestion about how to eliminate the behavior but I suspect you are asking because you reboot regularly, perhaps once a day. This is unnecessary. You should reboot from time to time, but you may not have to do so for many days or perhaps a seven day week or more. You can experiment and see at what point the system develops instability or odd problems start to occur. You can use hibernate and eliminate the problem except when you do a full reboot.

Hi,
First, as the author of this add-on, I'd like to apologize for issues caused by installation problems from this add-on.
To others: yes, the one the original poster is referring to is indeed Windows 10 App Essentials.
As for the nature of the problem: I'm thinking somehow the installation steps weren't completed. To find out, go to NVDA menu/Tools/Manage Add-ons. If Windows 10 App Essentials is listed as "install" rather than "enable", chances are that an incomplete installation took place.
To remedy this:
1. Restart your computer.
2. Download and install Windows 10 App Essentials stable version from https://addons.nvda-project.org/files/get.php?file=w10.
3. Once installation completes (let it run until you are asked to restart NVDA), restart NVDA.
4. Go to Add-ons Manager and see if Windows 10 App Essentials shows up as "enabled".

Cheers,
Joseph

So do I have to do that update manually now? and if I have to do that from where I should do it?

Thanks in advance

Anthony

I don't have a suggestion about how to eliminate the behavior but I suspect you are asking because you reboot regularly, perhaps once a day. This is unnecessary. You should reboot from time to time, but you may not have to do so for many days or perhaps a seven day week or more. You can experiment and see at what point the system develops instability or odd problems start to occur. You can use hibernate and eliminate the problem except when you do a full reboot.

Hi All,

Does anyone experience this:

After I turn on my laptop, enter my password, it goes to the desktop
and NVDA voice comes up;

Then a long silence during which no key works;

then a message announcing the size of the window;

then long silence; and finally the desktop is working.

Is there anyone to disable the announcing of the window size? Any
other suggestion?

Many thanks

Gene, what happens when you activate that link? When I
activate it, whether by regular mouse click or in a screen reader,
the end result is dead silence and, in the case of a screen reader,
with no object having focus anywhere in the visible area where the
link activation makes the page scroll to.

If I were not able to see exactly what's happening,
and what NVDA "sees" as happening via the Focus Highlight add-on, I'd
definitely think that activating that link "did nothing" and repeated
space bar presses or hits of enter after activating it initially do
nothing more since nothing's got focus where they clearly intend for
the user to begin picking from two dropdown lists.

It's just plain weird, weird, weird.

Hi,
Note that this is a proof of concept work, and yes, someone is thinking about working on it for Core.
Regarding speech versus beep at startup: the issue with speech is that, ideally, Screen Curtain message should be spoken last, but given all sorts of things that can happen - focus changes, add-on update notifications, toasts and what not, it is a bit risky to use this method for startup notification for now.

Joseph

Hi Joseph,

Excellent work. I have tested this functionality by trying this add-on with NVDA 2018.3 Beta 2 on my Windows 8.1 system, and am happy to confirm that it works as advertised. Having said that, I do have a few
comments:
• Having read the add-on documentation, it is still somewhat unclear
to me why there is a toggle option in the Tools submenu as well as a check box in a separate category in the Settings dialog to enable or disable the screen curtain. A clarification on the need for two instances of these seemingly similar controls would be greatly appreciated.
• It seems rather unintuitive and inconsistent to indicate the
presence of a screen curtain via a beep when NVDA starts but with speech feedback when enabled during an NVDA session. For sake of standardization at least, I propose (1) opting for only one of these two indicators (preferably speech feedback) or (2) allowing a user to choose either speech or the beep for both instances (feels like an overkill).
• We may want to consider naming this feature differently since the
equivalent for Voiceover is also called screen curtain has been in existence for a long time.

I appreciate the efforts involved in actualizing this long-standing feature request, and hope that my above remarks will be discussed and this add-on’s capabilities will be incorporated into NVDA core in the near future.

Thanks.

Just downloaded the screen curtain add on hearing screen
curtain on

I also checked out the documentation as well and had a quick read.

I think maybe some people may know or some will not that you
can
asign a short cut key to turn it on and off. There was no
mention in
the help section or where to go if you are a new user of the
add on.

I Until i looked under the gestures section then tools then
screen
curtain i did not know where this could be done.

Some people may not be aware you can asign a gesture to some of
the
add ons.

Do you reckon it needs to be mentioned or not just looking at
it
from a new user.

a bit of a problem with the Code Factory Vocalizer Voices demo

Larry Higgins

Hopefully someone can tell me just what I might have done wrong.

I just installed the Vocalizer voices addon demo, and can't get them to run at all.

I fear that  one of the following move might have been in error on my part.

On the Thursday before last, I installed Code Factory Eloquence for Windows, and of course since then, the demo  has timed out. So I tried installing the Addon for NVDA, and can get nowhere in getting the voices to run.

The second possible  error that I might  have made was not installing  from the addon menu, but from the download  folder. However, there  was no indication of an error when doing so.

Guess  I am just wondering if there  is any chance that I will ever get these things running, or should I just give up?

I don't think I  will be registering the Vocalizer voices, but gladly settling  for Eloquence, but I thought I would at least like to sample the voices anyway.

By all  indications, I seem to have done everything necessary, so again, what gives?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Larry

Hi,

Which NVDA version do you have? If it is 2018.2, chances are that it might be something going wrong when the add-on starts, or somehow the installation has become corrupt.

Re: windows essential update

Hi,
First, as the author of this add-on, I'd like to apologize for issues caused by installation problems from this add-on.

Cheers,
Joseph

Chris,

Guess I need a bit of help myself.

When I go to the NVDA menu, and locate preferences, I have eleven options, none of them are anything like "Windows 10 App Essentials."

I don't know if I need this update or not, but not being able to locate this menu option is a bit disconcerting.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Larry

I don't have a suggestion about how to eliminate the behavior but I suspect you are asking because you reboot regularly, perhaps once a day. This is unnecessary. You should reboot from time to time, but you may not have to do so for many days or perhaps a seven day week or more. You can experiment and see at what point the system develops instability or odd problems start to occur. You can use hibernate and eliminate the problem except when you do a full reboot.

Well I have the same issues on my systems one of which doesn't have

things start, sometimes nvda starts just to early for the desktop,
sometimes well it doesn't start but then it will if I wait.

Hi All,

Does anyone experience this:

After I turn on my laptop, enter my password, it goes to the desktop
and NVDA voice comes up;

Then a long silence during which no key works;

then a message announcing the size of the window;

then long silence; and finally the desktop is working.

Is there anyone to disable the announcing of the window size? Any
other suggestion?

Many thanks

Blessings

Now a while ago it was suggested that I try the accessible podcast suite from webbie. Well I have just about given up.
For a start, it has to be made to download the podcasts. I have 14 in my list and most of them it scrambled.
My needs may be a little peculiar, having been used to Juice, which auto downloads all the podcasts in the links on a timed rota and indeed on turn on if you like. it has all the files stored in mp3 format and they can easily be copied out and twiddled with so I can put them on our local talking newspaper.
Accessible seems to play them from the web link, and only when you ask it to does it go and download. it seems to be all or nothing in all feeds and some blatantly do not work. IE the nature magazine podcast ends up in a temp folder of IE for some reason, not in the folder created for it in the documents area of windows.
Audioboom used by the RNIB are downloaded to the right place but the file names get scrambled with the .mp3 in the middle of the file name which although they play in the podcast player they need to be renamed to play anywhere else.
Only the BBC podcasts seem to work. The ones we do using feedburner often get truncated at the start for no good reason, as if part of the download was skipped.
So, I think its bin time for accessible podcast.
Given my requirements of clean good auto downloads in files one can play outside of the podcast downloader and that it has to work with nvda. would anyone care to suggest something paid for or free for windows that actually ruddy well works for everything?
I'm losing my hair!
