ZoomText problem

Larry Silvermintz <silvermintz@...>

I’ve been using ZoomText for many years.

Because NVDA has an amazingly good Punctuation Symbols Dictionary,  a few weeks ago I started using it as my reader, with ZoomText 9.1 Reader-Magnifier with speech turned-off for doing the magnification.  Symbol pronounciation control is really helpful when reading and writing computer program code.

My Computer:  Win7-64

Problem:

Now after everything is working fine for a few weeks, switching back and forth between NVDA reader and ZoomText reader, I notice that when using ZoomText’s reader the ZoomText say sentence (SentenceNav) commands no longer work, and the say paragraph commands (control-up and control-down) work erratically.  This may not be related to NVDA since the problem is present even when NVDA is either not running or is in sleep mode.  I have tried rebooting the computer multiple times without NVDA activated.  With the help of the ZT tech support rep, we also tried reinstalling ZT and the problem persists.

Please suggest how to get ZT working correctly again, regardless if the problem is related to NVDA.

Thanks --Larry

Hi

I am wondering if it is the following under the documentation formatting menu in NVDA. Look for Line indentation reporting: Off  then turn it to off.

it sounds like it could be set to beeps? there is another option there for speech. Just put them to off it is a combo box.

I do not think it is spelling errors where you get a buzz sound if that was the case under the same section turn off reporting of spelling areas. There was another section which skips my mind at present but am guessing it is the first option given.

Hi

Not all languages have a speech pack.

If you check out my tutorial for installing windows one core voice at http://www.accessibilitycentral.net/nvda%20tutorials%20for%20windows%2010.html

When you are on the page jump down by headins until you get to that section. It is in written format and there is a audio tutorial if i remember right.

I wonder if Outlook Express Classic, I believe it's called has identities.  I believe that's the name of the program that simulates Outlook Express but has accessibility problems, which the developers are, evidently, slowly working on.

I use Microsoft Outlook in a professional setting. I don’t use all of its features, but I do need many of them.

I’m somewhat surprised by how well NVDA works with Microsoft Outlook, since the situations in which it is used extensively haven’t historically been where NVDA’s users are found (e.g., government, education, corporate environments).

All one has to do is think about any of the other Microsoft Office suite programs, other office suites, Thunderbird, most web browsers, and more and how they use them to realize that they "haven't even scratched the surface with all the features."

There are lots of things in the MS Office suite of programs that I've never touched, including some of the programs themselves (e.g., OneNote).

I use Thunderbird. It's very easy to download and install if you get it from www.ninite.com. Some settings need to be tweaked in order for it to work well with a screen reader. I have instructions if anybody needs them. I've noticed lately that it's sluggish on start-up, so you just need to be patient and after a while, it'll work normally. The Windows 10 mail app also works well with NVDA, but set-up only works with Narrator, and it doesn't have all the features that Thunderbird does. I hope this is helpful.

Re: Favourite add-ons

Hi,

I doubt Windows 10 App Essentials will disappear into NVDA Core anytime soon, as things can happen with Windows 10 ecosystem that NV Access didn’t have time to come up with workarounds on time. I can say that some of the biggest features from that add-on are now part of NVDA (as of 2018.3 beta 3), and the release blurb does mention emoji panel, which came straight from my add-on.

As for my favorites list, apart from my own add-ons, I use Remote Support, as there are times I need to assist someone remotely or monitor one or more computers somewhere other than home.

Cheers,

Joseph

The last 2 should someday disappear into the core of NVDA but for now, they are among my favorites.

I can confirm that part of the Place marker add-on does not work in Edge. The command to set a mark, ctrl+Shift+NVDA+k does not work. When reading ePub books I use the add-on's specific find feature to find my place. It is a bit more cumbersome, but it works well. Of course the first prize would be if the app can be made to work in Edge as well as it works elsewhere.

Here you are saying that you need to match something followed by "lv" rather than prefixed with "lv", which is best done with a second regular expression.  Please provide a number of examples, including Chinese characters, of things you'd like to have matched that would be followed by lv.   If there can be intervening whitespace between the prefixing characters and the following "lv" then definitely include examples of such.

The ability to do regular expression matching and substitution is one of NVDA's most powerful features "under the hood," and very few have any idea that it exists or how it's used, so this is a worthwhile discussion to have.  I can't recall one about regular expressions occurring on the group before.

William,

First, try the regular expression for the match:     (lv\s*)([0-9]+)
with the same substitution:  level \2

If that does not work, then please provide at least 5 examples of strings that should be matched, including ones with Chinese characters if those are to be matched, and I'll have to figure out the refinements.

I have noticed with both beta 2 and beta 3 that often when in file
explorer if I use the arrow keys to read the files in a folder that
on what seems to be a random basis when I hit the down arrow NVDA
does not read the next file name.  If I arrow up then arrow down it
usually reads the file name. Continue arrowing down and the same
thing happens.  Once it stops reading the next file name a continue
pressing of the down arrow does not voice anything although my
sighted help says the highlighted file continues to move down the
list of files.
It is so random in nature I can't tell you how to duplicate it.
