Thanks much! That worked like a champ! I bookmarked the page so as long as the portable version is always on this page I can get newer versions from now on. If they change the page with each new version, then it won't work but I hope it will.

I don’t belong to either crazy blindness org, but I’m only 1 individual blind dude and it doesn’t hurt to contact these tech giants with our concerns regardless of our disability. We need to work with our current admin in the WH like it or lump it.

For instance, an audio captcha, or asking a question that we can then answer, proving we are human. One more way that I have just contemplated is to use the code generator to provide the answer to the captcha. Have a mode in which it provides these answers if you are blind and/or visually impaired. I'm sure there are other quite inventive ways I haven't yet thought of that could be used as well.


This is all to say that something must be done at your soonest opportunity to do so. I hope that this is not long languishing in a pile that is not urgent or not looked at."

Is this only in Windows 10?  If so, are you using that version?  If the users are having a problem and are using different versions of Windows, do you know what they are?
 
This sounds to me like a Windows 10 problem when used with NVDA.  Perhaps it's the same sort of problem that has been discussed in other contexts when NVDA is used with Windows 10. 
 
As a work around, perhaps opening Winamp manually, then while it is opened, go back to the files list and play the files.  Perhaps if the player is already opened, the problem may be avoided.

For what it is worth, Narrator in Internet Explorer or ChromeVox in
Chrome doesn't read them either when tabbing.
In Narrator, you can do a caps-left arrow to read it, then a caps-right
arrow to move back to the edit field. You can do the same ChromeVox
equivalent command to get the info.

This is under Windows 10 1803.

Freedom may have worked some magic on their end to deal with these types
of controls.
Also if the site in question is relying on other libraries or plugins to
function, an upgrade from the third party may have changed something
that causes them not to read. It is hard to know.

I tried the site with Firefox and it didn't read the fiels correctly with NVDA. It does with JAWS. It is now, in my opinion a question for NVDA developers to look at. is this an NVDA problem or a site problem? Does this affect enough sites to be worked on or is the number so very small that the correction, if there is one, isn't justified?

Also, this form illustrates the reason people should be taught to down arrow rather than tab through forms in general. Consider the following quote from the form we are discussing:
Password (must be at least 6 characters and contain at least 1 number):

JAWS sees the word "password" but the explanatory text about what the password must contain is not read when tabbing. That is important information and a lot of people won't sign up successfully without seeing it. They won't include a number or it will be too short.

There are a lot of sites that have information that may be important between fields that is not read when tabbing. Again, another example of poor Internet instruction. There are forms where I know, as an experienced user, that I don't have to worry about missing possible information between the fields. But what about all the inexperienced users? What about people who fill out a form, don't know the importance of down arrowing instead of tabbing through a form, and don't understand why the form is not being accepted? Had they down arrowed and seen information about the syntax to use in a field, they'd know.

Experienced users may want to tab through unfamiliar forms but they may have problems as a result. the best way to deal with a form is to down arrow through it and certainly, inexperienced users should do so as a matter of routine. And, of course, anyone should try down arrowing through a form if information isn't read that is necessary while tabbing.

What happen with nvda b when the message pops up, Unfortunately some
programs tend to put text in as a graphic, so then you have a problem.
I assume you used screen navigation to get out of the yes no buttons and
see if there is any text there?

Gene is correct, although I should emphasize that 2018.3 (at least in beta form) will bring more than improved support for Windows 10. Some of the other features include automatic braille display detection, announcing grammar errors in Chrome if exposed by web authors, support for BrailleNote QT (my work), improved list of languages in NVDA’s general settings panel, and a whole bunch of changes for developers.

Do you have service pack 1 installed on the Windows machine?  that is necessary.  As far as I know, NVDA still supports machines withService Pack 1.

 

How important is it for you to run a current version.  While I don't follow what's new in NVDA closely since I have no need of what has been changed, my impression is that for awhile, most changes are to keep the program current and improve accessibility in Windows 10.  Therefore, you might do well running the last version that doesn't require service pack 1 if you can't or don't want to upgrade the machine.

Well, since you can't currently run NVDA on the machine, you'll need a sighted
helper to look for you. They need to start from Control Panel and then click
on "System and Security" and then "System".

Under the heading "Windows edition", it'll say which version of Windows 7 is
installed (eg: Home Premium), and underneath that it will say "Service Pack 1"
if it is installed.

Hi,

Gene is correct, although I should emphasize that 2018.3 (at least in beta form) will bring more than improved support for Windows 10. Some of the other features include automatic braille display detection, announcing grammar errors in Chrome if exposed by web authors, support for BrailleNote QT (my work), improved list of languages in NVDA’s general settings panel, and a whole bunch of changes for developers.

Do you have service pack 1 installed on the Windows machine?  that is necessary.  As far as I know, NVDA still supports machines withService Pack 1.

 

How important is it for you to run a current version.  While I don't follow what's new in NVDA closely since I have no need of what has been changed, my impression is that for awhile, most changes are to keep the program current and improve accessibility in Windows 10.  Therefore, you might do well running the last version that doesn't require service pack 1 if you can't or don't want to upgrade the machine.

Well, since you can't currently run NVDA on the machine, you'll need a sighted
helper to look for you. They need to start from Control Panel and then click
on "System and Security" and then "System".

Under the heading "Windows edition", it'll say which version of Windows 7 is
installed (eg: Home Premium), and underneath that it will say "Service Pack 1"
if it is installed.
