I don't think you can do much about idiotic web site design. I think you might be able to in Jaws, though it is often a trial and error thing as unless you have sighted help to identify non marked controls you are stuffed. It might be worth writing to the site admins and pointing out that a little bit ofalt tagging would go a long way. Brian

Hi group, I came across this post about changing the order of mail message columns in Thunderbird.
https://nvda.groups.io/g/nvda/topic/colum_headers_in_thunderbird/3281531?p=, ,,20,0,0,0::recentpostdate%2Fsticky,0,,20,0,780,3281531 Unfortunately I can't find the column headers anywhere on Thunderbird 60.0 using object navigation. I can move around the message list and folder list and I've been able to drag and drop folders around using the same method.
Has anyone had any luck with accessing the message column headers with recent Thunderbird versions please?
Very many thanks, David

So not even the sighted get it? That is odd. Very long ago when the BBC started adding such messages a similar issue occurred on their I player, where you could not play anything until you realised there was an invisible message to be found and all sorts of messing about had to be applied to get it to be seen. I think they have fixed it now, but at the start all sorts of problems occurred. Maybe its the office newbie who was given the job of adding it!

Re: Button no longer works on website after Windows update
Howard, I'm not quite clear regarding what you mean by, "where you are reading." If NVDA has focus on a segment of text, and is reading it, and you stop the reading you should be able to use the NVDA command for Move mouse to current navigator object to accomplish what you say if I'm understanding you correctly. That's NVDA+numpadDivide for desktop keyboard layout and NVDA+shift+m for laptop keyboard layout. Caret browsing is another option that might prove easier. --

I don't particularly care if they use a keyboard
themselves. It would be nice if at least one person reviewed the design
using a keyboard, but not just a keyboard, a screen-reader. You can't
evaluate a site from the keyboard without knowing how to use a
screen-reader. But if they don't want to bother doing that, the site
should be tested by blind people while the site is under development.

Just one more example of what happens when
someone or a corporation, which is bye law a person, so someone, with very
little brain, like Winney the Pu (spelling) still doesn't know after years
of working with advocacy groups to make their site accessible, that you
don't just make changes. You test them with blind users before
implementing them. This is clearly something a sighted person would
see. A screen-reader wouldn't read it automatically. the page
has changed. Perhaps this change could be properly coded using Aria or
JAVA script, I don't have the technical knowledge to know how best to do
it. The person would be placed on the correct control and the text
would be read as well as the control you are on. But no.
Obviously the changes weren't tested, not even with one or two blind
people. Even Winnie The Pu learns faster.

Re: NVDA not reading emoji in emoji panel
Hi Joseph
I cannot get NVDA to read the emoji panel in any application which allows text input. For example, I am writing this in Thunderbird and I cannot select emoji while typing this message. Also in Notepad and other text editors I have tried and also not in the message composition window of Outlook 2013. If I bring up Narrator, I can use it to select emoji from the panel.
It used to work for me in NVDA, but I can't pinpoint at which point it stopped working.
Kind regards
Christo

Hello all
I used to be able to access emoji in the emoji panel you get by pressing Windows key plus period or Windows key plus semicolon, but for some reason NVDA does not read the emoji in that panel or the category names anymore. Narrator reads them perfectly, so I know they are there and I can use Narrator to insert emoji in my text.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing NVDA to just say "blank" when I navigate around the emoji panel? Is there some setting that could be upsetting NVDA?
I am using NVDA version 2018.3 Beta 2 on a 32 bit Windows 10 machine with the latest Windows update. I have the latest version of Windows 10 App Essentials add-on installed and active.
I would appreciate your suggestions.
Kind regards
Christo

Rick's question reminds me of one I've had:
How does one route the mouse pointer to where you are reading?
Thanks.

Subject: [nvda] Button no longer works on
website after Windows update
Hello:
Overnight, my computer was updated with the latest Windows
update for Windows 10 Professional. As a result, some buttons on a certain
website no longer function. They worked yesterday and they do not work today
and the only change I know of to my computer is the Windows update. The url
is:
http://boctoastmasters.com/
I have tried both Internet Explorer 11 and the latest
version of Firefox.
There are 2 buttons on this page that I can no longer
activate, one labeled Member Login and another labeled Login as Site Admin.
They can be quickly navigated to using the B key. However, I cannot seem to
get them to perform their typical action using either the keyboard (I’ve tried
Enter, Space and Shift + Enter) or routing the mouse and pressing the slash
key to simulate a left mouse click.
If the button works, you will be presented with an edit box
where you can begin entering your name. There have been no changes made to the
website. I know this because I am one of its administrators.
I am using the latest released version of NVDA without any
addins.

Re: Button no longer works on website after Windows update
I suspect something tied to the cookie notification myself, as these are, in the grand scheme of things, a relatively recent development. Whether the screen reader is on or off, I am not being presented with this notification when the page initially loads, and that's across machines. --

Re: Change on Amazon makes buying options less, possibly inaccessible with screenreaders while on product page
I don't particularly care if they use a keyboard
themselves. It would be nice if at least one person reviewed the design
using a keyboard, but not just a keyboard, a screen-reader. You can't
evaluate a site from the keyboard without knowing how to use a
screen-reader. But if they don't want to bother doing that, the site
should be tested by blind people while the site is under development.

lol Gene!
keep telling folks that if these designers
would just use these sites with a keyboard they might find out how not user
friendly they are!

Just one more example of what happens when
someone or a corporation, which is bye law a person, so someone, with very
little brain, like Winney the Pu (spelling) still doesn't know after years of
working with advocacy groups to make their site accessible, that you don't
just make changes. You test them with blind users before implementing
them. This is clearly something a sighted person would see. A
screen-reader wouldn't read it automatically. the page has
changed. Perhaps this change could be properly coded using Aria or JAVA
script, I don't have the technical knowledge to know how best to do it.
The person would be placed on the correct control and the text would be read
as well as the control you are on. But no. Obviously the changes
weren't tested, not even with one or two blind people. Even Winnie The
Pu learns faster.

Ok, that works. Thank you. A stupid workaround, but hopefully
amazon will change things back, not holding my breath, or the NVDA
developers will figure out how to work with this kind of
change. Travis ----- Original Message ----- From: "Danni" <luv2ride67@...> To: <nvda@nvda.groups.io> Sent:

Re: Button no longer works on website after Windows update
Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
In waterfox on windows 7, which also did an update today, the button does not show up. However refreshing shows the cookies message the nvda/waterfox did not get the first time and then accept allows the button to be there and interacted with. My feeling on this is that there is a display of the main page, then a display of the cookie message, but the latter is not actually seen by nvda unless you force nvda and waterfox to reload. its a bit like on some sites with google bits when the place they should be is empty, but a refresh gets them back. Sometimes the site realises and says server not available, but in this case it seems nvda or woaterfox is unaware of the overlay completely until you do something to refresh it.
It reminds me of a very very old nvda bug where at start of firefox, the page would not seem to be there unless you open and close a menu or switched away and back or refreshed the page.
