Nvda and thunderbird 60

Mr. Wong Chi Wai, William <cwwong.pro@...>

Hi, I am using NVDA latest version and Thunderbird 60.
Now, when I am composing new email and if I have attached files to the email, if I tap after the subject field to read the attachments, NVDA didn't read the file names.
I am not sure if this is a NVDA bug or thunderbird bug.
William

Re: Updated the accessible applications wiki again.

I added the free version to the wiki. I really don't want to promote paid software on the wiki because accessibility could break later. I plan on adding a few more links either Friday or Saturday but for now, the free version of OE Classic has been added to the wiki. 2.9 will be even more accessible, by the way.

Re: Microsoft office 2019accessibility

Quentin Christensen

Hi Robert,

I just replied to someone else with pretty much this, but sometimes things just come through as improved UX rather than accessibility specifically.  Spell check in Word 365 for instance, is vastly better than it used to be - you get the context of an error and the error spelt now, and when moving through alternate spellings, it automatically reads definitions.

Of course, change can also take some getting used to, and comes with the possibility of breaking things (for instance, alt+letter accelerator keys don't work in spell check now, although as long as you aren't on the edit box, you can now press the letter without alt).

The other thing of course, is that I can tell you what Office 365 is like right now, but no guarantee of what it will be like this time next year...

I have Office 365 so will get it, 2019, eventually, because my fans, thank you! By the way, collectively bought me like 5 years of Office 365. Thank you again! By the way. Anyway, to the OP, I've heard nothing about accessibility enhancements for Office at all. I'd keep up with Flying blind, LLC, or blind bargains, for that info, but I am gonna try to do some more digging today.

Re: MS Office

Hi Don,

Microsoft are regularly updating Office 365.  So, while you may be wary of that if you aren't a fan of change, they are improving some things.  For instance, spell check in Word is much better now than it used to be in Word 2013 - you get the context of an error and the error spelt again, when moving through alternate words, it automatically reads the definition etc.

Of course, change introduces the possibility of things breaking as well, but on the whole, I like Office 365, yes.

Regards

Quentin.

Hi Quentin

I went back to beta 2 and beta 1 they still have the same problem. they only also have 56 files in the main directory.. they were downloaded from the nvda developers snap shot page at https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/snapshots/

I beleave the location has not moved?? as that is where i have been downloading them from.

There is no add ons at all in these versions of nvda and i just now went in and disabled all add on etc in fire fox aprt from add blocker as it does not cause problems with alfa or stable.

it still crashes Mozilla fire fox.

I also done it from the 2018.3 beta 3 file over the top still crashes the user guide and mozilla fire fox.

I will be going back to the 2018.2.1 version as it does not do it nor does the alfa.

Hi Quentin

Even with that program turned off when you go to open the browser or even the user manual in nvda it crashes. There even in the portable version should not only be 53 files in the main directory.

It does not crah as mentioned before in the stable version or the alfa. Yet the other browsers work nice with it.

I might go back and try previous versions of the beta. to see if the same problem is there. I just can not remember i know when it was reported first i think it was a 2018.3 beta 3 release.

Gene,

I remember the issue, and I recall having a couple of dialogues with Mick about it, and from memory, I think he had an idea of something to look at, but I can't recall the outcome.  The best suggestion I have off the top of my head, is to try Beta 3 and see if it resolves the issue.

Did the problem with the browseer get sorted out when you either open it or do it through the user manual for mozilla fire fox? apart from maybe installing it over the top of the 2018.2.1 version i have not done to see if the same problem is still there.

I think All Jaws does is to add a key that does the actual presses
internally, which seems to me to be a waste of a keypress as keys unasigned
tend to be getting as rare as hens teeth these days!
There used to be a neat utility that just did macros ie you could define a

series of keypresses for a simple sequence to do for you.

NVDA does have the ability to remap keystrokes for its internal commands
via the "Input Gestures" dialog - press NVDA+n, then p, then select "Input
gestures", search for the command you want, and add a new keystroke (or
remove one).

CONTROL+UP ARROW or CONTROL+DOWN ARROW to move by paragraph in Word, is
actually a Word command rather than an NVDA command however, so you can't
remap that one. It's a common function though and is available in many
programs.

Quentin.

If you follow the link, you can read the information without being a member.  I tried it today.

It is a page asking me to log in. I had horrible trouble getting away from
that site a few years back and getting my stuff removed, so I'm not going to
join it again unless I lie  and call myself Mickey mouse or something but
I'd bet that is against their terms of service now they are, like Github
owned by Microsoft!

Re: Update on Amazon Kindle Site with NVDA

Kwork

The other thing you can do that I've figured out now, is to use object navigation. For instance, on this particular book, do the following:

Go to the first heading. It's called "buying options." There's no level number associated with it, so using the numbers on the keyboard won't work.

NVDA+numpad 2 to move into the dialogue using object navigation.

NVDA+numpad 6 and NVDA+numpad 4 to move forward and back through the dialogue.

NVDA+numpad enter to make your selection.

Since this one is available on Kindle Unlimited, you can either buy the book or read it with KU. Moving forward through the dialogue this way will at least tell you the price, if it's available through KU along with a "read now" button if applicable, and offer you the "buy" button after the other information given.

Another way to get more quickly to the buy button is to go to the buying options heading, press f once to the next form, sometimes a checkbox, sometimes the name of the Kindle device where the book will be sent, then shift tab back to the buy now button, usually two or three choices back.

The problem with this method is that you haven't heard the price yet, or know KU availabilityunless you check down the page first.

Things are still broken with NVDA 2018.3 beta, and so far the developers have been silent.

This is getting confusing now, as I've seen mail saying use the beta, and other mail saying there will be an RC. I would guess its anybody's guess!

Hay I was wondering when nvda 2018.3 RC 1 will be out. I was also wondering if you were still doing RC builds any more with the new changes in nv access? Just let me know.

Re: problem with windows10 OCR

To be honest if you search about you can still find units new ones running win7, any hp unit stating g1 or  g2 probably is still ok.

I can still get some 4, 5 and even 6'th gen units, you may have to buy win7 from ebay or something but you can still use those generations witn 7.

Its what I have been grapling with for a bit myself.

I can and probably will get an amd risen 5 unit or even a 7 unit, but on the other hand, with what I run with no virtual machines, updating from a 3rd gen to a 4th gen will be fine my dad updated to a 4th gen workstation and has been running fine.

I went down to mail, I hit space, nothing happened, route mouse to navigator object folloed by left click, nothing, tried enter, nothing, space, and enter two times, still mail did not activate, NVDA did not click it. So I unloaded NVDA and started the latest jaws2018. Jaws old legacy MSAA drivers are turned off for windows10. So I told jaws to OCR the screen, it did. It turned on the jaws cursor, I moved to windows10 mail, and did a left mouse click twice quickly. And mail activated and loaded up. So what is wrong with NvDA OCR? Why won’t it activate mail while jaws will in fact activate mail? Will I have to use jaws to get at the menus of games such as madden nfl 19 and successfully click the options and then unload jaws to play? Is this a NVDA OCR bug, or is there a more accurate OCR NVDA addon? In any case I am glad I have two screen readers on here, in case one does not work, the other probably will.

I'm pretty certain ocr keypresses in nvda on windows 10 use cloud ocr, but have never had the need to test it on anyones machine.

I think Jaws uses omnipage.

you cannot do my knowledge do this. you would need something like cloud
ocr to do this by the way tha thas not ben updated in a number of years
so good luck using it.

Does not Jaws use its own internal ocr and nvda use the cloud ocr of microsoft?

I'm pretty sure that in the main, no, you can use the beta releases instead. Obviously if some kind of odd problem does show up test builds are being made but you need to be on the github issues list to normally know about them. There was one recently to help speed up firefox rendering but it seems to have created a link repeating bug.
