how to start a connectgion with remote Addon?

Jaffar Sidek <jaffar.sidek10@...>

Hi all.  I need to be connecting to a client's desktop with NVDA soon.  How can I establish the address of the client's computer for me to connect to?  Should I ask him to ping his IP address and use that as the cooection or is there another way?  Cheers!

Re: Keyboard With Extra Feature Keys

Quentin Christensen

Most keyboards with extra keys I've used tend to just work out of the box, particularly on Windows 10.  I must admit, I've never used the extra keys on my cheap logitech here, so I just tried and I can press the browser button to open my default browser, and email button to open email etc.

So those functions themselves work with or without NVDA or any other AT running.

NVDA has an "Input Gestures" feature on the Preferences menu, which can be used to configure keystrokes for NVDA functions.  I just tested and confirmed that yes, those keys can be reassigned with NVDA if needed (just like keys on a Braille display etc).

Quentin.

Re: bug or not?

Quentin Christensen

The error seems to be occurring in the Advanced Touch Gestures add-on.  As Brian suggests, one of the first things to try is disabling either that addon or restart NVDA and disable all addons.  The other thing to try, is to see if there is a new version of the add-on.

To disable the addon only:
1. Press NVDA+n for the menu,
2. Press T for tools,
3. Press A for add-ons.
4. From the add-on manager, select the addon with the arrows,
5. then alt+d to disable
6. Press alt+c to close the dialog and restart NVDA.

To restart NVDA with ALL add-ons disabled, press NVDA+q, then down arrow to "Restart with Add-ons disabled" and press ENTER.  Once finished, restart NVDA again to restore the add-ons.

Regards

Quentin.

I'm in the same position with it on the beta 2 version installed, yet alpha
snaps are working as portable and the add on is OK there. Look at the errors
I posted on the add ons list. It seems to be the eof error that is doing it.
I cannot see any difference between the add ons on both systems, so unless
the beta of nvda latest version is somehow different. I have had to turn it
off as all I get otherwise is an error on nvda start up and no menu option.
Could there be some remnant of something left that its seeing as a file it

Which NVDA version do you have? If it is 2018.2, chances are that it might
be something going wrong when the add-on starts, or somehow the
installation
has become corrupt.

Re: How to configure Switch Synth?

Diana Kwok <dkwok2017@...>

Hi Larry & Jacob,

Thanks for your instructions and patience.

Still no luck unfortunately. I do have Automatic-language-switching turned on. I tried to set-up 3 voices for 3 different slots. This works fine each time. However, after each voice set-up, everything is read out in that new voice and in English (including the desktop). Webpages in English are read by the new voice but no Chinese text on webpages in Chinese are read. It seems that only 1 voice is ‘active’ each time.

My Mum may have to do with NVDA reading in English only. Plus I live a long way away and have less than 48 hours left here…

Best wishes,

Diana.

Subject: Re: [nvda] How to configure Switch Synth?

Bear in mind that you will want to do something like activate a speech slot, then make changes to voice output settings, before then saving those settings for later use.

For example, I would press NVDA + ctrl + shift + 1, then use nvda + ctrl + s to bring up synthesizer dialogue, make a choice, and then use nvda + ctrl + v to bring up the voice settings, make a choice, and voice setting changes, and then hit nvda + ctrl + shift + v to save the current settings to the previously selected slot.

You would then repeat these steps, choosing a different slot each time, to have multiple switch synth combinations available/configured.

And, while it may suit some people, I will mention that one of the reasons I leave any form of automatic language switching turned off is since web developers don't always pay attention to what they should have set a web-page's underlying language to, and, that's one of the triggers that something like that would react to...<smile>

Stay well

As for OCR ,add a Chinese keyboard layout in Windows language settings and Windows will download data for Chinese OCR and install it. It may take a few minutes.

Hi Diana,

Is this addon enabled and loaded successfully? If so.

After pressing NVDA+Ctrl+Shift+3  if the slot is empty ,you will hear three. Then you can config a preferd setting.Press NVDA+Ctrl+Shift+V ,you will hear "Saved".Repeat this procedure on other slots  then  synth setting will be switched to corresponding slot after press certain hotkey.

Hi,

I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling addon updater. I can’t get the check for updates option to show up at all.

Yes, I am getting the same results!

Updater works great with alpha snapshots, but not with beta!

Could there be some remnant of something left that its seeing as a file it

needs to scan?

Hi Anthony
I assume you are referring to Windows 10 App Essentials. You can force an update by going to the NVDA menu using NVDA+n, then activate preferences. In the Preferences menu you will find an entry for Windows 10 App Essentials. Activate this, tab to Check for updates and press enter.

I don't have a suggestion about how to eliminate the behavior but I suspect you are asking because you reboot regularly, perhaps once a day. This is unnecessary. You should reboot from time to time, but you may not have to do so for many days or perhaps a seven day week or more. You can experiment and see at what point the system develops instability or odd problems start to occur. You can use hibernate and eliminate the problem except when you do a full reboot.

Gene, what happens when you activate that link? When I
activate it, whether by regular mouse click or in a screen reader,
the end result is dead silence and, in the case of a screen reader,
with no object having focus anywhere in the visible area where the
link activation makes the page scroll to.

If I were not able to see exactly what's happening,
and what NVDA "sees" as happening via the Focus Highlight add-on, I'd
definitely think that activating that link "did nothing" and repeated
space bar presses or hits of enter after activating it initially do
nothing more since nothing's got focus where they clearly intend for
the user to begin picking from two dropdown lists.

It's just plain weird, weird, weird.

Hi,
First, as the author of this add-on, I'd like to apologize for issues caused by installation problems from this add-on.
To others: yes, the one the original poster is referring to is indeed Windows 10 App Essentials.
As for the nature of the problem: I'm thinking somehow the installation steps weren't completed. To find out, go to NVDA menu/Tools/Manage Add-ons. If Windows 10 App Essentials is listed as "install" rather than "enable", chances are that an incomplete installation took place.
To remedy this:
1. Restart your computer.
2. Download and install Windows 10 App Essentials stable version from https://addons.nvda-project.org/files/get.php?file=w10.
3. Once installation completes (let it run until you are asked to restart NVDA), restart NVDA.
4. Go to Add-ons Manager and see if Windows 10 App Essentials shows up as "enabled".

Cheers,
Joseph
